Push the Steam button while on home and go to settings and all the way at the bottom of settings you’ll see storage. That gives you a visual breakdown of what’s on your drive (games vs shaders vs anything else) or and the total number of bytes for each game.
I just switched some games from internal storage to the memory card instead and that seemed to fix it but thanks !
Does anyone else find that Steam Cloud uploads are somewhat unreliable, especially for games with large save files? Sometimes I have to retry cloud save uploads several times before they’ll actually upload. I don’t know if it’s a Deck thing, or just a Steam thing.
Yes, I’ve been having this experience a lot with Baldur’s Gate 3. Every time I switch from my Deck to my PC and vice versa, I always have to go nudge it and retry to upload my cloud saves before I can play. I think the main source of my issues has been with the Deck though, it seems to get more hung up on uploading than the desktop Steam app does.
My thought was that it is due to the size. My saves are close to three gigs in total, so I figured it would hang and fail half way through. Especially since I haven’t encountered this problem with any other games, and none of the other games I play have large game save files.
I also find Larian’s cross save isn’t great. I don’t need it yet, but I want it for cross save with PS5. But it takes so long to upload that I sometimes can’t resave for quite a while. Autosaves can also fail in that time. Occasionally it even hangs and I can’t save or load at all. I hope it’s sorted out by the PS5 launch.
For anyone playing BG3 on a SteamDeck, how’s the experience? I’ve read comments all over the place, even saying that it gets unplayable after the firdt two acts. Is that for real?
I haven’t had any issues and Larian just dropped a huge patch. Act 3 has issues in general because it wasn’t part of early access so they weren’t able to test it quite as thoroughly, but the patch is supposed to fix that. Keep in mind the issues were largely game specific, not Deck specific. I’m having no real issues on the Steam Deck other than the system occasionally not registering my controller when I’m connected to my TV, which might be more of a Stream Deck issue than BG3. But let me put it a different way, I’ve put over 100 hours into this game, all completely on Steam Deck, and half the time connected to my TV. Don’t expect 60fps, but it can hit 40. Initially I had my Deck set to 40fps and 40Hz and while there were dips, it was fine. But textures from a distance were not great, even if character closeups were quite nice. I switched to 24fps and 48Hz while following a setup guide from Overkill. Given the turn based nature of the game there isn’t much need for high fps, so this works well. So well in fact that the game looks spectacular now, and I feel less inclined to pick up the PS5 version.
Update on this, and I’m well into Act 3 and no issues so far. My frame rate is suffering a bit but I think it has everything to do with the fact that I’m wandering around the map with two Elemental summons and a Cambian in tow, making my party a bit larger than it was in the middle of act two.
I kind of wonder what does suffering mean
Frame dips. Nothing terrible but the more going on, the more it can happen. It’s not limited to the Steam Deck though. Digital Foundary talks about it in their analysis. In Act 3 there are more frame dips, and what DF did to test it was recruit a bunch of minions so that the party size balloons, resulting in a less stable frame rate. I could drop some of the settings back down to medium and it would probably help.
Good to hear it’s not SteamDeck limited, more likely to be fixed in upcoming patches then.
I haven’t yet hit a point where I feel like it’s hurting the enjoyment of the game.
Just ordered a 512gb SD card. Finally sold on the SD deck ![]()
I hope you like it. And hit this thread up if you have questions. One of the Grouvee Steam Deck owners can likely help.
P.S. I forgot to mention that my frame issues in BG3 were when I was connected to my TV, so it’s when it defaults to 60fps and dips from there. In handheld I have a lower fps at 48Hz and it hold solid so far.
If you haven’t already, I would highly recommend purchasing a 1TB MicroSD card as well. It will help with storage as the 512gb will quickly disappear.
I bought a SanDisk Extreme 1TB and it was $110 through Amazon. Easy to format and no issues with installation and thereafter.
The case that you’ll get is very sturdy as well, well worth the additional price.
In terms of a dock, you can go with a third party, which will serve you well. I got the Valve dock and I dig it, although I wish it had ports on the front as well, instead of just the back.
What are you putting on that card, lol? I have a 512 and it’s not even half full. Admittedly I have 256GB built-in but the only game I have on my Deck that’s significantly large is BG3.
Be careful with memory on Amazon. There is quite a lot of counterfeits circulating on Amazon. I recommend going to brick and mortar stores that you trust.
Isn’t the case a default pack-in? I didn’t pay more for mine. That said, I highly recommend a smaller case because the Valve pack-in is huge. I went with a Tomtoc slim case, similar to the one I have for my Switch. It shaves off at least a third of the size of the pack-in case.
Be careful with third party. They need to support the PD protocol and need to be able to pass at least 45w through to the Steam Deck. Some adapters don’t match those specs. I’m running a 130w Thunderbolt dock which works well.
It arrived today while I was at work. Won’t have time to turn it on until Saturday, so what do you all experienced users recommend for a new user like me?
Also, SteamDeck Pro announcement confirmed for tomorrow morning.
That’s a question with a million possible answers. I suggest playing around with it, boot into desktop mode, check that out, boot back into console mode, install some games, see how they play. And then figure out what you want to do beyond just playing games on Steam.
Emulation: If you want to emulate check out EmuDeck. It’s a nice seamless installer solution for almost all emulation needs.
GoG and Epic: if you want to play games from GoG or Epic, checkout Heroic Game Launcher which lets you install games from other stores, handle unique Wine versions for running them on Linux and even adds your games to Steam so you can access them in console mode.
Itch.io: lots of Itch.io have Linux binaries so you can install them directly. But you can also just install the Itch.io app, and install games that only have Window binaries through the app and via Proton.
Game Pass Cloud Streaming: if you have access to Game Pass and want to stream games to your Deck, Microsoft published official instructions on how to set Edge up for Game Pass on Steam Deck.
PlayStation Remote Play: if you have a PS4 or PS5, you can use Chiaki to remote play games from either console on your Steam Deck. It works swimmingly.
Beyond that, if you have specific questions just post them here.
I’ve been playing a bit of Starfield on my Deck. The game runs pretty well. Performance sure suffers a LOT in a place like New Atlantis, but in most scenarios I found it to be playable.
Oh wow, everything I heard said it was basically unplayable so I’m happy to hear that’s not strictly the case.
