Alright, the poll is up! You’re allotted two votes. I’ll announce the winners late Thursday/early Friday so we can start playing this weekend.

  • Venba (PS5, Xbox One/Series X|S, Switch, PC)
  • Overcooked! (PS4/PS5, Xbox One/Series X|S, Switch, PC)
  • Dave the Diver (PS4/PS5, Switch, PC, Mac)
  • Cooking Companions (PC, Mac, Linux)
  • Yum Yum Cookstar (PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC)
0 voters

I took a look at this but couldn’t vote.
Dave the Diver was the only one I played and it honestly didn’t impress me enough to make me give it a blind vote.

The vote is for one that we all play, weather we have or not. Its to experience a new game, not which is best or would we recommend

We nearly had a tie but the official winner is…

Venba is a single player narrative cooking game developed and published by Visai Games. It released on July 31, 2023 and has won multiple awards including Best Debut and Social Impact. It is estimated to be around two hours long to fully complete. Since this is a teeny tiny game, feel free to play and discuss any of the other titles we voted on this month.

I just finished Venba tonight. I meant to play it this last Sunday but right when I was going to, my downstairs neighbor got swatted. I ended up calling out of work today due to feelings of stress and thought it would be good to have some quiet gaming time to myself.

Many facets of Venba are comforting, The music, the food, the warm colors. The love Paavalan and Venba have for each other, their culture, and their son. Reminiscent of real life though, there is a lot of pain, and it really stings. Watching Kavin grow farther apart from his parents, rejecting his Indian culture and his parents, was heartbreaking. The ending is bittersweet but I can’t help but mourn for the lost time, the moments that could have been.
I really enjoyed this game and it’s easy to see why it was nominated and won awards.

I find it very amusing that the Steam Cooking Fest is going on at the same time we all decided to play Venba.

I finally got around to playing Venba! It was very short but felt perfectly paced to tell the story it wanted to. The writers do a great job of just feeding you (hehe) enough info and then moving on so that you can figure the details out for yourself. I never felt like it was beating me over the head with the points it was trying to make. It’s kind of perfect in that regard. It certainly packs an emotional punch and I love how it also features a little cookbook on the main menu if you want to try cooking some of the dishes from the game.

Some of the mouse controls that involved rotating and dragging were a bit finicky for me, but never in a way that detracted significantly from the experience. I also had a few moments where the game didn’t do a great job of making it clear I was meant to interact with certain objects so I’d just end up moving my mouse around the screen for a while till something highlighted.

Great game though, definitely recommended!

I actually dropped a star for this because I don’t think I figured it out until the last recipe, which could be all on me and not the game, but I felt it wasn’t explained very well. I kept thinking it just wasn’t reading my mouse input until I finally did it correctly at the end.

I would like to try some of the recipes. If I ever do, I’ll make sure to post photos here and/or on the main site.

What should our next theme be? I’m coming up blank what would be fun to play during the holidays.
