I understand. My default is to have it record on Steam and never actually accessed a recording before so it’s not something I even think about. I can turn it off though. Jace posting screenshots reminded me that I could share those memories with y’all.
Not a criticism, laying that out to be clear. This is why I turn it off by default, because Steam doesn’t notify people and people aren’t asked for consent. I treat it the same as any software that records people’s voices. Recording without all parties providing consent, which would likely include Steam, is prohibited in some jurisdictions. Steam should really provide clear notification that recording is underway because it’s a privacy issue.
I’m fine with people recording as long as it’s up front and everyone has agreed. I just think people should be given the chance to consent ahead of time. The way Steam handles recording undermines this, and I think it’s worth highlighting before we conduct more sessions.
I agree. I’m sorry I didn’t consider this. I’m not used to playing games with others beyond my immediate friend group so it slipped from my mind. I will do my best to get consent beforehand in the future or just remember to turn off the recording feature when participating in game nights in general.
Unless everybody says they’re okay with the recording, I will just turn it off and make sure the prior one is deleted.
It’s ok. Like I said it’s not a criticism. I just thought this was a thing that was worth laying out so that everyone has the chance to voice consent.
I appreciate it. I don’t want to make anyone uncomfortable.
Don’t worry, you didn’t! We all had a marvelous time. It’s important to have these conversations though so we know in the future. I’m personally fine with being recorded (even if I was recorded during an embarassing moment where I got trapped in a room with an open door), but consent from all recorded parties is important! As @BMO says, this is a problem with how Steam handles it; you literally didn’t consider it because of how recording is baked in. Thank you for being receptive to the heads up! It just helps all of us be more thoughtful and considerate as we continue along.
OMG that second pic is SO cute, all looking in the distance. ![]()
I still don’t know how the game knew about @BMO’s deep affection for FFX. Must be reading our memory card data or something like Psycho Mantis. Revealing the secret truths that live deep in our hearts…
