But it made you think on it, and thats all i was trying to do lol.
My latest Substack article is something of a love letter to Myst, spercificlly the city of Dāni you get to explore on Uru. Pretty proud of this one, if anyone is interested in checking it out.
Congratulations! I havenāt had time to read it yet. Needs to wait for the weekend like the Grouvee podcast too! That they gave you a shoutout is amazing!
Awesome! Reading through it yesterday strongly swayed me toward trying out some of the games. I always found the name Myst familiar, but never really looked into it. I expect in the next month or two that will now change.
They are all on GoG for pretty affordable prices.
Read it today! Made me realize that I did not know about the multiplayer aspect of this. I very much enjoyed walking thriough the city with you and in my memories.
Funnily enough in my head there was Myst/Uru music playing. Seems these pictures are more strongly attached to the music for me than I had realized.
Now I want to buy the Riven Remake ā¦ I should not ā¦ need to save moneyā¦ aaaah!
Hope you liked it.
The music in all the Myst games is top notch. Itās so hauntingly beautiful. Iām very keen to play the Riven Remake myself as Riven is my favourite of the whole series, but unfortunately I donāt have anything that can run it.
Back to the music of Myst for a moment, I think my favourite piece from the whole series is the theme of the Kadish Gallery from Uru. So beautiful
So I may have come up with a new project for myself.
Although I plan on getting a Steam Deck, in the meantime I wonder if I could turn my old laptop into a makeshift Steam Machine? I read this article which, while admittedly is seven years old, suggests itās doable.
While the screen hasnāt broken yet, the hinge is slowly getting worse so maybe Iāll have to eventually remove it as the article suggests. I figured that now SteamOS is a think I could remove Win11 and have it boot to that (I could leave things as they are and just open steam with the touch pad, but it would be cool to do everything with a controller via Big Picture.)
Even if I no longer used it once the Steam Deck arrived due to that deviceās docking ability, it could be cool to use as a storage backup or as a media center for the guest room.
What do you guys think? Has anyone tried anything like this before?
You should check to see if your laptop meets the minimum requirements to run Bazzite which is a custom fork of Fedora that is built to basically be a clone of SteamOS but with some greater functionality. You can read up on a comparison between the two here:
Oof, I totally forgot to mention and I should have because this is pretty relevant: Valve discontinued their original SteamOS distro, which was based on Debian, and switched to Arch Linux. The problem with this is twofold: 1) the Arch Linux version of SteamOS is specifically configured for SteamDeck, and wonāt work on other machines. You can download this version of Steam OS, but configuring it for a device other than the Steam Deck is going to be a pain. I believe the plan is they will eventually release a version of SteamOS that will have broader device support, but they havenāt yet. 2) The old version of SteamOS is no longer supported so you wonāt see any updates or patches to keep the platform secure and functional as time goes by.
The good news is that you donāt need SteamOS to get a SteamOS experience. Thatās why Bazzite exists, but if Bazzite isnāt the solution for you, you can also try installing Arch Linux on your machine with the KDE interface, and then install Steam and enable Proton. Youāll be able to fudge the SteamOS experience pretty well, minus console mode but you can just use Steam Big Picture for that general experience.
You can also check out ChimeraOS for another SteamOS alternative like Bazzite. ChimeraOS is based on Arch, so is a bit closer to an unofficial SteamOS-like, and is very specifically gaming focused. Bazzite is for people who want a slightly more rounded OS in case they want to game and use other software. If you just want to game and want a SteamOS-like experience, maybe try ChimeraOS. You an still do other things on it, just like you can on a SteamDeck, itās probably just configured to preference performance over multitasking, ectā¦
What are the specs of your laptop? I might try loading Chimera up on one of my devices to see how comparable it is to SteamOS. If I can find a device that has a similar chipset as your laptop I could even tell you how successfully Bazzite or ChimeraOS runs. I know Bazzite can be finicky about older integrated graphics.
Honestly, it all sounds like a lot of work. Maybe Iāll just keep Win11 and have Steam launch into Big Picture mode.
Just had a short story accepted for the December issue ofShlock webzine.
