A Forum to Post YouTube Videos that are Good

Admittedly I didn’t watched the video (three hours is a bit too much of a demand on my time ATM ) but here in the UK Americans claiming they are Scottish or Irish (or Welsh or British for that matter) are scorned and the butt of many a joke.

It seems to come from
A. The vast majority have extremely tenuous links to the country
B. Those links, if they do exist, were literal generations ago. This would be fine if…
C. They intended to explore said links in any way that’s deeper than “I drank a Guinness.”

From what I am gather after 10 years of living in the UK is that there is a huge amount of resentment towards Americans (and I’m talking in generalities here) as they appear to force their culture on the world via their movies, TV shows, and other media only to then come to a relatively small country and try to claim that county’s culture as their own without even really understanding it or it’s history.

Scotland and Ireland are very proud countries. Both have fought damn hard for their identity, arguably more than America has had to historically, and there are families who date back to the Troubles and the potato famin and even earlier. Their culture, stories, beliefs existed long before colonial America was even established.

Personally, I can understand the resentment. They feel their culture is being co-opted for the sake of clout or a hashtag. There’s no true love or understanding of the Scottish/ Irish/Welsh etc culture from many of the Americans who claim to be so (note I said “most”). Claiming a culture as your own when you don’t really understand it and don’t live in the country is somewhat offensive.

It should be noted that it’s not exclusively Americans who do this, but they certainly are the largest and loudest group.

As an aside, England has a chain of pubs called “Outback” that are supposed to be Australian themed. I went to one once and the most Australian thing about it was you could order Vegemite on toast. All they had done was thrown a surfboard and a few Fosters signs (hardly anyone in Australia drinks Fosters) on the wall and called it a day. My wife and I had one drink and then I told her I wanted to leave as a staff member cosplaying Steve Irwin came out carrying an inflatable crocodile. It was pretty offensive.

I highly recommend this video especially to you, because I think you would find it good too. You can watch in short bursts. It has chapters. It goes far, far beyond the trope of Americans thinking they are insert European country of your choice because grand-grand-grand-grand-person even when it starts out like that. It is way more about what “being Irish” is or isn’t and why it is so complicated and so twisted inside the country by the Irish as much as from Irish diaspora and everyone else. How it is shaped by history and financial interest, racism and political agendas from the early 1800s to todays politics.

I really, really wish you (and everyone) would take a look. It is such a deep dive into Irish history and history of the Irish-Americans and today Ireland.

I felt it was worth my time, even when at times she was speaking a bit too fast for my translation skills.

I shall do my best to give it a full watch

That’s it, I’m done with the internet. This will never be topped.

I agree that when this bubble pops it will be average people paying the price. But AI porn will save the bubble for a while now as it is the next iteration of this. At least I think that one can actually make some money - just some not enough of course, because it will never be enough.

This is brilliant/ hilarious.

TBH though, I feel the representation of my fellow left-handed people in gaming is sorely lacking.

What I find especially funny is their slogan “go woke-go broke” when you look at this list of games and how successful most of the ones mentioned in this video are. If a game fails it also never can be because it has a lot of issues, it has to be because one of the protagonists goes by the “wrong” pronouns etc.

It is a bit of an older one and I was surprised to agree with the speaker in this video so much, but I think it is worth watching:

Here is the full, unedited speech from Reagan’s 1987 radio address.

Trump raised the tariffs on Canada by 10% because he is annoyed that Ontario made an ad referencing this.

I know, I thought it is more fun to not mention T and just act like it is a random good video I stumbled upon, but I did “research” because I wanted to know what Reagan (a politician the GOP usually praises) actually said, since the ad is an excerpt.

This is kind of a Halloween video, because of the horror not having ANY privacy in the US. This dwarves the discussion abot age verification - no it puts it into the size of an ant vs. a whale.

I stumbled upon this because some German politicians at he moment are dreaming of AI cameras in German cities and I wanted to see what the technology is capable of.

Totally forgot about this until it popped up in my feed. Can’t decide if it’s hilarious or stupid.

This could only come from the inspired mind of a gaming exec.

They tried something like this with game developers in 2014:

The Game_Jam reality show

  • Original concept: To film a game jam with indie developers and YouTubers, document the process, and have the audience watch them create games.
  • Shift in format: The project quickly changed from a documentary into a reality show with a large budget, including branded challenges and prizes from Mountain Dew.
  • Conflict and collapse: The production crumbled on the first day after several developers walked out due to the show’s focus on drama and manipulation, which misrepresented the nature of game jams

More specifically: They tried to rile up the male developer teams against the female ones (one of the developers being Zoe Quinn) because they thought that would be the spice the gamer ™ audience wanted and the teams (all of them) went “nah, not with us” and left the project. It was a really expensive failure and rightfully so.

More in detail:

Rami Ismail’s take on it:

There was a certain tone in the contract that tells you that whoever agreed to send this contract to the developers is completely oblivious to game jams and lacks any respect towards the participant. It also tells you that the organizers did not expect GAME_JAM to yield enough “drama”, and that they felt the need to be able to inject drama into it. Game_Jam

They had asked TotalBiscuit to be the host of this and he turned it down because he found it to be “fishy” from the beginning. There was a great Co-optional podcast with him about this later, but Polaris owned the older episodes and took them all down, so I can’t find it.

Warning, this is not a mealtime video but a history lessen, a lesson about asian philosophies and cultures and includes a plane accident all just deep enough (selfaware to only be able to go toe deep if even that) to make my head spin for a while so it will take me a while to be able to watch the second part of this. I again realized that I learned zero about Asian countries in school and that I am not much more informed today. The sprinkled in humor&sarcasm hits just right too.

I will definitive watch the second one. Since I am absolutely uninformed about anything this touches on, including the gaming aspect, I can’t say if this has mistakes in it. All I can sayis that I was glued to the screen from start to finish.

Not YouTube, but it’s always worth hearing what Philomena Cunk has to say.

The second video was even better. Well spent time for me and again my head spins. I also feel extremely bad about my Samsung phone.

This also mentions Genshin Impact in a way I did not expect.

It is hard to recommend these two videos because its a lot to take in and they are long, but still … I wish a lot of people will watch them.

I also feel that what we see in South Korea is where the rest of the world is heading too and the pressure is building up on young people everywhere the same and the difference is just in the name of the supercorporation that takes over politics and life.

Games and gamers™ are highly political, they can be in a good or in a bad way. A power that should not be spent for nothing but directed where it needs to be directed to.
