Occasionally a pop song comes along that just becomes a nonstop earworm for me. Espresso is doing that for me lately. It’s so catchy!!
But the other thing I’ve been listening to is my favorite death metal band’s new chill electronic space jazz album they released as a bit of a suprise last month.
I’ve been revisiting Tears for Fears. Songs From the Big Chair was such a killer album.
As someone who started with and still really loves The New Abnormal, Reality Awaits just doesn’t do it for me I think. The instrumentals are decent but the vocals don’t hit quite right and the songs fail to grab me. This Is It and Room On Fire are both solid in my book though.
So it’s interesting to me that you feel you can appreciate this new album for sounding different where you couldn’t with the previous two. I think for me it’s just the weakest of their albums I’ve listened to, but I also haven’t been following them for nearly as long as you.

The new Phoebe Bridgers is like watching Monet paint Ravine of Petit Creuse only to then see him paint the same haystacks over and over again. There’s just something about them haystacks.
Colorgrave makes games that I don’t really like, but their noodle-y guitar soundtracks are always fun:
I’ve listened to this whole thing 3 times through and have so many of the Beatul renditions of classic OOT songs stuck in my head.

I have a spot in my heart for Brandon Flowers. I don’t shout his name from the rooftops as the last few Killers albums have felt unnecessary. That being said- Flamingo, Hot Fuss, Sam’s Town, Day & Age, and The Desired Effect all blast my brain with nostalgic feelings of youth and young adulthood. And the solo-career-exclusive Springsteen-esque stylings just go for something akin to a Sean Baker film- Beautiful, personal ballads about Nevada street corners. His new album, Thrasher, re-envisions him as a folk country superstar. He’s less Springsteen and more Elvis. I find it mostly works! There is a hacky song where he describes interracial sex as “chocolate and vanilla mix”. So, uh, I don’t love all of his folksy turns of phrase, but he seems curious and not judgmental so I dont begrudge him too much for the cringe way he occasionally spins a yarn. Tiger’s Blood, Does It Ever Cross Your Mind, Paradise, and An American Dream are now in the pantheon of all time Flowers’ croonings.

This was originally written for harpsichord (if you can imagine that). Well, I guess you don’t have to imagine it, you can just look it up on YouTube! But I like this version, it feels like an Uematsu last boss theme at its core. This version is for barrel organ, and if I understand these adaptations, it’s like a player piano, but, you know, an organ. So it’s recordings of these very weird and difficult pieces with technical perfection.
