Hi friends, I’m looking for recommendations and discussions of video game streamers or channels. Who do you love? Who do you hate?
Ones I like:
McElroy Brothers - Monster Factory is a pinnacle Youtube experience for me. I revisit the Sims 4 Sweeps Week episodes yearly. Also their ridiculous Clubhouse streams of Dress to Impress, REPO, Six Hands One Heart, etc., are a lot of fun.
AlphaBetaGamer - where I get most informed about newish/upcoming indie and horror titles. All killer, no filler I really like the variety of content, no stupid talking or voiceover, and new videos very frequently.
Let’s Game It Out - Hilarious videos of him breaking, exploiting, or messing with various titles, mostly tycoon style or PC shovelware asset flips. It’s become pretty cookie cutter lately (minimum effort for maximum profit) and not very funny, although he still has his moments.
FakeGamerGirl - Another one that might be worth a look if you’re new to her, but I have to admit I’m disappointed in recent content. Long story, but we’ll say she’s mostly a Sims channel, with some tabletop and other stuff thrown in the mix. Has a number of fun videos, though. One bright spot is her newer Sarahrune channel where she discusses D&D.
Plumbella - Another Sims streamer I like.
Novympia - A hilarious UK drag queen couple. They have a twitch and play games on their Youtube channel sometimes. Not primarily a gaming channel, but they game a bunch and they are very fun. They’re currently playing Split Fiction.
SNES Drunk - Quick reviews of old titles, mostly for SNES (as you probably figured), but he looks at other systems once in a while. A lot of the videos are “Is ___ worth playing today?” and mostly reviews, but there are lists, informational vids, and music playlists.
8-bit Music Theory - Game music analyses.
Smooth McGroove - Phenomenal a capella arrangements of game music. Highly recommended.
(sometimes) Game Grumps - I like some of their content
I don’t have any actual streamers I suppose, because I usually don’t like them. My boyfriend will watch a CaseOh video once in a while, and just the incessant screaming and annoying chat drives me insane. I’m not into a lot of streamed content, and the inanity of the commentary turns me off.
More varied as he goes beyond video games, but B-Mask is straight up my favorite critic. I come back to him often since he is such an insightful critic. Very thorough with his thoughts while being concise, informative, and extremely engaging. He looks into artists behind media and insights he gets out of thsm. He is such an inspiration to how I look at video games, even if what I write is most definitely not up to par.
I do not watch many streams/videos, because I try to play more myself and I am not good at playing games and listening to something else at the same time.
I like two Twitch streamers that have very, very friendly and highly regulated chats:
Both are variety streamers but Dodger leans heavily into the cozy side of gaming. Both are married adults with children and pets and have a life outside of gaming (so not online around the clock, take vacations etc.) and both feet on the ground of life and the daily struggles. Their audience also seems older or more mature over all. Dodgers community is more close knit and not many new faces come in, for Cohh, since he has a bigger channel and often plays “the new thing”, more often new watchers have to be teached the rules but chat helps the mods and the learning experience for someone saying something stupid is fast and thorough.
I also watch Dropped Frames either live on Sundays on Cohh’s channel or on youtube as VOD.
Dropped Frames is a weekly podcast featuring hosts itmeJP, Ezekiel_III and CohhCarnage where they discuss the on goings of being a full-time streamer and of course video games!
They often have interesting guests like Rami Ismael or nice Twitch streamers, developers or other insiders. There is a lot of “behind the scenes” talk of what is going on on Twitch/Youtube from the perspective of streamers which I also find interesting and they have a segment where they talk about the stupid things the gaming industry does. I like the chemistry of them and even when they are critical about something it never turns into hate, stays reasonable and fair.
Here are my favorite (not necessarily strictly) video game peeps:
Alina Gingertail
She does music covers, many of them video game related.
Ambient Worlds
They do longform background mixes of franchises. While many of their videos lean towards movies/shows, they also do video game content as well.
gameranx
Focuses on gaming news and reviews. I am basically subbed to this channel exclusively for Jake Baldino and his weekly Friday shows. I’ve tried watching the other videos they release on the channel but some of the other hosts I truly can’t stand.
Girlfriend Reviews
A novel game reviewing couple channel where they don’t necessarily review the games, but review what it’s like to date someone who plays said games. Very comedic and creative.
Grissini Project
A music cover channel that have made some fantastic gaming covers.
HAchubby
A Korean streamer who opened her own convenience store in Seoul and practices English.
LGR
A retro and Sims review and introspective channel.
Noclip
They make crowd-funded video game documentaries.
ProZD
A voice actor who has played all sorts of roles, including video games, and makes all sorts of content, including video games.
slater
Streamer who often uses a voice changer to fool other players into thinking they’re a child.
