Movies and TV, Anyone?

Have you watched the old Nippon anime series from 1979 and if so, how would
You compare this new production to that?

I’ve only seen a handful of episodes of that one maybe almost two decades ago. It was dubbed into our local language, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the local distributor also took liberties with the translation and cutting scenes. One thing that I am sure with is that the 1979 anime took its time more with the story progression, while this new one is breezing through the material. It doesn’t feel rushed though. I also have the impression that this recent one, three episodes in, is less grave with its depiction of the adults and is altogether more whimsical.

Rewatched Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Seriously don’t understand why it gets so much hate, it’s a bloody great film!

A bunch of feelings have spurned me on to finally rewatch Twin Peaks in its entirety. It’ll be my third rewatch of the entire saga (comprising three seasons of television, a movie and supplemental material): firstly was in 2014 when I bought a Blu-ray player specifically to watch The Entire Mystery boxset; then again in 2017 before watching The Return as it was airing; and finally rewatching The Return on home release in 2020. So I guess it’s been at least five years since I’ve seen the whole thing, and it’s one of my favourite things so it’s long overdue.

I’ll be listening to some rewatch podcasts to keep me company as I progress through: namely Idle Thumbs’ Twin Peaks Rewatch and Nextlander’s Watchcast series on Twin Peaks. Happy for anyone to join in if you’re a fan or are interested in checking it out!

After playing Fight of Gods, decided to re-watch Prince of Egypt ! Moses was in it–though, looking at the DVD cover doesn’t seem to mention that this is the story of Exodus

–Seems the monarchy in this tale isn’t too interested in being…humanitarian, you might say

– When Moses k-lled a guy and ran away into the desert, I thought of The Lion King. And lo and behold–the composer is Hans Zimmer !

– Hotep and Huy are voiced respectively by Steve Martin and Martin Short. So if there were a third guy, he would have to be voiced by Short Steve

– The plagues. Did you ever see Messed Up Bible Stories [on YouTube]: “… again, I suggest we just k-ll the Pharaoh!”

– I liked when the soldiers drowned in the Red Sea and Aaron said “well, THAT just happened !”

So my American friends, what does it feel like knowing you might have to pay 100% tariffs on foreign films, Anime and anything filmed outside the US (most of your films)?

i gotta look up what that shit even means. like if a film shoots over seas but is a hollywood production, is it facing a tariff? how the hell does one monitor that shit with streaming? what about the big feature of VPN’s spoofing a foreign address to let you stream another country’s catalogue? IDK it’s absolute mush from the world’s mushiest man.

Yes.

It has mostly to do with production with fallout on distribution, and it will affect the ability of distributors to pick up international films to fill cinemas between tentpole Hollywood films. And all those international films that Netflix picks up to fill out their catalogue will suddenly change from being inexpensive films available from distributors in package deals to exceptionally costly.

Not always as easy as it used to be because services like Netflix already crack down on repeated roaming, but you can use it to sidestep this to a degree. But if services like Netflix have to pay more for titles they’ll likely just pass the costs on to the end user and a VPn won’t let you skip rising prices.

This also strikes me as a good way to exert control over the messages in domestic media and to keep media critical of things like facist ideology out of the country :man_shrugging:t4:

Seems pretty ironic that a US president is accusing other countries of “messaging and propaganda” as if 80% of US films aren’t self aggrandising wank fests.

I’m pretty sure Trump will put in pro-himself messages if/where he can. He clearly wants a totalitarian state.

It seems to me that the production is the wrong thing to go after. The first Avengers film made something like $2 billion. Add to that merchansode and royalties and it’s gonna be a huge sum. Most of that money would have gone back to Disney, so why isn’t Trump going after companies such as them to get the cut he believes he deserves rather than other countries?

It just reeks of him trying to make a dictatoral walled garden out of the US while still expecting the rest of the world to bow down to it. For one, I really hope the rest of the world takes the stance of Chinela and France and tells him to sod off.

This was my first thought. Keep the ideas out that challenge the “king”. Of course there will be exceptions for the films that portrait him favorably, for a personal fee or so.

That’s essentially what it is. Tariffs will hit the US and Hollywood, so companies like Disney. It won’t cost the originating film company more, it will just raise the prices to import them, which has the indirect effect of potentially hurting the wider reach of those films. But in the end the people forking over the dollars to cover the tariffs will be US audiences.

That said it could hurt the production industries that support Hollywood, like Canada, where many films are made due to our lower dollar and superior film crews.

I’m sure it won’t be long before he installs official script readers at every studio to ensure Hollywood stories are ideologically in support of his Glorious Message. I bet he can even make the Hays Code seem like child’s play in comparison.

Just got out of Thunderbolts. It was really fun. I especially appreciated the way they did Sentry’s powers. Highly recommended.

So, in a sense, watching the company’s content on demand has changed from HBO Now to HBO Go to HBO Max to Max to HBO Max.

I am sure this will solve all problems. If it fails they could just call it “X” and drop the “MA”… wait, that didn’t work for someone else already. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Honestly has anyone ever called it “Max” that wasn’t paid to do so? When CEOs have nothing more to ruin, they change names back and forth. It is so to speak their “Meta game” (yes I am proud of this one!).

I watched Mars Attacks for the first time on Tuesday ! Wasn’t sure what to think at first. There were a lot of people in it, including both Joker and Penguin [as in, their actors]

I thought the part where Mars Attacks was kind of funny, in a dark kind of way. I think the message is to try to take care of each other

Some people/animals die, so watch out for that

Catching up on The Last of Us. I know the scene with Ellie playing guitar is trying to capture the magic of the Nick Offerman episode. The effectiveness of which is debatable. But fuck, that was a gorgeously framed scene.

Final Destination: Bloodlines is the first time since…probably Prey that I’ve actually liked and cared about the characters in a horror movie.

the Rehearsal morphed into something truly fascinating over the course of its second season. i wonder how much of that nathan was thinking of two years ago. i dont know where the show goes from here, but im definitely ready to watch whatever comes next.

call your doctor back nathan
