Grouvee’s Official Final Fantasy XIV Discussion Thread and General Hangout

The game autoupdates your portraits when you confirm your gear set. Those are all my existing gear set portraits, albeit with my costumes on. If you take the costumes of they are all pretty cute portraits, the costumes just transform them from cute to silly.

I had a busy couple of weeks there so didn’t have too much time to play, but I should be on more this week. When are you guys typically on, if you have consistent hours that is?

My most available time is any time Saturdays at the moment. But I am occasionally on early mornings other days in the week before work (now that I’m back at work) or before I have to do other things. But if there is an evening that people want to run some content or just generally hang out, I can schedule time to make it work.

I usually play on the weekends so Friday - Sunday. Doesn’t really matter the time.

I posted this in Discord but thought I should post it here too.

Checking to see if people are still interested in playing FFXIV tomorrow. I have an FC event from 5-7pm to attend but otherwise free the rest of the day before and after.

Putting this here for any FFXIV players interested, I’ll be in the FFXIV Discord VC shortly.

I have been thinking of trying to start a character in XIV again. I beat the base campaign a few years ago and then dropped it right after because I didn’t really understand the combat, I’d have to keep dropping the difficulty of boss encounters… I’ve only played the offline Final Fantasies but never really messed with MMOs.

I think the last time I played I tried archer/ranger because I heard it was the most basic class but I didn’t understand what I was doing. Maybe I could try a healer or something, I like playing as the medic in Team Fortress… but then I feel a lot of pressure to perform optimally in raids and dungeons. This pressure is why I don’t really like online games. It could be I’m just not cut out for them!

I’d be happy to help you learn the ropes. I’m a healer main so I can definitely either help you understand the role, or help you run content so you can learn other jobs. It’s also easy to hop to different data centres so I could always join you on whatever server you decide to set up camp.

No pressure, just an offer of help on the table should you want it.

I know nothing about healer but I could at least be a DPS for you to test your healing on or practice tanking while you practice healing. We can try to run with a dedicated group so you don’t have to worry about randoms being in your party.

If you do decide to join again, and are wanting to start on an NA server, definitely recommend trying to start in Aether/Faerie but if you can’t, we can server travel.

Aether is 100% congested. We can’t even make alts on Faerie right now. Until they convince people to move to other newer servers, I don’t think anyone is making a toon on Faerie, sadly.

I’d offer to join so we have a four man party (even if it’s just to hang out) but my sub has lapsed and I’m not renewing right away. Gonna focus on other games until I get drawn back to XIV.

Honestly I could end up resubbing later this month, it just depends on how much free time I have, haha.

No sweat! The major reason I resubbed was because I have a bit more free time as the year starts winding down, so I definitely understand. I’m playing slowly on a fresh character right now, so I’m sure I’ll still be working through content at my own pace when/if you decide to resub. No pressure!

I ended up going with my local Oceanic data centre (Ravana in Materia). I went with an Arcanist so that I can eventually try out Summoner because I read that may be a good class for me to try, but I’ll for sure be swapping around jobs and seeing what fits me best. Of course feel free to recommend a job y’all think could be lower-pressure for a beginner. I’ll definitely give it a try!

My Lalafell, Ogomo Midegomo’s journey has started off quite well! Even though he has a different name, he sorta just looks like a little(r) version of me, except with more magical rings and a marking of the branded from FFXVI. So there, that’s different!

Last time I tried the game, I was definitely too hasty rushing through the base game content. Can you blame me? I wanted to fly around on a mount, try the classes locked behind level requirements, or do optional etc etc etc… but this time around I’ve been enjoying it more by taking my time and learning the systems as much as I can. The busywork of mundane sidequests is my favourite part of these kind of games, so I’ve been getting lost with that in between story and guild quests, as well as soaking up all the in-game tutorialisation and training exercises I can so as to get to grips with MMO combat. This has all helped a lot in digesting the game, like inching into a body of water rather than doing a cannonball and then being mad at myself for not being smart enough to understand when I didn’t really give myself a chance to learn the fundamentals and have a solid foundation.

So far I’ve had a fine time with arcanist, with abilities eked out as I come to understand them. I have a better sense for the skill rotation here than I did with archer. Early goings it was difficult to wrap my mind around the Carbuncle stuff, but as I’ve continued cycling between elements has become more comfortable. I still don’t feel as comfortable as I want to on a controller; I don’t really like the cross hotbar. The way skills haphazardly stack into it is so messy and requires a lot of re-ordering as I learn the usecases for my abilities. Like, summoning the elemental carbuncles is very important, so I should keep that on-hand… but do I really need the vanilla carbuncle in my main hotbar, who I usually only need to summon once at the start of an instance? AND pet commands? That’s too many icons for me to handle! It becomes very cluttered very quickly and has needed lots of management, and targeting can also be a pain… but each session I go a little bit deeper into the customization settings and learn about a feature and tweak it to my preference. Keeping a keyboard plugged in has been handy too.

Anyway, I’m having a good time. I enjoy the writing, atmosphere and looking at all the different cool warriors of light! I’m not really looking forward to the instanced dungeons, but I’m at the least feeling more confident about playing my role well, but moreso figuring out what I can do better when I make mistakes and things go wrong.

If it’s helpful at all I could show you how I handle my crossbars so that they are easier to work with. I use a combination of the static crossbar (XHB), expanded hold controls and WXHB. My setup gives me a lot of room to see everything and feel confident in my button presses, eventually to the point that looking at the crossbar isn’t necessary.

The winter holiday event awards are so cute.

I need to play again. What a weird year.
