Edit: several games were missing from the .csv export I used to make the list above. I just manually added a dozen or so more games.
Here’s what I played in 2017, more or less in order. It’s worth noting that being a new’ish dad, has a massive massive impact on time available, and “me” time just gets shunted right to the bottom of the pecking order! So I have to be very selective what I commit to…
Bloodborne / Bloodborne: The Old Hunters (started 2016)
Can’t even remember if I even played it this year, but it says on Grouvee I added it on Jan, 4 so I’ll assume I beat it in 2017. Easily one of my favorite games, 10/10 would sob again.
My friends really burned me when they saw me spend $30 CAN for a game I described to them as a “5-hour-long scuba game”. They aren’t the type to enjoy games like Abzu, or at least are the type that wouldn’t be interested to play Abzu. First saw this game while watching ThatOneVideoGamer do a spotlight for it on youtube. Saw the underwater setting and art style and I knew I would buy it.
The Overwatch craze that started in late 2016 has not dissipated that much since and it has got to me. I was and am SICK of hearing it. “OVERWATCH GOTY 2016, NO GOAT WOOOOO”. It got on my nerves as a guy who loses interest in online only shooters very quickly, not to mention it was a nearly fully priced game on PS4 and I was not going to cave in to the hype and buy a game I wasn’t interested in. As soon as I heard a “rip-off” Overwatch was coming to PS4 for free, I was ready to slash it to pieces and call it out for being stupid hyped. To my surprise, I liked the game a lot and played it often with my friends, and to my second surprise, it wasn’t like Overwatch that much. Overwatch is much cleaner with more refined mechanics and larger maps, just an overall more polished game. I never touched Overwatch and never plan to. I stopped Paladins and probably won’t come back for a while. Gald I didn’t spend money.
I haven’t beat this one yet but spent enough time on it to say confidently that it is another one of my faves. My intro to souls and boy did it get me hooked. It is super hard, but nowhere near soul-crushing like people claimed. Looking forward to the Dark Souls trilogy.
The game that confirmed my suspicions that Metacritic user ratings are garbage and that Grouvee is king. (seriously 6.3/10 for Undertale?! LOL). Moving, beautiful, and saddeningly short. Needs HD remake imo, as I feel better textures would really add to its already stunning visuals.
Better than flower in that I believe it does not need a remake. Gaming at its perfection and again just wished it was longer. Multiplayer makes the difference between this and Abzu. Don’t use Skype, ruins the point.
My game of the year? More like the game of my life! I honestly think this penetrates my Top 10 games ever. I am OBSESSED, I bought the card game from Amazon, I am going to buy the DLC, I want to get all of the trophies, I want to read all of the lore and theories. The best part is I haven’t even beat it yet. To be fair I could speed through it but I am adamant about taking my time and going through the game thoroughly, I just love it that much.
Grouvee’s favorite Zelda has made my top 10 Zelda games, but not top 10 games overall. I loved it and it gets the “most times I died” award for Zelda games, but I think it is a bit overhyped. Not The Last of Us overhyped, I just expected a bit too much from such an old game. It is a great place to start Zelda for newcomers.
A gem I wouldn’t have heard about unless my friend told me about it. I saw the Metroidvania gameplay and amazing art direction, that I knew I had to check it out. I bought the definitive edition and beat it 100 %, but not all of the achievements. A new fave for me.
My first game ever was Donkey Kong Country for GBA. I never beat it and eventually gave it away. I would slap elementary school me for doing so if I had a time machine. Picked up the original cart from a con and beat it in a few days. I can finally die happy.
This game has confirmed my worst fear: I am growing tired of Pokemon. Not because I think it is repetitive or that I am growing out of it, it is just they come out way too close together. I just can’t keep up. I can never sit down and take in a Pokemon game anymore. I kind of felt this with X and Y, but I had way more time to sink into Kalos than I did in Alola. I found myself speeding through the game, worried I wouldn’t beat the Elite Four in time to have the metagame unlocked so I can enter competitive VGA leagues. I need Nintendo to stop and at least wait until Late December 2018 for Pokemon Switch so that I can be properly satisfied with Sun and Moon.
