Aw man. I forgot to mention MI8. The submarine stunt was my favorite part. But the plane sequence was also another series highlight.
The Music Box doc on kids music, If You’re Happy and You Know, is perhaps the most compelling one yet. You see that footage of kids reacting to the Wiggles like they’re watching Jimi Hendrix burn his guitar, and it clicks immediately. There is also a 20 minute sequence in the middle that will justify your hatred of Pinkfong’s Baby Shark so maybe watch it just for that.
We watched Frankenstein. It’s beautiful and grotesque in all the best ways. The colors are spectacular. Mia Goth deserves an Oscar for #turninglewqs. The score is gorgeous. I sobbed through about a third of the film. Highly recommended!
I have this original book, and while I love it dearly, and while the film was a childhood favorite of mine, the amount of merchandise is achieved seemingly out of nowhere makes me like it less, but what really makes me like it less is the fact that the movie is actually Henry Selick’s, Burton was barely there for it, and, on top of that, he essentially bogarted Selick’s entire aesthetic and co-oped it as his own. I used to love Burton. Beetlejuice is an all time favorite…but he didn’t write it. Sleepy Hollow is tremendous…but it’s just a well done adaptation. I’ve long since made peace with the fact that sometimes your childhood idol just kinda turns out to be a hack.
Today we watched the movie Big Eyes, which was new to me. It was not about the Mega Man enemy, but was based on a true story about a lady who painted kids with Big Eyes, but her husband took credit for it
I thought it was kind of unusual for a Tim Burton movie at first, because it was pretty grounded [like, no horror elements] but the husband slowly but surely becomes unhinged and abusive and that was the scariest thing of all. At one point, he’s throwing matches at wife and daughter and they’re hiding in a room–I guess that was kind of like the Shining [as far as I’ve heard]
Then they go to court, and the judge has them both do a painting right there, which is what I was thinking they should have done !
My favorite part was when he attacked an art critic with a fork, who just blocked it. I guess you might say that was one of his red flags
I did it. One of my most ambitious projects I have ever done. If you are a twenty something year old like me, likely this would land better for you.
We saw GOAT at the local theater on Sunday ! A goat was in it, playing a dangerous game of basketball, not unlike Space Jam. I thought it was pretty cool, but my mother thought it was stupid
There were some strong female characters including a big cat, a warthog, and a bird, and this brought Bad Guys 2 to mind
We also started the Flash at home; I found the first 2 seasons at a thrift store not too long ago. The Flash is in it, and he’s always flashing people. Green Arrow is in it too
Hundreds of Beavers owns!!
The main movie I am most excited for is the Drifter movie and Dune 3.
I have been watching the new Scrubs. I would describe it as a warm bath. Some of the jokes are cringe but in a way that feels authentic to the original show. I would say I like it. That being said, JD uncritically talked to an AI chatbot in the most recent episode. Do better New Scrubs!
I’m also watching Steel Ball Run! There is nothing like JoJo so it is nice to have it back. My only complaint is one I give with understanding and acceptance- I don’t like the 3D models on the horses. But I also get they are telling a story where tons of horses need to be animated without being given the budget for 2D animation for tons of horses. And I got over the way it looka pretty quickly. Will Poco Loco’s stand still be named Hey Ya?! Man, I hope so!
Today, I watched 4 Mario things
Super Mario Bros. (1993) - It’s bad, but like I don’t hate it. There was a really neat setpiece with the police cars that made me think “I miss practical effects”. I’ll admit that the practical stuff impressed me. It’s the least faithful, but I will admit that I laughed a lot at how dumb it is and got more enjoyment out of any of the others.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie - Rewatched this one and I still feel mostly the same as I did when I first watched it. Chris Pratt’s performance is worse on rewatch. He doesn’t scream well as Mario. On rewatch, I noticed some odd audio mixing and tuning that soumded really inconsistent, and an edit that was even worse than I thought when I first saw it. Now that I have seen the 1993 movie beforehand, the start of this movie is basically the start of that movie. I expected to like it a lot less on rewatch, but it’s still kinda mid.
Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! - The first film adaptation releasing a year after the 1985 game and you can tell that there were liberties taken given how little material they had to work off of, but not as crazy as the 1993 movie. This is that middle line between the 1993 movie and the Illumination movies in terms of how faithful of a Mario adaptation can be. Mario and Luigi actively go on the quest to get the 3 power ups to save Peach. Throughout the journey, it feels like they’re moreso lucky at reaching their goals rather than them working at reaching them. They never really get to fight up until the end. Bizarre adaptation that I didn’t get too much out of. I was baffled when during the fight against Koopa, when Mario was trying to use the 3 powerups, he spontaneously gets distracted by Mario flavored product placement. Mario does the So Long, Gay Bowser thing 10 years before Mario 64.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie - I just got out of this one. I’m feeling complicated. A lot of it is references and I’ll admit that I had fun watching those references, but this should not have been marketed as a Galaxy movie. It never reached the cinematic heights of the games. I did not feel the grand, cinematic experience in this movie the way I did the games. I had my concerns from the first trailer and yeah. Those concerns were true like crammed in beats and clips that were detatched from Galaxy. There’s stuff I like more here than the 2023 movie like less needledrops (and they’re much more tasteful than the 2023 movie), more varied uses of styles, and I feel like they did try having an arc. Even if it was sloppily handled. But yeah, this is still jingling keys the movie and I am a victim. Bit worse than the previous movie.
If I remember right, ‘93 and 2k3 Mario movie also had the same ending in which Mario and Bowser warp to Brooklyn for the final showdown
‘93 also gives Mario a Brooklyn accent, maybe not an authentic one but that’s what I prefer for him !
This is cute, I hope they make more!
