Seems accurate for most of that studio’s work.
Safe is one of my favourite movies ever made, and my favourite Todd Haynes movie. It makes me happy when people watch it, and happy when people then recommend it to others.
Did you know he wasn’t sure about Moore and wanted someone else but when she did the voice she used in the film, Haynes knew it was perfect. And thus began a beautiful career of collaborations between the two of them.
i’ve seen two now of their films together, and my limited view is that partnership makes perfect sense. she is just perfect in this and may december. very particular roles that she just nails.
i watched Frances Ha, and i think i am finally able to put to words what i like so much about noah baumbach films. he puts these heavy ideas in such light packaging that it feels like the best kind of therapy. you are able to process these harder truths about life because the character you are following is able to do it and do it hopefully. i adored frances ha and found it delightful throughout. i especially liked how frances fills the role of provider and protector towards the end of the film, a role which she has often relied on. but she only made it there by hitting rock bottom. have i hit rock bottom? can i accept my station in life and deliver my best? i hope so!
Yesterday I watched the first Harry Potter movie again.
I miss adventure films where entertaining and curious events happens one after another.
Tonight, we re-watched the 2003 smash hit ELF !
– Walter has a secret son he didn’t know about–he must’ve had SEX
– An evil/naughty guy is in charge of childrens’ books?! Sheesh, never meet your heroes ! And he was involved in some pitch meetings…watchin’ Pitch Meetings is TIGHT !
– We never do get to hear what Miles’s idea was; I guess it’d’ve never lived up to the audience’s expectations. I like how serious he is about the kids books; I did hear it’s a competitive field
– He’s pretty smooth, asking Jovie to meet and eat food ! Going to try that with my friend next time. I was actually going to take her to a new place on Tuesday, but unfortunately she is prone to migraines that sometimes disrupt our plans : [
– Speaking of migraines, I heard he got one from eating all that stuff–that’s why people rarely actually eat in movies ! Except in Edward Scissorhands…where he threw up ! That’s why people rarely actually eat in movies !
– Speaking of Jovie, this is kind of the same plot and actress as the recent Harold and the Purple Crayon. Except that she’s a mommy in the latter
– Elf, elf baby
elf elf baby
i like the first 2/3rds of elf. i think all the humor gets sucked out of the last 30 minutes as they try for a grand ending. thats what holds it back in my mind as an top tier christmas film.
you gunna watch home alone this holiday season? that one is a top tier christmas film. watched it the other day with the kids and it holds up.
I saw Moana 2 last Wednesday out of curiosity and I have never felt a worse case of buyer’s remorse with the 50 cents that I spent on a ticket. Then I rewatched Moana 1 today and that was good. Plan on seeing Flow soon.
The ending of Elf sort of reminded me of one I’ve seen a few times, where you see everyone he’s met along the way sending their power. Like in Paper Mario, Shaman King, etc.
Home Alone is one of my favorites ! I was supposed to watch it with my favorite lady on Tuesday, but unfortunately her re-ocurring migraines disrupted our plans. Hopefully next week
When we do, I have a new shirt for the occasion
when james caan sings, its basically goku killing kid buu with a spirit bomb.
Speaking of top tier Christmas movies, the two best Christmas movies are:
- The Christmas Story
- Black Christmas
Both directed by Bob Clark.
I’m actually going to watch a 16mm screening of Black Christmas on Saturday.
Hey, the Pitch Meeting today happens to be Elf ! I watched it
Going to see my favorite waitress in a few [my friend] at work–she got me into Pitch Meetings, and got a shirt for both of us
Yeah, if Walter hadn’t started singing for real, Santa’s sleigh would’ve run over all those people. Close call !
thats the ending i wanted to see. a bunch of people getting murdered by santa on the local news.
watched both beetlejuice movies, and they are fun. i had seen the original when i was a kid and didn’t remember much about it beyond alec baldwin making his face look like spy vs spy. while the movie has more going for it than that (its funny, has good dialogue, and a fun sense of style), it is hollow. i’d describe both films that way as they don’t seem to have much in terms of plots or themes. this is less a criticism of the films than it is a reality of them. in their defense, i dont know if a heavier film would work with the character of beetlejuice. the joy of the films are found in keaton playing the absurd scumbag reverse exorcist. i don’t think that schtick has legs in a movie where the parent/child dynamic is treated with any sincerity. i guess what i mean to say is both beetlejuice* films are fun but don’t expect much else. i slightly prefer the original to the new one (despite willem dafoe showing up in two as a dead actor who is maybe just performing the role of afterlife detective) as it feels like it wraps up more of its plotlines. i recommend them both, but if you find the beetlejuice character obnoxious instead of silly, then don’t bother. there is nothing for you here!
*ahh i said it three times!
wow i can finally see one of my favorite games, pac-man, come to life.
secret level was always just a curiosity, but now it isnt even that.
one other quick thought- i think the new mario movie could have taken more chances and i hope they do take more chances in the announced sequel. however, i am glad they didnt stray so much from the game that they made mario a- oh i dont know- a manipulator angel developing and murdering clones to receive some kind of freedom.
Also watched both of these this year, my friend got me into them; and I got to take her to 2. I think I like the 2nd one better ! Beetlejuice is a little more subdued and funny. I like when he sings
The weird thing about Adam and Barbara turning their faces scary, is that it’s established that most people can’t see them. So, what were they even planning to do with that. And then why can people see Beetlejuice ? He must know the cheat code
Actually, both Beetlejuice and my favorite childhood series–Shaman King–happen to have a team of Football Player ghosts [who apparently died in a crash]. Wonder if that’s just a coincidence
i just dont like how unresolved the end of beetlejuice 2 feels. willem dafoe plot just end. monica belucci plot just ends. even beetlejuice’s quest to marry winona ryder just ends because of a technicality that we find out about in the same scene. im not saying this flippant attitude isn’t throughout the film. heck they do a similar thing at the end of the first film with beetlejuice getting blasted by the sand worm. im just more bothered by it in the second film because the second film sets up more plot points that get shooed away.
regardless, i had fun with them both.
You might want to check out the Pitch Meeting for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice [on YouTube]; they make fun of it having too many plots
Beetlejuice x Lydia…I wonder if they could have a healthy relationship if she can’t say his name. Weird that you summon and banish him the same way, even
they also say “home home home” at least once to get away. the rules are inconsistent but at least the movies have fun with that part of it.
So what’s everyone’s favourite Christmas movie? Mine, as anyone whose known me here for a while has probably guessed, is Ghostbusters 2.