A quick iOS game for cheap to keep me from blowing my brains out at the university. Great show, okay game.
Another bus-ride-time-killer that I emulated on my phone. Had the physical cart as a kid and the game was BRUTAL. I think I either lost it or gave it away. I can now say I proudly beat it and that it is an embarrassingly simple and easy game. Would recommend to DBZ fans.
Games I started in 2017:
Technically my brother’s game, I wanted to try it out and ended up playing more than he did. Unfortunately, I stopped but really wanted to move on to other games first. Looking forward to picking it up again.
My game, but my brother beat it before me and ended up becoming his most favorite game of all time, beating out Uncharted, Pokemon and Undertale. I just started it and I am liking it so far, but I am way too early in to really say for sure.
Started it up once and played for a few minutes. Surprisingly didn’t go all out on it considering it was my most anticipated title of its year. Top of the priority list.
Played it for a bit and put it down. Just wanted to get a feel for it. Most likely to not continue though as it is not a game that I am that interested in.
Beat the first stage and liked what I saw. A Greek mythological DmC. Let my friend borrow it and I probably won’t ask for it back for a long time though.
Liked it a lot. Great writing and just the kind of quirky, strange kind of games I like. It’s just I lost the will to really finish all of the storylines. Don’t really know if I started it this year though.
Think I started it this year. Need to get back to it.
Fun so far but not as grand as other titles in the series. Feels like an amalgamation of other titles than its own entity, really. Working on it.
The first Mega Man game I played. Too hard for grade school me so away it went. Tried emulating it before but I think I lost my save or gave up a second time. Now I am fired up to finish it once and for all.
Love it. GOTY. Can’t stop and won’t stop. Died 700 times and counting. Never played a campaign game with my brother this long before. Hope we beat it.
My brother saw PewDiePie play it and asked me to get it. Playing it, I found it addicting, really fun, but entirely bullshit. A game I can only describe as QWOP meets The Stanley Parable.
These are all the games I started in 2017. I haven’t finished them all. Some I will never finish because I hate them. Most I have finished. Alphabetical order because it’s easier than chronological when I didn’t make a note of when I played it and I have a terrible memory. Ones marked (X) are abandoned never to be finished, and ones marked (U) are still in progress and so unfinished, but I intend to finish them. Animal Crossing has no marking because it never ends.

And here’s a special list. Can you believe that as a 37 year old man who lived through the 80s and 90s had never played a single Zelda game before 2017? I’m older than Tingle! So this year I made up for it. In roughly chronological order:
Here’s what I played (many of these were just 20 min tests but I had fun with all of them). No particular order:

I’m sure he used the shelf widget feature we have on Grouvee.
You could go to any shelf, click the Widget for this Shelf link, and copy the code into a text file, name it something.html, then open it in a browser. You’ll get a tile of boxart like this.
Yes, i made it from the widget. (which is really awesome, everyone should start playing with it more, i never really looked at it until recently) but it would seem the forums dont let you embed html into posts. or at least i couldnt figure out how… so made a screenshot of the widget.
it would be cool if there were a way to post the widget on here, as it would be a close analog to something akin to ‘year in review’.
the way i did it was i sorted my played shelf by “Date Finished” then after checking it was all nice and tidy clicked "enable sortin"g and "make this my manual sort. " Then click the widget. I then look at the first game I finish in 2017 and open the code in text pad/html (like peter mention) and chop off what goes past that. IF you don’t ‘finish’ games you might have better luck doing ‘added’ but i havent tested it, you might have to proof it a bit if you do it that way.
I generally finish games. One problem I noticed is that some of my Steam games randomly showed up on my completed shelf in 2017, part of that Steam import issue that happened earlier in the year. I need to exclude them manually somehow.
Here are the games I finished this year. I skipped a bunch of the big AAA 2017 releases but it was still a great year for games.
