It’s more the convenience of not having to create further marketplace accounts and searching for sales on multiple storefronts.
That’s why I use isthereanydeal.com, which has every deal everywhere from legit stores. I don’t have to check each store individually, including Steam. I’ve even saved a substantial amount during Steam Sales when stores like Humble or Fanatical handily beat Steam sale prices. You can also often find launch games at 30% off on those stores when Steam only offers 10%.
You’re the best treasurer ever. I’m sure you’ve mentioned this place before so thank you for mentioning it again. I’ll have to remember to bookmark it when I’m home.
This game has so many things I like, but it’s not clicking for me. I think it’s the combat and I’m interested to try and put into words what doesn’t work for me as I play more.
I just checked this out and it is so helpful, you are a lifesaver.
If I recall correctly the game has some settings where you can tweak the combat a little bit. I know a common critique was that the timing windows/pay-offs were pretty all or nothing which put off some players.
Nearly forgot to pick up Ikenfell during the Steam sale but I got it for $6. What a steal. I’ll start it this weekend and let y’all know what I think of the combat since that seems to be its controversy.
It’s just like Super Mario RPG, or Clair Obscur.
What about Legend of Dragoon?
This I do not know. I don’t think I’ve played that game.
It’s not that bad except for on defense. The timing of defending seems very unforgivable. The different enemies time their attacks differently and more than once, I’ve caught a bad oops because this attack swerves on its way to get you. Even enemies I’ve faced before I’ll sometimes have to get hit first before I recall the timing.
I’m not that far in to give a better assessment of what I’ve played, but a lot of that is very similar to how Clair Obscur play with different enemy attacks and parry timing.
Hopefully gonna get started with Ikenfell tomorrow!
Okay, I’m a bit late but I started Ikenfell and played a little over an hour of it.
Chapter 1
I’m really enjoying the art style. This is like GBA pixel art, right? It’s funny because I’m not sure I would have tried this game normally because I was on the fence about whether I’d like it but so far, I’m having fun. I think I’ve found all the “secrets” so far, like the hidden Dancer and the hidden chests in the woods. I haven’t been using a guide at all and I don’t feel a real need to. I like the RPG equipment loop of finding merchants to buy from and different party members to deck out. It’s familiar and cozy. The story and setting are definitely inspired by the-book-series-we-shall-not-name but the aesthetic feels closer to Zelda. I love that to save the game you pet kitties. I think that’s really cute. I haven’t finished the first chapter yet but I’m gonna try to put another hour in either tonight or tomorrow.
EDIT: Oh, the combat is a bit difficult to perfectly time but I found if I time it the split second after myself or the enemy is hit, I usually land a GREAT. I can’t do it every time with every move, but I basically have to confirm after my gut tells me to, which is tricky to ignore hahaha.
In chapter 2, there’s some enemies that I find I get an oops on with defense all the time unless I hit the button just before it hits me. Very frustrating since the attacks aren’t all timed the same.
oo yes, the GBA comfy vibes was a big plus for me. Playing it portable on Switch gave me gameboy memories. I’m glad to hear people are getting a feel for the combat timing windows.
I am not getting a feel for the combat timing windows, specifically with defense and rarely used spells like heal. Gilda was especially obnoxious as her attacks were fast but, like all attacks, varied in their timing. I did beat her but it took a few tries.
I’m going to try installing it on Steam Deck tonight cause it seems like the perfect way to play it. The widescreen support for this game looks awful hahaha.
I remember that fight being tough and taking me a number of tries too. I feel like I got a number of attack timing windows pretty consistent but there was always a few I’d struggle with a lot.
Made it to Chapter 2 in Ikenfell and defeated the Adorable Kitten, but I think I might shelve it here. The generic story and characters aren’t capturing my interest at all, and battles feel much too slow and repetitive for a game that’s like 80% combat.
Everything you and the enemy do in fights takes too long to execute, and there’s multiple rounds of drudgery at the start where the best move is to immediately end your turn so the enemy wastes theirs approaching you. It’s just not working for me, which is a shame since the prospect of a super queer RPG was initially so exciting.
