First of all, I’m testing how to use polls on this forum since it’s brand new. Second of all, it’s my favorite question that gets asked on the Internet because there is no good answer, but everyone has an opinion.
I’m only including mainline, non-MMO games and their sequels. So Tactics, XI, XIV, Mystic Quest, etc. aren’t included.
I think that VI is objectively the best, but VIII was my first and therefore my most cherished. Plus, I don’t think VIII gets enough recognition for how insane it is. There’s a sequence where you fight dinosaur aliens on a derelict spaceship designed to look like a dragon, which sounds like a scenario designed by splicing together the coolest things an 8-year-old can think of.
Has to be the original. There’s something special about going around what was then a new world filled with adventure and a surprisingly rich story considering it’s time. The customizable party, varying stats, cool boss’s, and the fact that you have to find your own way in your adventure, it all just pulls everything together to make me feel the most like an adventurer out to save the world.
Though if I could vote twice I would also add V, as it marries gameplay and story the best in the whole series, at least in my opinion. Also the job system is amazing.
