Josh Tillman also came along with a spectacular career defining Father John Misty record last week (On the same day as Kendrick’s new record no less). It features a really impressive array of 70s-inspired sounds from chamber pop to garage rock, wall of sound, psychedelia and disco. Really feels like a culmination of everything he’s done up to this point.
father john misty/k dot beef starts now.
I finally got around to listening to the new Kendrick and yeah, it’s some really good shit. I don’t think there’s a miss anywhere in the tracklist and there’s something refreshing about how up front and raw the sound is on this release. I do kind of miss the sort of ethereal/spiritual vibe from his other albums but if I want that I can always go listen to those. I’m still partial to good kid, m.A.A.d city but I think GNX will be a lot easier to throw on and enjoy when I just want something fun.
This is fantastic. Im obsessed with it. Its like 10 min long, its almost like a play instead of just a song. He raps two characters having a discussion about his career and his doubts and how its affected him.
kendrick is definitely up there as an artist for me as everytime he drops an album, i question if it is somehow his best work yet. gnx is no exception. so many tracks sing on their own, but the sequencing is exquisite and the album just flies by. the two tracks with sza are so smooth, i love them. put gnx on. its up there as one of my favorites of the year.
MUSSSTAARRRRDDD!!
Post Malone Must be Atleast 20 Characters
Legitimate question, Does he ever mention why the album is called GnX? The car he’s leaning against is an 87 Buick GnX so I kinda assumed maybe its like a favorite car or something. It was known as a bit of a sleeper due to its sedate looks, but could clear a quarter mile faster than nearly everything else at the time, being in the middle of a gas crisis in the 80s. It was a really interesting car, and probably one of the best of the year, if not the 80s overall. they were 29k new which seems insane, but now run at least 100k or more and basically never lost value.
Edit: Maybe…and this is just a guess its a reference to his personality and how hes pretty quiet and not in the spotlight much, letting his music show his talent. Actions speak louder type of thing, which was kinda where the car shined as well.
i think your edit hit the nail on the head. the album is all about his love of the craft
I think I saw someone say that 1987 also happens to be the year Kendrick was born, so that also points to using the car as a sort of metaphor for himself.
I’ve been listening to The Bloodhound Gang a lot cause I never matured past the age of 12 psychologically.
I think this broke my brain. It goes to some truly weird places, but it’s brilliant. Just make sure to watch the whole thing.
Had one of the biggest whiplashes of my life yesterday—Olivia Tremor Control is one of my favorite bands of all time, and their two records along with Circulatory System’s first record were extremely important to the formation of my musical preferences.
Yesterday two new tracks were released on Bandcamp, the first new music under the OTC name 13 years! “The Same Place” is a well known demo that has floated around the internet, but “Garden of Light” is new to me and I was so happy to hear the late Bill Doss’s voice again.
But later on in the day, OTC’s co-founder Will Cullen Hart passed away. He dealt with MS for many years, which made it difficult to produce music, so it must have been a joy to see his art released into the world in his final hours. RIP to one of one of my biggest inspirations and one the greatest underground musical geniuses of my lifetime.
A wild ride that I enjoyed a lot, thanks for posting!
im watching the music box doc on yacht rock and all these artists (kenny loggins, michael mcdonald, steely dan) say they heard stevie wonder and it changed their life and yea i know that feeling.
questlove also calls michael mcdonald a funky muppet which i also agree with.
