Halloween Gaming Challenge 2023! 🎃

No worries. The formatting can be rough, even when posting it correctly. I usually keep track in an Excel or Google Sheet.

Challenge #1 - Bat [COMPLETE] :bat:
Super Mario Party (Nintendo Switch, 2018)

Somehow I just beat this game with a friend over the weekend, which is pretty embarrassing considering I preordered the game when it released back in 2018, but over the last couple of months we unlocked all the boards, game modes, characters, and viewed the final cutscene. The only thing left to do is buy all the Party Pad shop items or use special amiibo figures to unlock certain stickers.

The minigame Fireplace Race featured bats that would whisk you away and prevent you from lighting candles if you made the mistake of running into them (which I did frequently).

GROUVEE HALLOWEEN CHALLENGE #13: ZOMBIE

Scott Pilgrim vs. the World

– Also would’ve worked for Bat or Pumpkin
– Still waiting for a part for #3 [Ghost]

Working my way through Kuon. There are definitely vengeful ghosts, and there are gaki… Gaki are zombie-looking goblin-ish creatures, but the internet tells me they are a type of spirit (something akin to the various “hungry ghosts” found in East Asian folklore and Buddhism). I suppose I can at least cross off “ghost” for this one, and probably “monster.” Plenty of people have been killed too, and chances are I will eventually find someone behind all this and can properly land me a “killer.”

I’ll have to notice if there’s a graveyard of some kind.

I’m gonna be putting images to my X’s this year from now on, maybe i’ll go recover some images for the other games  clickable images are fun I think to see the creatures we’re facing in our games!

I’ve been a bit busy with work, military obligations and finishing up Cozy Grove (1 more bear left and I’m thinking one more interaction with them to finish up all of the non DLC bear storylines), but I plan on starting up Luigi’s Mansion as one of my games for the challenge. I finished up my friendly neighborhood recently but I’m thinking the only thing I can put down for it is Rats, but it’s all good.

After that, I might delve into Kuon like Reset_Tears just did/ is doing as it’s been on my bucket list.

I guess we will see where the cold winds blow me for this challenge. Quality over quantity will indeed be my motto for this year.

I was disappointed during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct that the first Luigi’s Mansion wasn’t announced for Switch. I never got to play it and have been hoping for all of them to get ported to modern consoles so I could play through the series. At least that’s possible with Pikmin now.

Still working on Kuon, and overall still enjoying it. It’s definitely not going to win an award for combat, there isn’t much enemy variety, the puzzles are nothing special, and it’s a shame the characters don’t move their mouths when they talk. But the atmosphere is just fantastic. What an absolutely dreadful manor you’re exploring, every room filled with blood, grime, silkworm threads, talismans, and corpses – all lit by the feeble glow of tiny candles on the murkiest of midnights.

Finally finishing Castlevania 2 for the first time inspired me to do the same for Castlevania 3 ! After all these years

Not counting it for anything, but it seems like 'tis the season

I have been chugging away at Final Fantasy II so hoping I can finish it in time for this challenge. It’s going to count for quite a few things. I still have a long ways to go but I’ve been getting sucked into it for 5+ hour gaming sessions, which is pretty rare for me nowadays. I initially got stuck cause I wasn’t sure how to gear up my party since they give you complete freedom (ick). I need more instruction in my games, haha.

The best advice I can give you is cheese everything and anything you can. The game is already stacked against you. If you try to play this like a typical RPG or Final Fantasy game, you’re going to have a bad time.

For instance, attack your party members with weak weapons to up their HP. Use a map when entering any dungeon too, as they are intentionally made to confuse you and waste your time.

Even with all of that, I can’t help but appreciate they tried something different and it remains one of my favorites (not sure what that says about me though. lol).

I’ve been using a guide throughout my entire playthrough. I prefer using one when I can as I find it much easier to focus. Also I try to complete everything on the first playthrough as I rarely replay games.

So far the difficulty has been fine. I got my first game over in the Coliseum when a random encounter of six baddies kept casting full-party magic spells over and over and over. Two party members got toaded (one of them being my WHM), three of them got paralyzed, and after that, it was just delaying the inevitable.

If you really want easy mode, and it might be too late for this, but get Masamunes for everyone in the snowmobile game. If you’re worried about damage, grab some Genji gear too. If you’re playing the dawn of souls version, equip them and don’t remove them from Minwu, Josef, or Ricard.

The hardest part was getting from the Coliseum to Altair with most of my party toaded. I reset a few times trying different things to cure myself of it but then remembered I could flee from every encounter until I got to town. Never going anywhere without a healthy stock of Maiden’s Kiss again.

Do you know Basuna? (Or maybe Esuna?) If I remember right, it might not work until you get some levels on it.

GROUVEE HALLOWEEN CHALLENGE # 3: GHOST/HAUNTING

Yoshi

– I was hoping to do a new one for this one, but I had to order a part for it which got cancelled and delayed. Maybe later

– I believe that’s all of them ! But, some of the bonus ones sound intriguing. And it’s not even October yet

The spell wasn’t leveled up enough to cure my Toad status and even if it was, my White Mage got toaded. :sob:

And all done with Kuon. Perhaps not a great game (bad combat, tons of backtracking, meh puzzles, ability to heal kinda kills most of the challenge), but if you’re a fan of J-horror at all you’ll feel right at home in this haunted Japanese mansion, which has some delightfully twisted rituals in progress. Glad to finally cross this one off my bucket list; I think it was well worth the playthrough.

Next up on my PS2 horror spook-a-thon is Cold Fear – but I might take a little break to play something lighter but still monster-themed from the NES. (I have a few titles there I’ve been meaning to get to…)

Started playing the NES release of Monster in My Pocket – aka the OG Pocket Monsters lol. And this will likely cross off most of the list categories, hue hue.

All done with Monster in My Pocket – a very simple beat-em-up that lets you play through six stages as either Dracula or Frankenstein’s Monster. You’re the size of a small toy though, so the levels reminded me a lot of the NES games for Disney’s Rescue Rangers.

I’m stunned this didn’t have bats! So many flying monsters, but no bats. Also surprised by the lack of jack-o-lanterns and werewolves… A lot of the enemies were creatures from Greek myths and whatnot, so the game was really only about half Halloween-themed.

I don’t know if I’m ever going to find a scarecrow. Are we sure that shouldn’t be something like skeleton? =P (I know I can just look up games for their enemy types online, but I’m trying to be organic about this lol.)
