A heads up about Knight in the Woods, aspects of it are cozy on the surface but it’s a pretty heavy game in several ways.

I don’t mind that. If anything, it makes me want to play it even more. :)) Especially after SH2.

Speaking of SH2.

The abstract daddy boss room being lined with pistons was probably the most disturbing visual metaphor in the game (for me). I’m not sure if disturbing is the right word but my gut twisted a bit seeing it and the visuals of them lived in my head for awhile. One of my friends watching me play had no idea why they were there so I had to explain it to them.

What I expect the next round of games to look like when the theme is “cozy horror”:

Those two are relationship goals XD.
Theyre like a canon confirmed couple (at least jokingly) by the devs of the two games. Its super amusing

We only had a few suggestions so I’m gonna limit this poll to a single vote. All of the games here are pretty short so if we finish the winner super early, we can always play the rest. Thinking of closing this poll later tonight or tomorrow morning so get your votes in quick!

  • Beacon Pines
  • Luigi’s Mansion
  • Night in the Woods

Announcing this a little late. Sorry about that. I may have forgot while running errands today. :upside_down_face:

Anywho, the official winner is Beacon Pines!

Developed by Hiding Spot Games and published by Fellow Traveler, this 2022 indie title is a storybook-based exploration game. It is available to play on PC, Switch, and Xbox One. It takes about 6.5 hours to 100% the game.

If we blast through this game, maybe we can consider playing the other suggestions though I assume many of you are probably busy with the Silent Hill 2 Remake haha.

I already had a copy sitting in my Steam library that I had yet to get to so this works out well! I’m excited for this one.

I played Beacon Pines in one sitting and it is cute, has emotion, a bit of horror and is soooo well made! It touches on themes of loss and grief in a good way.

I missed one achievement, so I had to look it up, but no moon logic or backtracking or getting stuck - just a well told story that kept me engaged the whole time and had me progressing at a nice pace, while still having time to look at the flowers and kick a melon.

There’s nothing I’d want to change, and I have nothing to complain about. The game knows what it wants to be and achieves its goals flawlessly and with a huge heart. The art is beautiful, the characters are adorable, and there is a bit of LGBTQIA+ too.

The humour is also nicely spread out and made me laugh out loud or chuckle several times. A few nice references here and there as well.

Thank you all so much for pointing this out to me! <3 Thanks also to all the backers on Kickstarter for making this game possible.

Glad you enjoyed it. Its such a fantastic little title and i hope they make something else that either brings back the characters or evokes a similiar feel.

Whose your favorite character? I like Dawn the bat alot, and Beck is pretty relatable

My favorite character is the aligator (?) woman at the well who reads this book that suspiciously seems to follow the same kind of story and she does absolutely never anything else. She doesn’t even go home? I sometimes feel like her, sitting in my corner of the world, reading and playing games while around me the fate of said world is decided and I haven’t had any clue or saying in it, but I am having fun. Or the guy who’s life is insects and beetles and ONLY insects and beetles… there are so many lovely side characters that just add to the vibe of this small town … junk guy and how he saw a business opportunity and took it at the end.

Also when the narrator broke down because she definitely wasn’t liking the endings that I was producing - I laughed out loud.

I will remember all of them for some time!

I just finished my playthrough!

It took me a few sittings because I feel as though the story wasn’t quite grabbing me. There’s a great moment fairly early on, when Luka gets grabbed by someone in a hazmat suit that got me excited for what was to come but I don’t think the game ever reached a high point like that again for me.

I think I might have preferred the game more as a straight visual novel because being able to walk around didn’t really add much to the experience and also broke up story with walking from point A to point B. It does let you appreciate the town, which is nice, but exploration didn’t feel all that rewarding.

I enjoyed the characters enough but I wasn’t a huge fan of the turning points mechanic. In theory it’s cool that the charms you discover can give you a bit of a say over what choices Luka makes but many of the paths quickly become dead ends and you can only choose from a small group of the many charms you’ve found at any turning point. The story also doesn’t really try to account for information you know as a player, having accessed multiple split timelines, but characters shouldn’t know, which leaves certain reveals feeling a bit hollow. I also feel like many plot threads aren’t followed up on or don’t receive satisfying conclusions.

That said, it’s an adorable little game and possibly the best embodiment of the “cozy” genre I’ve played so it’s got that going for it. The presentation is lovely and I had no technical issues.

I’m a bit late to starting the game but I am cozy in bed with the Steam Deck and just finished Chapter 1.

I love so much already. The sound of the rainstorm during the introduction, the narrator, the character portrait art, Luka’s outfits, Granny (her character design is incredible), the small town vibes. I’ll keep playing tonight until either life or bedtime stops me. I want to get past Chapter 1 as I’ve already played the introduction before so I’m officially at unknown territory now.

I finished Chapter Two!

The humor in this game is very fun. I especially enjoyed being a little shit. Also the first tragic ending being the murder of a child was surprising. Normally violence against children isn’t really depicted in games. One of those taboo topics. I am also glad the dumpster body didn’t turn out to be Luka’s mom. He doesn’t need to lose both his parents. :((

I want to play more but if I don’t stop now I won’t get any sleep.

I finished Chapter Three!

Our dear Rolo is missing. Is Luka cursed with losing everyone he loves?
My partner overheard the beeping walkie talkie in Luka’s bedroom and asked “Morse Code?”
I said “I don’t know. It sounds like it is. Can you tell what it’s saying?”
He said “Hmmm. It sounds like there’s an S in there but it doesn’t sound like SOS.” His curiosity overtook him and he looked it up. “Okay, do you want to know what it is?”
“Mmm I don’t know. Is it a spoiler?”
“It could be. It’s one word.”
“Mmmmmmmm no, I’ll wait.”
So can anyone tell me if it’s a spoiler or not at this point in the game??

If it is only one word it is probably one of two that you would need to make anything out of it and even then it would only become clear later on what the full meaning was. I also thought it was morse code, but Luka seeemed not to realize it so I didn’t try to decipher it.

You will be told what the message was trying to say later on and it is maybe better not to know, but again one word will not be enough, just making your brain rotate. :woman_shrugging:

I’m much farther now. I’ve been playing it every night but I can’t keep track of which iteration of which chapter I’m in so I’ll be back once I’ve finished it (hopefully tonight).

I just beat it. What a wonderful game.

I’m tired so just cut and dry thoughts today. The Narrator’s acting ability is superb. The ending is bittersweet. His mom is forever aged and so Luka won’t get as much time with his mom before she passes. Rolo missed several years of his life as well. When the credits were rolling and it was playing the song Luka hums in Old Beacon Pines, I remembered that scene and how his mom was stopped in her tracks by it, because that’s what she would hum to him, before we or Luka knew that was his mom. Recalling that almost made me cry. :sob:
