Twitter ban?

A bunch of reddit communities, I including r/Nintendo, r/pcgaming and many others have banned or are thinking of banning links to Twitter due to being essentially an alt-right if not outright Nazi sofial network (Reddit Forums Ban X Links Over Musk’s Controversial Salute).

I don’t know it grovee adopting a similar policy would do much, but I think we might want to at least think about it. Twitter is not only a cesspool, but it’s also nigh inaccesible without an account, so links to there are also mostly useless.

I also don’t know how such a ban would be enforced other than moderation, which might increase moderation burden.

On the other hand, is not as if we are inundated with Twitter links, so it might not be such a huge change.

At the very least, it might be good to delete the grovee Twitter account and remove the link in the footer.

I second this stance.

BlueSky is a pretty great alternative. Many figureheads and companies are beginning to use it instead of Twitter. I think it’s only a matter of time before the big three (Nintendo, Xbox, and Sony) begin using it for their own announcements.

I’ll tag @Peter so he can take it under advisement.

I’m all for less Twitter in the world. Aiming to never use Amazon, Kindle, or Audible again either. There are alternatives for all these things.

Yes. This is why I stopped using Goodreads and started using StoryGraph. Been trying to avoid Amazon and their products as much as possible for years now.

Second this. I’ve been on BkueSky for a bit now and it is SO much nicer than The Cesspool. It even has an option to only see posts by those you actively follow, which is awesome! I hope something equally as awesome comes along for Instagram.

I’m a bit of a weirdo in that I refuse to stream music so I’ve never used Spotify (apart from an initial checking out which I quickly ditched) or Amazon Music. Actually, I’m rather proud to say I’ve not used Amazon for six years.

Yes, the less Twittler the better, not that is something I see here often! I wanted to post something about him and his POE 2 scam and then thought: “Nah, not to mention him is more hurtful to him and better for everyone’s sanity.”

Audible only gets used when they offer it for free to me or my mother, which they do at least once a year for up to three month. I always feel it is like stealing from them and I make sure to cancel just before they can draw money (these books can easily be “freed” from Audible too). Same for Prime. I take the games and the free Twitch subscription to a nice left leaning streamer and cancel before it costs any money.

Spotify is a “family” thing that I profit from for free. Friends use it and they are unwilling to cancel it so they have a free spot for me and that’s what I use. If it ever costs me something I am out (my library has a lot of music for free) and I already told them not to keep it because of me. I never use Amazon video or music or their free e-books - I am already overwhelmed with media.

I am out of Goodreads for a while now (3 years probably) and haven’t checked for something new, maybe I have a look at StoryGraph in the future. I really would like to have a place like Grouvee to sort my library of e-books and audio books with.

I might have to take a look at Blue Sky and if it is just to raise their numbers even if I do fine without more social media. I went from Reddit to Lemmy and then stopped using that as well because its better for my mental health. :woman_shrugging:

I knew my not ever using social media wouldnt bite me in the butt one day! Lol.

I get my social medias off grouvee…and i guess discord sorta counts. And on very rare occasions ill use favebook market to sell like furniture we replaced, cause itll always sell in like a day or 2. But i discovered a good while back that most social media is bad for my mental health so i just dont mess with it.

As someone who has used Twitter 12 times for work-related activities in his entire life, I’m fine with banning it!!! Also, on board with just never mentioning the name of people who thrive on negative crud attention and have made a career of spreading divisiveness. I do not mind talking politics but I don’t relish feeding professional trolls who profit off of fomenting hate.

Wise and very self aware.

Twitter could disappear off the face of the earth for all I care! I don’t know if such a thing is really enforceable on this site, but I personally never use it anyway.

I don’t think we can logistically block someone from posting a URL, nor block people posting screenshots from Twitter. But we can, and will moderate content that is a violation of the TOS, so if a Tweet is hurtful, bigoted or discriminatory, we can take action.
