Favourite Movie of 2024 (So Far)

It’s Strickland’s surreal absurdist take on Giallo, to a degree. It’s strange and fun and can get really absurd, which is to be expected for a film about a killer piece of clothing. I also think it’s gorgeously shot and has a fantastic soundscape. The soundtrack by Cavern of Antimatter is superb, and one of my favourite albums of theirs. All in all it was just such an impactful experience that it sticks with me.

Don’t worry, I was joking. I don’t know how many of my other posts here and on the main site you’ve seen, but I tend to throw sarcasm around a lot. Sorry, I should have thrown an emoji in to make it clearer, but the “hate speech” and “50/50” comments were totally sarcastic.

Part 2 wasn’t as good as the first, in my opinion, mostly because it felt a lot more trite. Especially the finale. I won’t give it away but as soon as it started, I thought Yeah, okay, I’ve seen this particular scene 19 times before in 19 different action movies. But even throughout the movie, I kept feeling like I seen this all before. Maybe I was expecting something more profound because of Villeneuve?

Also, I’m born in the US but my mom’s family is all French-Canadian and I do absolutely love that a French-Canadian is known for giving the world something other than hockey, so I will never hate on him.

Have you watched any of Morgan’s shorts? If you can find it, watch Bobby Yeah before Stopmotion .

Well, I’d have to break my movie watching rule to do so but if I do get around to Stopmotion, I will make sure to watch Bobby Yeah first.

Appreciated. And no, I’m not really familiar with many people here, to be honest. I think I agreed with something you said once, and I’ve interacted with BMO a bunch of times before.

This may be it. Dune’s shot well and all. I know Dune is Villeneuve’s passion project but I can’t wait until he gets off of it. Blade Runner 2049, Sicario, Arrival, Prisoners, Polytechnique, Incendies… all better movies. In the interest of fairness to Villeneuve, though, and I guess in slight disagreement with you, the last, I dunno, 30 minutes of Dune 2 was the only time when I was a little emotionally invested, but I still see what you’re saying.

What rule is that?

Basically just that I either watch movies from current year or things pre-2000. Its because a) I want to focus on movies that qualify for the Movie Awards and b) because ive seen so many 2000s movies that when i watch something old i want it to be older.

And yes, im aware its a little silly, but its my rule dammit.

That’s fair. FYI, Bobby Yeah is a short film. I don’t know if that influences your decision at all.

For a film I haven’t seen mentioned here, I quite enjoyed seeing the Spy x Family movie in theaters earlier this year. If you’re a fan of the anime or manga, it’s just a fun and amusing side story that’s worth the watch. The audience I was with had a great time.

I enjoyed Dune Part 2 (and am currently reading Dune Messiah, since I’m curious to see what happens next). For me it wasn’t quite the masterpiece I’ve seen most other people call it, but it was a fantastic experience with an Imax screen (and more significantly, Imax sound). That sandworm-riding scene, and that scene with them taking down the spice-mining vehicle, were incredibly intense.

I also saw Furiosa in theaters. I just found it all right, a solid enough prequel to an extremely fantastic action movie (Fury Road is perhaps as high a bar as it gets). I kinda left it feeling like this one would’ve worked better as a mini-series, since the film was broken up into “episodes” anyways. I also felt meh about the villain.

Not sure what else I’ll see in theaters this year. I like Beetlejuice, but don’t have a strong desire to see its sequel. I also liked Joker well enough, but think I’ll wait on that sequel as well. I am pretty curious about three Christmastime films: the Lord of the Rings anime prequel, the Noseferatu remake, and Sonic 3. Hoping for good things from each of those!

Oh yeah, that’s the only reason I even agreed to do it, haha.

Thanks for responding! I’ve only heard of Spy x Family and I’m not familiar with the source material at all.

As for the other stuff, since I already commented on some of it, I will say that I’ll watch Beetlejuice but I don’t have a strong connection with the first one. Joker 2 is going to be hit or miss for me, I imagine. The Sonic movies have been surprisingly great so I’m all in for the third and I always forget that it’s coming out. I have high hopes for Nosferatu but those hopes are running contrary to how I feel about the director’s other works. I always dig how a Robert Eggers movie looks but none of his movies have really connected with me that much. I don’t like Lord of the Rings but I’m happy for the people who do.

I had a quick look at this list on IMDB about films that are still to release this year, and the ones I’m keen for are

  • Sonic 3 (obvs)
  • Beetlejuice Beetlejuice
  • Smile 2
  • The Platform 2
  • Clue, but kind of morbidly curious. The original film with Tim Curry is brilliant. I doubt this one will be anywhere near as good.
  • Gladiator 2. Again, morbidly curious

And that’s it. Really nothing else peaks my interest.

Oh man, Smile was so good. I really enjoyed that one. I hope 2 ends up being just as good at minimum

Didn’t even know there was going to be a Clue remake. x__x Not surprised, of course… How many classic 80s films are left to bring back at this point, I wonder.

Not trolling, I’m seriously wondering for the people who liked Frozen Empire - why?

Because it was a fun, humours film that moved the story of the characters along and did stuff that none of the other Ghostbusters filmes have tried, and it actually worked.

Back to the Future is one, but Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale both activleey work to stop any such remakes/ reboots. Long may it continue.

But yeah, there are plenty of films that could be remade, regardless of if they should.

I literally just saw a thing about an “insider” claiming a Goonies Reboot got greenlit and is expected late 2026 to summer 2027. If thats true… im not enthusiastic even a little.

Alien romulus, although at half it got lazy and i got bored. Hated how they went safe and copied scenes from Alien and Aliens. What a shame. Also, the actors, they could’ve went with a better cast.

Krull, definitely. Has there already been a Toxic Avenger remake?

Hereditary is one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen, and it boggles my mind that it’s as revered as it is, Midsommar too. Ari Aster is a goddamn blight on cinema. Only decent things to be said is how well shot they are.

The Witch is very cool in terms of its dedication to how it was made - how all the dialogue is realistic, most of it taken from actual Salem witch trials, plus all the clothing be time period appropriate, lighting the same, etc - but I totally understand people NOT liking it. It’s slow and it’s just not that interesting, especially to people who haven’t worked in film like I have lol

The Lobster is an AMAZING premise that’s great for like 40 minutes maybe until he leaves the resort and then the whole goddamn thing falls apart. A tragedy, honestly. One of my biggest disappointments in the last decade.

Florida Project hit a little too close to home for me what with my drug addled father and stuff, and my intense desire to return to childhood but in a positive way, but I agree it’s not great and it’s really hard to watch.

and finally The Green Knight. I just love David Lowery, that’s all I can say. A Ghost Story is perhaps my favorite film of all time and that’s just an hour and a half of a dude under a sheet passing through time. Green Knight, however, did fail to tell me what kind of movie it was upfront. I expected something with a bit of action, not something as philosophical and introspective as it wound up being. However, beautifully produced, and the ending is maybe one of my favorites in recent cinema. But, like The Witch, I COMPLETELY get why people don’t like it, and it’d be a hard rewatch even for me just because of the pacing.

There actually is a Toxic Avenger remake, starring Peter Dinklege as the Avenger himself! Unfortunately, nobody seems to want to release it, despite it getting really good reviews from those who saw it. I am hyped for it to eventually find somewhere to drop though, I’m sure it’ll be amazing!
