Video Game Preservation

I know there are several people on the site interested in game preservation, so I thought it might be interesting/ fun to have a topic discussing the issue.

I just read THIS which suggests SEGA had UK police “recover” 3/DS Dev kits from a second market seller who had come into possession of them legally. It also included early builds of several SEGA 3/DS games.

I can understand in a way why SEGA would want them back, but based on the article they got rid of them at some point so I don’t understand why the police could just take them. Also, what use would they be now?

All the games were (I think) released commercially at some point so these early builds would only be of interest to a niche group, but it would help to understand how games were developed for the system.

I’m kind of surprised SEGA did this, but it’s a stance they seem to be taking more and more of late.
