Projects

Holy shit that is awesome! I’m inept at wood working. Barely made a compost bin from scraps and it is such a piece of garbage. This is way better than what I can make!

I have been replacing some door knobs with vintage/antique glass and enamel knobs. Fun project, learning as I go. The results are sure better looking than a lame brass knob!

Video game related I replaced the disc drive for 2x Wiis. Got the consoles cheap due to the failed drive. Bought the OEM drives from Ebay for I think $20 each. Now I have 3 working Wiis.

I’ve been drawing and painting, no luck selling anything but I’m not putting a ton of time and effort into it. I closed my art business because revenue was pathetic so I’ve been focusing on my full time job which is challenging but I love it!

As an ex art student and teacher who has had many exhibitions…don’t worry too much about selling stuff. For some reason the world at large still doesn’t see art as something that has monetary value and that artists should be compensated for their time, thus they want it all for free. Just do it for the love of creating.

Hey folks, I just started a new project. Again, something I’ve been wanting to do for a while; it’s basically a blog where I talk about comics, games and collecting. My aim is to have deeper articles than “blog” would suggest. Anyway, would appreciate it if folks took a moment to check it out. Feedback is always welcome too.

This is the final finished project. It’s my first “big” piece. I think people call these buffets. It turned out pretty darn well I think. Now I’ve gone off and spent way too much money on new tools for my next project!

It’s very nice. Time to start a third business?

Haha. Only if I can come up with a good company name that has Peter and wood in it.

Easy:

  • Wood by Peter
  • Peter-built Hardwood (needs the syphon so you don’t get sued)
  • Peter’s Got Wood

All good, no innuendos in the lot!

That is incredible! I wish I had any kind of talent at that kind of thing.

I’ve never mentioned this on here (Grouvee) before, but I actually took creative writing when I was at Uni. I submitted a few things to small press and had a few successes, but nothing major. However, my wife encouraged me to get back into it and yesterday I passed 5,000 words on my current work-in-progress. May not sound like a lot, but it feels like a huge milestone.

It is absolutely a lot, congrats on that milestone. Writing is a tough thing to do and that’s commendable.

Since everyone is chipping in about non-game specific projects, I wanted to mention that I’ve started shooting film 35mm film photography after about twenty or so years of shooting digital. It feels great to be shooting on film again, even if most of my rolls have basically been test shoots and not anything super interesting in terms of subject. I’ve started an Instagram account specifically for my film shots. I don’t expect anything will be particularly mind blowing to anyone (at least not yet).

Wow, that’s really cool! Is it hard to source the film and paper? I haven’t done traditional photography since art school, but I loved it despite not being any good at it. :joy: The uni I went to, and many of the schools I’ve taught out, ended up ripping out their traditional dark rooms and enlargers for digital labs. It’s a shame as that knowledge will be lost.

It’s not hard but film and paper is not as abundant as it once was. But Kodak, Fuji, Agfa and Ilford still make film, not to mention a whole host of smaller new black & white producers. The easiest to get into is black & white because it’s the most available and least expensive. That said paper is much more expensive than it once was. Black & white RC paper which was about $30-40 CAD a box twenty years ago is now $125-150 CAD. Fibre paper, which was always my preference, has skyrocketed from $60 CAD in the early 2000s to $200-300 CAD a box. These are boxes of 100 sheets but what used to cost a few cents per sheet now costs a few dollars.

Fortunately we have active clubs with darkrooms and at least two of the Universities didn’t get rid of their darkrooms. I haven’t ventured back into darkroom yet, I’m just scanning my negs for now. If I have things I really like I will likely want to print some images in the darkroom. Right now I feel like I’m just getting my photographic eye back, lol.

Still on the topic of photography, I just picked up a new lens and am excited to try it out. It’s a 45mm pancake lens that I can put on one of my smaller manual SLRs turning it into a perfect pocket street shooter.

First roll shot with the new lens is back, and the shots look fantastic. Here’s one example:

I appear to be on some kind of photography high, but I got my mother’s old Olympus AF-1 working and shot a test roll today. I’m hoping the light meter is working and the shots turn out, but everything else about the camera seems mechanically sound. I should have the roll back from developing tomorrow. Wish me luck.

I reorganized my comic book collection recently. I wrote about the process and what I did differently this time around here: Organizing Comics - Tyler Sticka

But the biggest recent “project” I’ve taken on was adopting a puppy back in March. I wrote about how much of a learning experience that’s been (and shared some cute photos): Raising Buster - Tyler Sticka

Both really great reads. That’s an impressive collection, and even more impressive cataloguing and organization. I think the closest I come to organizing anything in my life that carefully is my camera gear.

By the way, somewhat a tangent but my cat’s name is also Buster :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Thanks!

Aw, it’s such a cute name… especially if they can be a bit of a stinker sometimes.

He definitely can be, no question. I named him Buster after Buster Keaton, and my partner teases me about not naming him Buster Kitten.

In your partner’s defense, that is an excellent pun.
