Went on a little trip this past weekend to celebrate my birthday and I found a record shop. I don’t have any near me at home so I took this opportunity to pick up my first vinyl records. I’ve always been a CD guy but my partner recently got a record player so it was only a matter of time before the dam finally broke and I picked some up too.
Albums are, starting from the one on top and working under it one by one:
- Death Stranding: Songs From the Video Game
- Blackwater Park - Opeth
- The Fragile - Nine Inch Nails
I gotta listen to Boards of Canada’s latest album already! Might have to give all their albums another listen-through first, it’s been a while.
I love the early CD console era, where you could just throw a queer house gem into your obscure puzzle game and no one would bat an eye.
Listening to the new Brutalismus 3000 that recently dropped and the collaboration with Underworld is making this old folk happy.
Been playing The Endless Empty and the soundtrack is so FUNKY. Kind of runs the gamut of genres. Lots of shoegaze-type stuff too which makes me nostalgic for college. Love how scuzzy and offbeat this game is.
I’ve recently found A Tergo Lupi, an Italian band that does folk-norsey and this track from their latest album doesn’t let go. I feel compelled to listen to it multiple times every time I play the album. It’s haunting.
Some Grouvee Game Club crossover: I CAN’T STOP LISTENING TO THIS. It’s SO cute. It sounds more like the soundtrack to the fluffiest romance visual novel ever made and instead it’s for FromSoft’s Monster Card Party Quest. I love it.
I don’t know how I feel about this new Strokes album, but I keep listening to it which must say something.
I remember listening to David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and loving it. I told a friend I wished Bowie’s new stuff* sounded like Ziggy Stardust. “Bro, he’ll never make a record like that again.” And once I came to accept that, I came to love a lot of his later work.
I kinda wish every Strokes album sounded like Is This It. But they just aren’t those guys anymore. Their youthful energy has disappeared and the punk edge is dulled. That being said, so has my youth and my edge. I still really enjoy their song composition and hearing them come back together. They just have a sound that feels their own. Like you could blindfold me and play me any Julian Casablancas joint and I could tell you if that’s the Strokes or a Julian original/feature. Same with Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr. They have side projects of various qualities, but nothing quite like when they come together.
To my dismay, the last three Strokes albums don’t sound like the first three Strokes albums. Their new album, Reality Awaits, also doesn’t sound like the first three Strokes albums. But for the first time, I think I’m able to appreciate it.
Some of the lyrics though woof
