This is going to be the main discussion thread for the new Super Grouveecast. Weekly questions, suggestions and anything else related to the new podcast can be posted here. Eventually if we end up with enough traffic we will do individual threads for each episode but for now this is the home.
Thanks from all of us working on the podcast to all of you for listening, discussing and enjoying our show!!
I will have to wait for the weekend, probably Saturday to get to it, but I am excited for it. Don’t want to put it on while doing other stuff - I need to get every word and all the fun!
I had looked it up some time ago and this explains it very well. Just skip the in video add that is very long. It is not a new thing and I promise the video gets funnier and funnier by the minute - stay to the end!
So i looked it up, and watch part of the vid. Its weird. Why would anyone talk like that on purpose. I mean i get if you juat sound like that normally cause everyone sounds different but it seems like… like youre faking or acting to get more interest.
All manner of speech is performative. Part of our speech habits are learned from our social groups and it’s not uncommon for people to have speech habits that are more than physiological and developmental, they are social and performative even if they are not always consciously deliberate. Many people don’t even realize they exhibit speech patterns that performative or that they might even adjust to different performative forms with different social groups. There’s a good chance everyone here does some form of vocal performance under the right conditions that feels normal and natural to each person. Sometimes it’s all matter of adjusting one’s speech habits to match social situations because it’s comfortable to fit on a subconscious level.
Please watch the whole thing, because it is really important to get the whole picture and why it is not always purpose or fake rather in most cases neither. It is not new or only a thing for young people or women or celebrities or people who want to sound like it. One might like it or not but focusing on it being something bad is unfair (especially for Finnish people) and it currently is unfortunately used against women that just can’t get it right for some - I guess women should shut up.
I understand if someone doesn’t like it, but I have yet to hear wide spread criticism of Bond, James Bond or other men who do it, so I am suspicious if it is mentioned anywhere. The video has so many examples, yet no one hated these for the last 50 years, some of these speakers are even iconic ones that everyone knows.
I cant right now, id have to find some time.
I more mean i understand what JoeyP was talking about with the preppy or valley voice that is usually tied to like wealthy california areas or something in the u.s.
Someone from a country where everyone has a dialect that sounds that way is a completely different thing from what i was pointing to.
I dont have an issue with anyone in particular.
To be fair as well i thought it was like a microphone issue when it was brought up initially lol. But anyway im not going to say any more about it as i dont feel like i can articulate my thoughts about it with the limited knowledge i have.
