Video Game Hot Takes

Spinning out of the “Portal is a 3D platformer” discussion, I thought it would be fun to share our other video game related hot takes.

Keep in mind this is just for fun, there is no right or wrong here.

Ok, I’ll go first; Cyberpunk 2077’s V is a vapid, self important egotist that makes getting the game’s good ending actually feel like a bad outcome (reasoning here).

FFVI was my least favorite of the golden age of Final Fantasies(FFIV-FFX, excluding FFV). I still think its a great game but I find it overrated and didn’t connect with the story as well as the other final fantasys.

FFXIII is far better than FFXV. People judged FFXIII for being a corridor that becomes open world towards the end, but FFXV had the exact same pattern but in reverse. I didn’t find FFXV’s open world to be engaging and found FFXIII to have the better combat system and presentation

Big agree on the second point. I was surprised how much I enjoyed XIII considering its reputation. I love the bromance going on in XV but there’s little else to really praise. It looks and sounds nice, I suppose. I did really enjoy VI though, hehe. I think IV is my least favorite of the entries IV-X, including V, but I still enjoyed it a good deal.

As for my hot take…

I think DmC is the best Devil May Cry game. I generally prefer the Dante of the other games but DmC was the most fun for me and also had my favorite story. In terms of gameplay it’s closely followed by DMC V though.

I actually agree lol, DmC is underrated and i enjoyed it as much if not more than dmc4 and 5. Still havent played the first or the third ones tho

I am glad multiple gaming clients exist, it is not an issue to me to have multiple of them installed, especially with Grouvee allowing to keep an oversight of your games. The only issue happens when you make the mistake to buy a game on one client that needs you to additionally load another client (Ubisoft game bought on Steam, needing a Playstation account on Steam…) because it adds another vector of failure.

A world where no clients exist may be the best of worlds ( a world with physical games only might even be better), but that train has left the station long ago (thanks Gabe😒), we need competiing gaming clients. After what happens right now on Steam with payment providers even more and with Microsoft going “Game Pass everywhere” too.

I hope all of you have itch.io installed and the GOG client, they are a must have!

Yes Tim Sweeney is an a- hole, but his gaming client is just a means to play games and most for free wich is like stealing from TIm, who doesn’t want to do that, right?

The only client I did boycott was Battle.net after the Free Hong Kong incident and that is a non-issue since they are Microsoft now.

I have no access to Game Pass, but because I don’t need it, not for political reasons. I just want to keep the games I like, so I am not into subscription models and I feel they are bad for gaming as a whole. I do own games on the Microsoft Store that I got for free and Minecraft after they were bought and I had to get an account there.

I also have a Legacy games launcher and Amazon games client. I try to abstain from Amazon as good as I can and unsubscribed from Prime, but once a year we might need to order from them and then I use a “free Prime” or a “99 Cent Prime” and get the games that are free at that time.

I hate it when people go “Steam or no buy”. Valve is not your friend and Steam having this huge monopoly is bad long term even if their client is nicer than all the others. Having all games and developers in one basket also means they are more easily put under pressure as we can see now.

I’m a big fan of FFXIII so I’m with you. I do still have a fondness for FFV because of its greater focus on character development, which is similar to the fact that much of FFXIII’s plot is in service of character development. But the paradigm system is my favourite FF battle system.

Which of the golden age games was your favourite?

I feel like a decent amount of people like DmC on Grouvee. I also quite liked it but I didn’t have an investment in Dante’s character so I wasn’t bothered by the change in characterization that some fans were, I think.

FFX is my fav, but i love them all. FF rebirth came close to dethroning it tho, really excited for part 3. The only one i havent played is ffv but i hear the job system is great.

I’ve had a look at itch.io but not seen anything on there that really interests me TBH. Now without a computer I don’t know if I can even use it, unless it runs on Steam Deck?

My hot take is that Bound is the best game Playstation has published in the past ten years, largely on the strength of its aesthetic and its stellar photo mode.

The Itch launcher runs on Steam Deck because it has a Linux build. Lots of games also have Linux builds. For those that don’t you can just add the game to Steam and run it through the proton layer. Itch is probably the easiest launcher to run after Steam itself.

God yes. But also because it’s an attempt to translate dance into interactive play, and I’m always here for that!

For sure, all the choreography is incredible! More games need to have a “dance” button.

I think Skyrim’s overrated. I recognize it was a milestone and it does some things I admire. I also think it was too overly ambitious to really be a good game. There’s too much content for any of it to really have an impact.

To be fair, I think this is a general gap between my game preferences and Bethesda’s general style. But comparing Skyrim to FO4, it feels like there was a more coherent storyline in FO4. I haven’t touched FO4 for years, but if someone asked me to describe it, I could. Skyrim? I couldn’t even begin to tell you what that game is about. There’s so much in that game that the story is lost in the noise.

Yes, in my opinion, it’s the worst of the three Elder Scrolls games I’ve played. Morrowind and Oblivion had so much more interesting storylines and gameplay. The only thing I would disagree with you on is that FO4 to me continues a downward trend toward blandness for Bethesda that culminated in Starfield. I’m not really excited for FO5 or TES6. Hopefully, they’ll prove me wrong.

I’ve not played Skyrim, but I got bored with Oblivion.

Speaking of Nintendo franchises, I’ll raise you a “Legend of Zelda games are boring.”

From the ones I’ve played, I largely agree
