Movies and TV, Anyone?

Watched a different movie from another well known Japanese anime director: Masaaki Yuasa’s The Night is Short, Walk On Girl.

I really, really needed this after today.

Phenomenal movie. Be sure to also eventually watch Tatami Galaxy, which is a prior series by Yuaasa that is also based on another book by Tomihiko Morimi.

Is it just me, or do shows seem to feel the need to repeat plot points every 10 minutes. They must think the audience is thick as two planks.

You’re not alone; this is something people have been noting for a while. The idea seems to be that lots of people will have Netflix (or what have you) on while they do other stuff, and characters explaining what’s going on in the story for each scene has been deemed the solution by some shows. If half your audience is playing Candy Crush or scrolling Tik Toks on their phones while they “watch” your show, then perhaps that does seem to be what you’ve gotta do!

That makes sense, but it’s having the opposite effect in that it’s really putting me off

We finished Castlevania: Nocturne. I definitely didn’t like it as much as the first series. It started slow, picked up a little momentum, and then the last few episodes felt like watching a big bad fight in Dragon Ball Z. Generally underwhelming.

I wonder what it would have been like if they incorporated less of Symphony of the Night plot points into the first series, and brought Dracula back and incorporated more SotN into Nocturne. Because just throwing them in a pot and slapping together Rondo of Blood, Symphony of the Night, and Bloodlines (for some reason), AND Juste from Harmony of Dissonance, felt odd.

I liked Annette and think her re-imagining had a lot of potential, but was underdeveloped. Maria was meh. I did chuckle at the nod to her Rondo of Blood little kid pink dress.

The voice acting in this season was abysmal. Olrox and Tera in particular, but also Erzsebet and others to a lesser degree. This might be controversial, but I also think they could have cast Edouard better. No shade to Sydney James Harcourt, but they should have hired someone who actually sings Baroque opera.

Adored the new Chainsaw Man movie. The Reze arc was my favorite arc from the manga and this movie was such a beautiful adaptation. Reze’s JP VA was absolutely adorable in this and I fell in love with the romance even more here. Almost gave it full marks, but I like Look Back more. I‘m willing to watch it again.

I’m finding too many DVDs for cheap. Last night, watched GREMLINS for the first time

Those were some hedonistic little beasts ! Yikes !

I had a vague memory of the bad ones making the good one go through a heating grate; must’ve been Gremlins 2 if anything

We watched K-Pop Demon Hunters over the weekend. As a movie, it’s mid, don’t @ me.
But, I think it would make a great Jem or magical-girl-monster-of-the-day sort of show, where they can dig deeper into… well, everything.

If we’re doing controversial takes, may I offer up the following;

Captain America: Brave New World was fun and Joker (yes, the first one) was self indulgent toss.

Some quick thoughts on some of the stuff I’ve been watching recently.

Great British Bake Off - I loved the new season! I think Alison and Noel are the best host pairings and the contestants were memorable. Now that it is over, what will comfort me?

Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein - Not what I was expecting, but the more I reflect on it the more I like it. I was expecting gothic horror, but it is more of a drama about parenting styles. Excellent sets, costumes, make up, etc.

After the Hunt - I am not much of a fan of Julia Roberts as a performer, but I will not be surprised when her performance starts winning best of the year awards. The whole principle cast is wonderful, but Roberts in particular gets to give a nuanced and special performance. It isn’t Challengers good, but I will definitely be watching it again.

Pluribus - The premise is so fascinating and handled so fully that the show doesn’t need much else to be a necessary viewing. However, Rhea Seehorn is giving another defining performance. The Emmys better not fuck this up again!

Fionna and Cake season 2 - I am having fun, but I am hoping the plot picks up. I actually just recently watched season 1 again with my kids and the old season had similar pacing. That being said, the first season released two episodes at a time and the wait for the time for adventure was minimal. The gender swapped Huntress Wizard is seemingly trans! Cool!

For the first time, I have watched Back to the Future in IMAX. Really great movie with so many satisfying setups and payoffs. That Earth Angel cover is going on the regular. One of the most fulfilling movies I have seen all year.

Me and my friend were talking about horror movies after I told her I watched Sinners in IMAX when it was reissued. I remember her eyes averting away from grotesque body visuals so I brought up John Carpenter’s The Thing when she said she was into all kinds of horror. Did a little deal that If I watched it, she will watch it too. Already did my end of the bargain and it was incredible. Wonder when my friend will do hers.

Yesterday, when I got home from work, my dad started watching Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein. Really nice compliment piece and extension to del Toro’s Pinnochio.

I’m doing a little project on a movie. If you saw one of my posts on here, you’d maybe get what I’m doing. It’s gonna be really fun when I reveal it to my circles. The funny blue guy from 2010 will get the gaslight edit treatment.

Secret Lives of Mormon Wives is the only show where people throw elevated St. Patrick themed birthday parties and that’s why I like it.
