Movies and TV, Anyone?

Aw man. I forgot to mention MI8. The submarine stunt was my favorite part. But the plane sequence was also another series highlight.

The Music Box doc on kids music, If You’re Happy and You Know, is perhaps the most compelling one yet. You see that footage of kids reacting to the Wiggles like they’re watching Jimi Hendrix burn his guitar, and it clicks immediately. There is also a 20 minute sequence in the middle that will justify your hatred of Pinkfong’s Baby Shark so maybe watch it just for that.

We watched Frankenstein. It’s beautiful and grotesque in all the best ways. The colors are spectacular. Mia Goth deserves an Oscar for #turninglewqs. The score is gorgeous. I sobbed through about a third of the film. Highly recommended!

I have this original book, and while I love it dearly, and while the film was a childhood favorite of mine, the amount of merchandise is achieved seemingly out of nowhere makes me like it less, but what really makes me like it less is the fact that the movie is actually Henry Selick’s, Burton was barely there for it, and, on top of that, he essentially bogarted Selick’s entire aesthetic and co-oped it as his own. I used to love Burton. Beetlejuice is an all time favorite…but he didn’t write it. Sleepy Hollow is tremendous…but it’s just a well done adaptation. I’ve long since made peace with the fact that sometimes your childhood idol just kinda turns out to be a hack.

Today we watched the movie Big Eyes, which was new to me. It was not about the Mega Man enemy, but was based on a true story about a lady who painted kids with Big Eyes, but her husband took credit for it

I thought it was kind of unusual for a Tim Burton movie at first, because it was pretty grounded [like, no horror elements] but the husband slowly but surely becomes unhinged and abusive and that was the scariest thing of all. At one point, he’s throwing matches at wife and daughter and they’re hiding in a room–I guess that was kind of like the Shining [as far as I’ve heard]

Then they go to court, and the judge has them both do a painting right there, which is what I was thinking they should have done !

My favorite part was when he attacked an art critic with a fork, who just blocked it. I guess you might say that was one of his red flags
