Silksong Spoiler thread

The first time I paid for a bench and it didn’t fucking pop out I just started cracking up. The one that annihilates you with a big bone trap is amazing too.

Boss spoilers for the “FF” area:

Really dug how the Fourth Chorus references the infamous crab fight from Order of Ecclesia! The sudden realization of what you need to do to win is such a fun reveal, I love how the game communicates it completely wordlessly and trusts you to figure it out.

dude, i am having such trouble with the last judge. i havent had too much trouble with bosses so far but i just cant get the attack pattern timing down. i feel like if they start swinging that flail halfway through a strike and even if i click to sprint the moment i see it, they’re connecting to the sound of two HP. i’m hoping this is my last time because there is a tricky platforming section before this too. the benches set up a design choice that i ultimately enjoy, and i understand there isn’t going to be a save point right before every boss because it’ll throw that deign out. i just wish they knew i was gunna struggle with this one and put the bench right before the boss!

One of my favorite bosses so far is the chef who has the Peach side-B as one of their attacks. They got a huge ass.

i am a few hours into act 2 and I’m so excited to meet the fathomless beings. Like whatever shape they take is genuinely exciting.

Only just now realizing that once you’ve got both the wall jump and the dash, you can scurry directly up walls by hitting dash, instead of bounding up in little arcing jumps like usual. Was this something you could do in Hollow Knight and I just never noticed? Either way, it’s super handy for some of the spikier vertical platforming sections.

Also, which crest are y’all favoring? I’ve found three new ones so far, but I’ve mostly been sticking with the default for its flippy dash attack and the lovely damage buff it gets for avoiding hits.

No, the knight’s dashed was a bit different and didn’t have a sustained run. It’s new.

I’m pretty sure I locked myself out of one of them temporarily because of progression choices I made. As a result I’ve been using the reaper crest to access a downward pogo. I like the diagonal downward attack for combat however. The beast crest is interesting for it berserk mode, but the spinning downward attack feels a bit unwieldy.

I have just stuck with default because I got that one maxed out with open slots and I got used to that style of play.

I was away for the weekend so I picked the game up last night after getting back. Really happy to see no performance issues so far (2 hours in) on the Switch 1. I loved Hollow Knight on there and I wanted to keep the sequel on the same platform if I could but had concerns it might not run well.

Also happy that Hornet controls differently enough to differentiate her gameplay from The Knight’s without feeling too foreign. It sounds like the down-slash move is kind of divisive but I like it. I enjoyed when I managed to pull off two down slashes in a row on the Bell Beast as it ran under me. It made me feel very cool and skilled (I’m not) and that’s a win in my book.

Ok, now I’m torn between the Crest of the Wanderer and the Crest of the Reaper because the former has the fastest slashes, and has more blue slots for helpful augments, but the reaper allows you to use multiple tools, has slightly longer reach, and has a nice swooper uppercut as the running attack.

So far, there wasn’t something I’d call genuinely bad up until I fought against the Father of the Flame (albeit it seems like its an optional boss). The problem with it is that you do not regain any silk, removing that back and forth dynamic you’d usually get out of the combat of fighting to heal.

The most rewarding parts of this game come from little non-combat moments with the various bug inhabitants of Pharloom.

I like a bunch of the characters I’ve met, with Sherma and Shakra being the highlights for me so far. Running into them in so many different places and contexts really helps sell the idea that they’ve got their own lives going on in Pharloom, that they don’t exist purely for the player’s consumption.

By contrast, Pilby’s arc in the “BB” area felt so player-centered and mechanically plotted that it kinda took me out of the story. He gets exactly one new line of dialogue most every time you visit town, very clearly ends his development by telling you his name, and then gets discarded for an easy emotional beat since the plot is done with him. Didn’t work for me at all.

Pilby is certainly no Myla.

So, update on crests. The Wanderer’s crest has a really wonderful dash attack that allows you to bounce off the enemy and repeatedly strike up to three or four times in rapid succession. For those who love some speed, I think it’s hard to beat this crest.
