I’ve found this Siberian folk band Otyken. It’s fantastic. Lovely combination of traditional instruments, throat singing and EDM.

This meaning of this song and album has been up for debate for almost thirty years now, but it breaks my heart.

“and in my dreams, you’re alive and you’re crying
as your mouth moves in mine, soft and sweet
rings of flowers 'round your eyes and I’ll love you
for the rest of your life when you’re ready”

Where do people like to discover new music? I’ve mostly been relying on Spotify’s Discover Weekly playlist, and youtube suggested videos based on whatever new songs I’m currently into at the moment.

Having a lot of new music in rotation right now including this bop:

I haven’t thought about this song in years but it popped into my head recently. It’s a complicated, kind of odd, song about a tragic shooting. Still makes me cry though.

saw this king in concert last night.

I had an adventure seeing him with my neighbor Trev.

I went to Ravinia twice last year. Once to see the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and once to see TLC & Shaggy. Both times parking/transportation was annoying but not impossible. Weird Al, however, was as oversold as it gets. Before I even get off the highway, the traffic started. I had given myself what I thought was plenty of time so I wasn’t concerned. Plus, Puddles’ Pity Party was performing the opener so even if I missed the proper start of the concert, I wouldnt miss Al. AND google is giving me a shortcut (driving through neighborhoods where there are signs that say “Please don’t drive through this neighborhood”). We get to Ravinia (an outdoor concert field with a covered pavilion I splurged on) but google sent us to priority parking where we can’t actually park, and we get sent to another parking area. I follow the person in front of me who was also directed to this second lot, but after a couple minutes I can tell this guy was lost. Now the official show is set to start in 30 minutes and we still don’t know where to park. We find the other parking lot online but as we drive there, we see Ravinia employees redirecting folks to a shuttle area as that parking lot is also full. After a lot of traffic, we get to the shuttle parking lot. There are several hundred people in front of us waiting to get on some of the smallest shuttle buses I’ve ever seen maybe only fitting 20-30 people a shuttle. I check how far we are from the venue now- 2.7 miles and it is now 10 minutes after the official start of the concert. I have no confidence that the shuttle will get us there on time for Al and I ask my 50 year old neighbor Trev if he is willing to walk. He says lets do it and we start walking. I hold onto the knowledge that when I saw TLC and Shaggy, TLC performed about an hour and Shaggy came out after 30 more minutes. Hoping that we’d just miss Puddles (no offense to this man, I just didnt grow up loving his lounge ballads), we walk for 30 minutes before it starts pouring rain. Soaking wet, we keep going. Finally, we see Ravinia, and I can hear the UHF theme playing off in the distance. We had made it and that is an opening song if I’ve ever heard one. As we walk up, I see the Ravinia screens showing Weird Al also approaching the stage while performing Tacky. We had made it right as Al was getting on stage.

I wanted to attend this concert because I’ve never seen Al before, and he is 65 years old. Maybe he wouldn’t tour much longer was my concern. Maybe this was my last chance. I no longer feel this way as I watched Weird Al perform with a youthful exuberance through decades of hits while making several costume changes. He was Kurt Cobain. He was a Jedi. He was Michael Jackson. He was fat Michael Jackson. He was amish! Age hasn’t slowed Weird Al down. Decades of experience has refined his performance into something bombastic, hilarious, and I’d even say impactful.

By the way, the rain kept coming down. My neighbor was getting the severe thunderstorm warnings on his phone. We would see Al come back on stage from a wardrobe change and his face would be covered in rain, but the dude kept performing. I was very happy I paid extra for those covered pavilion seats because if we were stuck in the field as the thunder cracked, I probably would have shuttled back to my car and missed the amazing performance.

Weird Al was fantastic and while I no longer think he is going to stop touring any time soon, I do recommend seeing him when you can as the man puts on one of the best concerts I’ve seen. Also big shout out to his backing band. Those people can perform anything.

Sometimes you fall down the rabbit hole of ig reel songs and find one that’s actually good in real life.

I recently rediscovered Powerderfinger, the biggest band in Australia from the 90’s to early 2000s. I don’t know what kind of impact they had internationally, but this probably their most well known song. Great video, too.
