Grouvee Game Club

This look pretty fantastic? Might need to swap Costume Quest out for this as one of my two nominations:

I have Rusty Lake Hotel. I’d be down to join the Club if we play that one.

I’ll go ahead and throw in Exit 8 as a suggestion. It’s a small game that went viral a couple years ago, it seems? But it sounds interesting, and it’s only a few bucks.

There’s also an interesting looking Steam game that just came out. Bye Sweet Carole is a horror adventure game with an art style reminiscent of old Disney movies.

For my pick I’ll throw in The Witch Girls, a free Twine entry into this year’s Interactive Fiction Competition. It’s a story about two teenage witches in 2005, who use eldritch magicks to summon themselves seemingly-perfect boyfriends from the bottom of the ocean. Apparently there’s a bunch of different endings and routes that go to wild places, and push into separate spooky branches of horror.

The opening line is great: “When Mrs Courcy was found dead, her own roses growing out of her eyes, you chalked it up to coincidence, but then the boys came out of the sea.

Ooooh I love Twine!! I would totally play that. And you can’t beat the price.

I liked Obakeidoro! [also known as Bail or Jail]; that’s pretty Halloweeny if you ask me

I wondered if there’d also be the annual Halloween challenge [where you choose your own game for each category], though I’ve been keeping busy with another game FTTB

And the Halloween winner is…

The Witch Girls

The Witch Girls is a 2025 horror interactive fiction game created by Amy Stevens that you may/may not want to read the trigger warnings for. Since this is basically a story only type of game, and I prefer going in blind, I think that’s about as much information I’m willing to look up. I’m excited to play a game so indie, I hardly found any reviews for it online, so definitely consider writing one once you’re finished. :))

I got my first ending for The Witch Girls (3A).

This is very well made and brought back some bad memories from my school times. Pure horror I can tell you!

“Better a nerd than a freak.” - This one hit too close to home, that’s me in school.

“bergamot oil - Google, on the library’s computer, claimed lemon oil could be used as a substitute. “ - As a lover of bergamot oil this can only be a trap, nothing can replace this, what is a little crime if I get the real thing, right? RIGHT?

Might check out a different route on another day.

Thanks to @shinespark for posting this game!

This is a crime through and through.

Played The Witch Girls; that was pretty cool ! Once last night and again this morning, though I don’t think the ending changed for me

Poor Girls ! I can relate because sometimes I feel I would like to meet a cool girlfriend at some point, if possible

I feel like this would’ve been easier in school, because of access to people your own age, but apparently not. So of course, summoning them from the sea is the next best thing. I named my boyfriend “Turdpooer”; it’s a common name in my family

“I don’t need you to tell me the things I know are true but can’t you admit that I’m your boyfriend now ?”

Oh, poor Mrs. Courcy too

I got the ending 2A today.

“Technically I got away with murder” and what could be better than to lure the new girls in school to the hut and teach them magic, right? :face_with_hand_over_mouth: At least I can definitely rule out lemon juice now, but I knew that from the start. The roses will also be easier to get now that the piano teacher is dead, but maybe I replace them next time, can’t get worse, can it? :jack_o_lantern:

I needed to try another ending A1 and that was disgusting! shudder Nope.Nope. Nope.

That tiny bit of piano music in the background does an amazing job by the way. This would not work without it.

The sound on this computer is actually not working for whatever reason, but I was able to play on a phone which did have the sound ! So that was nice

Also played again and got the jellyfish ! That would be quite an ordeal

Went through a couple of endings last night and might binge the rest of it tonight if I have a couple hours free. This is an interesting new medium for me having never really done a text adventure / choose-your-own adventure style game. But I do like to read!

The background music definitely plays a big part in defining the vibe of this game, along with the black and white photos. I’ve gotten endings 3A and 3B, which to me felt like the most obvious paths to go down, though I suppose that’s kind of what the “game” part of this game is intended to be isn’t it? That different people will have different senses of what the obvious choices are.

I’m not sure how I feel about the story yet, since it seems like I have quite a few other paths to go down. I feel like it would make a great short-form horror film. Looking forward to going through the rest of it!

I got ending 1A. That was a very bizarre and ominous experience. The music definitely set a discomforting tone. I feel like I got one of the more boring endings but I tried to pick choices I would choose IRL. It was still weird and sad and horrible.

This was a perfect choice for Halloween. I’m glad it won and we got to play it otherwise I don’t think I would’ve ever learned of this game.

I got ending 2A. That was shorter than I expected and a bit too….something?… for me to really get it. I really like how they use choices to direct the narrative but I think I would have liked a little bit more detail. I might try another route to see how it compares.
