Grouvee's Game of the Year - 2019 Edition

Hey everyone! I know I’ve been out of commission for a while  but I’m back and here to ask: what was your FAVOURITE GAME OF 2019? We have had quite a few that come to mind that really were fantastic, but which one tops them all? With the Golden Joysticks over and done with and the Game Awards on their way, I believe Grouvee should have it’s own Game Awards of sorts. The only category for now will simply be “Game of the Year”, more I think would be a little overwhelming. Please leave a vote in the poll, the results will be counted and released January 1st 2020. If you don’t see your game of year below, leave a comment with “VOTE: insert game title here”. You get only one vote and I will be counting  and don’t be afraid to discuss why you voted who you voted for and whether you would like more categories! See you in 2020!

I’m going with Untitled Goose Game this year.

This year was a really good one for games with some top tier stuff being spread throughout the year. From the ones I played, I adored Super Mario Maker 2, really enjoyed Resident Evil 2, am currently loving Luigi’s Mansion co-op, am always good for a round of Smash with friends, was pleasantly surprised by DMC5, will always be a fan of MK11, and loved what Obsidian did with The Outer Worlds.

However, those were all done by big established teams whose quality you could mostly count on. Untitled Goose was a game long in gestation from a small team and what they accomplished in the scant 3 hours or so of game time elicited more joy than most games with quadruple that gameplay length. All I want from games is joy and this delivered several times over. Again, the other titles were great and I’m sure they’ll get their votes and awards but for me, as a fan of the underdog, this is my personal GOTY for 2019.

It looks pretty fun, and unique. I love short little funny games like it so I definitely plan on picking it up down the road.

This was a really great year for games. As for my number 1, it’s a really tough choice between Outer Wilds and Disco Elysium. Disco Elysium was one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played but Outer Wilds was just so innovative and full of wonder. I may have to flip a coin.

I still have many games to play from 2019, I cannot vote.

Excellent choice. It may be short but the experience sticks with you and the music is completely awesome. You could make the case that the game is a perfect example of how video games can at least be pop art in the same way that a concept album would.

I’m going with Slay the Spire. Technically been around on PC for a while but it just had its console release and the Switch is a perfect fit for the game.

What did everyone think of the VGAs? Sekiro winning GOTY was definitely surprising but well-deserved but I would have put money on Death Stranding winning. Goes to show that Death Stranding is a more divisive than I thought but it did end up winning Best Game Direction, Best Score, and Mads Mikklesen’s Best Performance, which I believe Death Stranding earned. Biggest surprise this year was the indie game Disco Elysium. I have never heard of it, but it ended up sweeping the VGAs by winning Best Fresh Indie Developer, Best Indie Game, Best Narrative and Best RPG. Wow. I guess Untitled Goose Game was too short for the voters? Could have sworn that Death Stranding was going to win Best Narrative and for Best RPG I would have honestly guessed every other game in the category over Disco Elysium, so to anyone who has played it: Tell me if you Disco Elysium is the best RPG you played this year. Sky Children of Light got snubbed in the Best Mobile Game category. Anyone who has played Journey or flower knows thatgamecompany is house full of geniuses and knows Call of Duty Mobile didn’t deserve the award at all. Fire Emblem Three Houses won Best Strategy Game but was also the Player’s Voice Choice, meaning that the audience would have nominated it for GOTY. Overall the rest of the categories were no-brainers, though I can’t really speak for the esports categories I personally think they are boring. The Awards Show itself is growing to be really long and I found myself pretty bored watching it. Very few game announcements excited me though I did appreciate the new looks at Hellblade 2, No More Heroes 3, Bravely Default 2, Godfall, New World, Naraka Blade Point, Sons of the Forest and most importantly FINAL FANTASY 7 REMAKE AND GHOST OF TSUSHIMA HAVE RELEASE DATES. We still have Grouvee’s Awards still ongoing so be sure to cast your votes before the end of the year! Just going by Grouvee’s Top 250, the favourites seem to be Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Resident Evil 2 (Remake), Fire Emblem Three Houses, Sekiro Shadows Die Twice and Devil May Cry 5. But this awards show is about our MOST ACTIVE Grouvee so please cast your votes! See you in the new year!

I feel that! I haven’t beaten anything from 2019, I only played a bit of Luigi’s Mansion .

Disco Elysium is the best RPG I’ve ever played.

For me it has to be Outer Wilds, that game is simply amazing in so many different ways, totally blew me away, might even be my game of the century.

I’d have to say Outer Wilds, the gameplay loop is amazing and having no knowledge of it prior I expected a mediocre crown funding game.

For me 2019 has been rather lack luster for games, but this is likely to be the cause of my focus on reducing backlog rather than picking up new games. Borderlands 3, Outer Worlds and Jedi Fallen Order were good games, and it was a nice change from the usual micro-transactions clutter but nothing mind blowing.

One game I really want to try is Disco Elysium, everything I have seen and heard about it scratches that itch I never knew I had haha.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! 2020 is here and Grouvee has chosen it’s favorite game from 2019 and it was honestly no surprise when reading the comments on this thread: OUTER WILDS. Then for second place are the tied Fire Emblem Three Houses and Sekiro Shadows Die Twice! My favorite “Game of the Year”, Smash Bros. Ultimate made it in fourth place getting beaten out by the Fallout-inspired sci-fi RPG The Outer Worlds. Thank you everyone so much for voting and I am wholeheartedly looking forward to 2020 and the games it will bring. My eyes are set specifically on Animal Crossing New Horizons, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Cyberpunk 2077, The Last of Us Part 2, Ghost of Tsushima and most importantly Hollow Knight Silk Song. I hope 2020 is a year that gives you all many wonderful experiences and happiness! Take care and enjoy the new year!
