Thanks. I am UTC -6 so scheduling would be interesting. I will keep all in the loop, but I do hope it can work out soon for you 3 regardless of whether I can join. I have been following the saga of this thread, and it has been a suspenseful, sad, and hopeful journey the past couple of months.
UTC+ 1/2 vs. UTC -5/-6, so we are on opposite sides of the ball? As someone who was born in a time when we didn’t even have landlines at home and couldn’t call family two towns over, I’m amazed that I can now keep in touch with people all over the world.
I would love it if we could make it work. A BG3 session that spans the globe between us would be very special!
I can’t speak for everyone’s schedules and work expectations but I would think that we might be able to make it work one day a week on weekends. I don’t mind staying up or getting up early to accommodate.
Good news! I got the job. This gives me some flexibility to recover from a late night or early morning to make the time zones work.
Congrats on getting the job!
With no rush on the answer, which days/nights of the week do you think work for you? I’ll pose the same question to @Nelemania and @El_Diegote, and we can discuss a potential target for sessions.
Great you got the job!
I wish you a good start into the job adventure at your new position/company!
I will never be able to do anything on Sunday evenings (starting at 6 pm) and on Mondays. Everything else should be doable.
If we do not get a time that is easy on everyone, we could have two different ones and change from week to week, like one week the UTC+ 1/2 has to suffer a bit and the other week it’s the UTC -5/-6?
To start, I can definitly make early Saturday and Sunday mornings in my time zone work. I could also do late Friday or Saturday here. I’m open to other ideas and can be flexible where possible.
Do people have a preferred chat app? I can do Discord, Whatsapp, Skype (if that’s still a thing), etc…
A few additional things to start thinking about but that doesn’t need to be determined until we start:
Preferred class: I know we floated this earlier but we eventually we’ll land on a group composition
Basic decisions around game mechanics and minor rules around things like save scumming, spoilers, and anything anyone else wants to set ground rules about.
Difficulty: Larian just dropped a custom mode that lets us adjust a number of settings to tailor the experience. Or we can go with one of the base difficulties, Explorer, Balanced and Tactician. I’m ignoring Honour mode because I think our casual group doesn’t need the looming threat of permadeath.
Party leader: I don’t know if we need one, but I do want to say that I shouldn’t be leading us because I’m afraid of depriving people of a full experience if I fall into automatic mode. I’d like people to have the full experience of exploring without expectations so if we need someone to take point I’m happy to defer that role to one of you.
I can do all these too, but I barely ever use them, so I should know a bit upfront to get used to it again. I have no preference. If we will use the microfone I need to test that, I used mine the last time about three years ago.
My prefered class is hunter, but I am fine with everything not mostly melee. I love to heal too, everything that can heal would be second best. I still wait for a game where you can play a healing-hunter that throws puppies or baby cats at people to heal them. ![]()
For the other questions, my ideas:
For save scumming: I would say if we have a bad outcome because we made a terrible mistake in a fight/had a misunderstanding between us… or did not know something and stumble into a stupid situation (went into a fight with poison enemies without a way to heal poison for example), reloading would be fine for me. If we make a story decision that turns out bad - that’s the story of our run and I would go with it no matter what.
I would start with Balanced and see how it works out.
No party leader, democracy all the way and if it is 2 vs 2 we roll a dice, because DnD. (If I lead we will open every chest and talk to every animal, do inventory management and try out new looks and armor for hours and we keep all the potions for later because reasons… not fun for a group.)
I don’t know about spoilers. Maybe not for story but I don’t mind it for a difficult fight to know a bit about it before hand.
I take for granted that if we wipe, we reload the save before the fight.
Lol, you’re going to make me pull out a real D20 for party decision rolls? I love it.
I think I mostly just mean I’d like you three to take point more often because I have formed feeling about the direction I’ll now head in most runs. I want the group to have a chance to explore and I don’t want my knowledge of anything to interfere with that.
Makes sense to me.
I have played the very early stages of the game on my own and with a group that did not work out, but have little exposure to it outside of those sessions, so I would prefer playing at the default difficulty level and having someone more familiar be a de-facto party leader if only for helping explain mechanics I might not catch my first time around. I have played a little bit of 5e but I expect to be on the slower end of decision making in battles to start.
I think we just save very frequently, especially if we expect a battle coming up. I don’t see anything wrong with save scumming given the logistical difficulty that will go into keeping a game going across the world.
I am happy to play whatever class helps balance out the party. I have typically chosen magic based classes, so I am happy to switch to melee or physical focused to try something new.
I have Discord, Microsoft Teams, or can download Skype for communication.
Late Friday, Early Saturday, or Late Saturday in my time zone would be ideal for me. The only scheduling conflict on those days would be once every 5-6 weeks I volunteer at my church so late Saturday may make it difficult to be on time Sunday morning. With a little bit of notice, I can make late Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday work as well.
We can stick to Balanced. I don’t recommend Tactician for a first run, and Explorer may be too easy to be fun for the group. And we can change difficulty if we ever feel we need to adjust.
Unless there are objections, I am happy to take on that role. I don’t plan to spoil anything, but I’m happy to explain mechanics as we play. My 5e experience is limited, but my BG3 experience is pretty thorough and the latter might be more useful since BG3 has its own slight variations of some 5e rules.
I’m fine with that. I floated the save scumming topic because I know some people save scum every decision and outcome, which I’d advise we avoid.
Having played a few times, I don’t have a preference for my class. I’d like people to pick their favourite class, and we roll with it. If there is an obvious gap, I’ll fill it by rolling a class that might be appropriate. @Nelmania indicated a desire to be a ranger, you’re welcome to roll a magic user and I think we’ll still have flexibility for whatever @El_Diegote wants to roll. I’ll pick to compliment.
Wow it’s great to have the Grovee community committed to arranging multiplayer sessions for this game.
Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone had a restful holiday season.
Bumping this thread to assess if the group wants to start talking about session planning.
My complete apologies, I have disappeared for way too long. I know I’ll have more certainty about this by the end of next month, when everything settles a bit in my side of the screen. Unless the game actually started/died and I’m just sitting on the pavement
No worries. We have lots of reasons to take our time. Take all the time you need and when a time comes that we all feel ready we’ll make it happen.
Thanks! In any case, most of my rigid deadlines are for the end of march so I’ll definitely be able to fit a few things into my schedule after that.
