I got a lot of thoughts and feelings about the new Magic set that is entirely based around the mainline Final Fantasy games.
I’ve been an on and off Magic player/fan, and a pretty casual Final Fantasy fan for most of my life and I’m curious to other perspectives on this crossover as well.
So please feel free to express any thoughts on this new set here whether it be highs, lows, plans for decks, specific cards, you name it.
I’m not a fan of Universes Beyond sets in general and I especially don’t think they should be printed for anything other than Commander/eternal formats, but at least Final Fantasy largely fits the feel of the world of Magic.
I looked through all the cards for fun. I haven’t played MtG in about 30 years so I don’t really know what’s going on any more, but there are a lot of pretty cards.
So it seems like the order of number of cards is 14, then 7, 6, the other PSX titles, then everything else? Which is too bad, it feels like they could have done a creature card for every named playable character, at least. And they should have included Tactics!
Someone here or the main site or Discord mentioned no Faris, and while there’s no Faris card specifically, she does appear on a card!
No hate towards FF fans, but one of the reasons - besides cost - I stopped playing Magic was that I really don’t like the idea of these types of set. Even things I’m a big fan of, like Doctor Who, I’m not interested in. Magic already has its own amazing world and lore, why do they need to add other stuff?
That lines up with what I’ve been seeing too. They went hard on 14 and 7, and we got some 6 and some 8 and 9, then even smaller amounts of older game inclusion.
They tried to give nods to characters like Faris with card art instead of full cards, but it’s still criminal that they gave us multiple versions of many characters and then zero cards for these other characters. Also upsetting when a character does get included but with weird art and/or weak flavor for their abilities.
I certainly don’t disagree. It seems to be an increasingly common grumbling from long term MTG fans all the while sales are still really strong regardless.
A lot of the new sets would have been a lot more interesting in every possible way as a block of sets instead of a stand alone, and potentially a lot of problems would be solved if they just reverted back to doing a couple blocks a year.
They did a similar thing with Doctor Who. It was all David Tennant and Billie Piper. I think the only spercificlly Classic Series card they did was Tom Baker. No Omaga, no William Hartnell or Jon Pertwee or Master. Kind of insulting IMO.
This definitely isn’t true. The set is filled with references to much older episodes and every doctor got a card. The Third Doctor There are also 4 different Master cards.
