I heard the same and I almost didn’t bother trying! Of course, everyone’s definition of “playable” will vary, but I found it to be good enough for portable play whenever I don’t want to be at my desk. Outdoor areas regularly fall into the 20-25 fps range at worst, and the adaptive resolution in combination with FSR2 can make New Atlantis look hideous. But many indoor locations can keep 30+ fps.
Maybe I’ll encounter more hitches later, I’m only a few hours in, but I plan to keep playing the game this way from time to time.
For those curious, because I was experiencing issues with GeForce Now , I went back to playing BG3 on my Deck when connected to my TV, rather then just handheld. It’s still handling Act 3 of the game quite well.
Thats awesome. I used Emulation Station and the guide I used did a pretty good job making sure I didn’t good anything up. The biggest thing i was waiting for was my 1tb microsd.
I just find it cumbersome to add roms to it, but that may be just me.
I installed emudeck to avoid any kind of issue tbh. Where I did find an issue coincidentally was during rom loading. Not because it was complex but because the deck wasn’t detecting my externa drive. So I bought an USBC flash drive for the sole purpose of rom transfers and it didn’t detect it either. So I formatted it to a format that could be read both in windows and steam os and that didn’t solve the issue. What did solve the issue was finding a 1-2 years old reddit thread saying that “if your usb port magically stops working, hold lower volume key and the … button until you hear a sound, because that resets the USB ports on the deck”. It was really weird but worked so I won’t complain.
Beyond that, I hate the screenshot input. Half the time it triggers an action in game rather than taking a screenshot. I usually bind it to another button, but you need to do that for every game and I often forget to do it at the start of each game.
Something only tangentially Steam Deck related. I’ve been experiencing a weird bug in BG3. I can’t seem to use combine/insert on my PC. I don’t know why but it never seems to work correctly. When I launch the game on my Deck, though, it works fine.
I don’t see why not, the entire Halo Master Chief Collection is playable on Steam Deck. A good resource for confirming playability, and even optimal Deck settings is ProtonDB. The Master Chief Collection is listed as Gold on ProtonDB, which means it should work perfectly well.
Will it have Proton, though? Surely an older version is easy to get but does Steam release the source code for the latest versions? Or will it depend on GE?
Hello everyone, I don’t even have a Steam Deck yet, but would y’all recommend getting a Steam Deck Dock? If so, should I fork over more money for the official one, or are third-party docks sufficient?
I don’t have a dock because I don’t have a TV so can’t say anything about that but I love my Deck. I only have a Switch besides my laptop so my console games are limited and the Deck allows to me to play lots of games that really need a controller. Don’t know if that’s a need for you. It’s also convenient to carry around and play games while traveling.
It’s best feature, however, is that it allows for traditional keyboard/mouse controls that most PC games depend on. This opens up a lot of games if you play more point and click style games.
Overall, I love my Deck and recommend it if you’re looking for something to meet similar needs.
I’m really excited to get my hands on one! The more I read about it, the more features I discover. It really is quite an impressive device. I grew up playing only PlayStation so I’ll be using my Steam Deck primarily to emulate Nintendo games, and PS1 & PSP games. Of course, I’ll also use it to play Steam games, and maybe I’ll try casting my PS5 to it and I’ll see how well that works.
I’m wondering about the Dock because I’ve always wished that I could connect my Steam to my family’s huge living room TV for when my friends come over, since I have a lot of couch co-op and horror games on Steam that I’d love to play on the big screen. And I think a Dock will make that desire come true.
