I switched Vampires Dawn: Reign of Blood for Venba to cross with the diverse experiences challenge. As a Canadian living abroad, I’m excited to check out this story of my mom’s homeland.

!!! What did YOU think of Bird Alone??
I think it’s a pretty fascinating app, and compelling way to deal with its subject matter. It’s heartbreaking but also comforting. The mix of emotions it gives me feels very real, very much a reflection of the complexity of grief. The weird happiness mixed with a deep sense of pain. I suppose it’s tapping into feelings I’ve gone through before, and in that sense it feels correct in a sense. I appreciate that you brought this to the group, I don’t think I’d heard of it from anyone else.
One of the complexities that came along w/ it was that it was released during the pandemic, and people were not expecting the “ending.” And lots of folks, me included, were VERY upset by it. Check out the app store’s reviews! And Batchelor didn’t want to change anything, although apparently relented at some point. The store descriptions and game experience is very different than how it started.
I quite appreciate art that confronts people with difficult emotions and events, but I can understand that it can be too upsetting for some.
Are you implying that the game is different now from what it was at release?
The reviews seem quite glowing. Was that not the case at release?
A lot of the language about what the game is was changed over the past year or so. I remember stuff like track your mood with your pal, it was like “hey come play fun games with a parrot! Be friends!” and it seemed much more like a pet sim than the experience it is. I think it’s much deeper. When I found out the bird dies, I looked at the reviews. While reviews have always generally been well-rated, there was A LOT of review after review like “I’m crushed,” “how could you do this to me?” “why now??” “I wasn’t expecting this and I’m devasted.” and so on. People were very hurt and lots felt blindsided by it not being like a forever pet. I think the pandemic caused many players to grow very attached.
Sorry I’m not sure I addressed this, not the game as much as the marketing and store pages.
I can understand that. I think there can be a lot of value in media that provokes feelings like that, including works that take you down an unexpected path and I don’t think it’s intrinsically negative to be upset by a work, but I can appreciate that it might have been hard on some people.
I’ll note, I saw a lot of reviews that expressed sadness over the outcome and similar things to what you posted above, but that were also rated at five stars. So I’m assuming that at least some of the people who felt crushed also felt they took something worthwhile away from the work. For me, the most impactful work is work that elicits a deep affective response from me, and some of the things I love most were things that significantly upset me.
Its like Frog Fractions but with a bird and the grim reaper lol
no…
…
Im unsure if that bothered you or you didnt understand the joke i was attempting, but i apologize.
