I want to see it because I like the original, but The Witch I feel is one of the most overrated movies in the history of overrated movies. So I’m very, very trepidatious about it. Thankfully a ticket is only £8, but I won’t get that time back if it’s shit.
I love Spriggan! One of my favourites growing up, speaking volumes of my unconventional childhood. I still watch it back every once in a while. I really enjoy how visually and conceptually wild the film veers in its climax.
I haven’t watched too much of note of late, but last week I did finish watching Inuyashiki Last Hero on a complete whim with no prior knowledge except being familiar with the mangaka’s prior work Gantz. In contrast to it, I’m surprised with how much Inuyashiki shows a staggering sense of emotional maturity. It’s a really high concept, wild premise presented not only with harrowing sincerity, but with a great deal of compassion that made my heart sing.
It was one of those shows I didn’t have an emotional reaction to as I was watching it, but I was just thinking about it, re-listened to the opening and ending themes, and then weeped openly. So I decided I should write something about it, in that case: that’s the mark of some good fiction, to me!
Conclave was great.
Anyone else think the Onyx Cinder in Skeleton Crew look like a smaller Normandy?
Saw Nosferatu. It is certainly good, but not brilliant. 1000x times better than The Witch. It was wonderfully filmed and really well acted, but could have been half an hour shorter and the whole “women’s sexually = evil” sub plot was pretty one the nose (honestly can’t remember if that’s in the original, but either way it could have done without it).
Glad I saw it, but wouldn’t rush back.
Can’t believe the brilliantCompletely Made Up Adventures of Dick Turpin has been cancelled but garbage like Only Murders in the Building is getting another season. It had played itself out after the first.
I definitely got the opposite message from the film.
Yea, she is ultimately the hero despite how she is treated throughout the film by the men around her.
Interesting.
I say the above because Orlock said he was asleep until he heard Ellen’s cries of loneliness. She said their relationship started out innocently but soon turned to sex and then she continued to lust for him.
This continued until she met Thomas. This I took to mean that once her lust has been satisfied by a living man, the evil of Orlock no longer had any power over her.
Ellen said she remained happy until after their honeymoon, at which time she started to dream of Orlock again. I took this to mean her lustful desires had again awoken because Thomas, for whatever reason, no longer satisfied her, thus a woman’s list invites evil.
Learning of Thomas through Ellen’s dreams, Orlock devised a plan to take her for himself and used Knock to get Thomas sent to his castle where he planned to kill him, thus having no barrier to Ellen.
Orlock arrives in Germany to find Ellen still wanting him (this is said many times) but her love for Thomas is stopping her giving herself to Orlock completely. When Thomas returns to Germany himself, Orlock starts killing Ellen’s friends and family because she won’t give herself completely to him, despite part of herself obviously wanting to, as seen via her fits.
Basically, everything that happens is because Orlock is convinced Ellen desires him because she keeps dreaming about him and they continue their “affair” (her fits). If she had not started lusting after him again once she was married none of it would have happened. Basically, her sex called him to her. Yes, she may have redeemed herself by the film’s end and saved Thomas, but millions had to die beforehand all because she couldn’t control her lust.
Maybe I did misread the film, but this is what I took away from it. It’s backed up by historical evidence of women’s sexuality being seen as a “vile” or, at a minimum, “problematic” issue by even the most learned doctors of the time the film it set (and after). The doctor even mentions having seen women in crazed states (I can’t remember the exact wording) before. They used to think a woman who was experiencing what we could now call an anxiety attack just needed to good fiddling to “fix.” This is basically how the dildo was invented.
So all that is why I read the film as I did. I’d be interested to hear your take on it.
This time, we re-watched Batman, and then Batman Returns today
–Never really thought of this, but this Penguin…a guy who lives in the sewers, and controls animals…he’s like a movie Rat King [from Ninja Turtles]. Batman was ready for his rocket penguin plan, somehow. Batman’s always ready for anything
–Poor Catwoman ! She goes through quite a bit in this one. You know what might’ve been cool, if she and Batman sort of teamed up at the climax when the Organ Grinder & co. are stealing the kids. And stopped them
–Poor Ice Princess, too; she fell off a building ! Wonder if she’s ok…all she’d need is a bunch of cats to lick her, I think
–Catwoman uses a whip like my favorite Street Fighter character, Poison. Though, I prefer the riding crop version [gameplay-wise]
–Burton Batman loves to kill minions, doesn’t he ? He just can’t get enough of it. But, doesn’t want Catwoman to kill Shrek. Even though she might’ve had a point; he was too rich, so…actually, I wonder why Batman suggested he would go to jail ? The Penguin knows he k-lled a guy[as we see in the beginning], but he’s obviously the kind of person who’s allowed to do that
– We had the NES game long before seeing the movie. I remember seeing “Penguin’s Duck Vehicle” listed as a boss…he certainly does have a Duck Vehicle, doesn’t he !
– “Mistletoe can be deadly if you eat it” is the new “Did you ever dance with the Devil in the pale moonlight”
This is something that actually ruined Dark Knight Rises for me. One of the pivotal points of Batman’s character is that he is the ultimate planner; he considers every possible outcome and strategies for it. Hell he had (comic spoilers) plans for taking out the whole Justice League incase any of them ever went bad, including Superman and Wonder Woman.
The idea that he had nothing in place to protect Gotham after the events of Dark Knight and was blindsided by Bane is just laughable.
Sorry, rant over.
This time, we watched Batman Forever
– Two-Face is man, but attorney. I liked how he was polyamorous, but maybe not the best role model. I wouldn’t drop someone in BOILING ACID !
– Could Batman have gotten out of that [bank] situation if the guy had not had a hearing aid
– As Pitch Meeting pointed out–Edward was sending Riddles BEFORE becoming the Riddler?! And Batman couldn’t figure out who it was until the end ?
– Chase was pretty thirsty for Batman, wasn’t she…get in line ! Vicki, Selina, Chase…he can always say “I’M BATMAN”, except to his love interest du jour
– Speaking of which, is it professional for a psychologist to call people wackos
– Robin is introduced, but doesn’t really do much [as Robin] until the end–and then he gets kidnapped. Because he listened to Batman about not killing Two-Face. And then Batman…well, he doesn’t kill Two-Face, but just makes him die.
– Did he really think he could adopt Robin, and Robin would never find out HE’S BATMAN
– Chase tied up ! Interesting… <3 I used to wonder how Riddler knew Robin liked cartoons. Oh yeah, he read his mind. I find that [mind-reading thing] a little unrealistic
– Riddle me this: can Two-Face sanction the Riddler’s buffoonery ? That’s the real ? question…
– You know, I played the [Game Gear] game of this first long before seeing the movie [just like Batman Returns]. It’s…it’s not very good ! But last year, I finished the SNES version out of curiosity
So Netflix is set to up it’s pricing again. I’m lucky in that I’m currently getting it as a bonus from my bank so it only costs me £3 a month.
While there is a lot I enjoy on there (the stuff out of Korea is awesome) the price is getting to the point where I’m not sure I’d continue if I did have to pay full price. This increase hasn’t affected the UK, but if it does it’ll be roughly £15 per month. I think I could stretch to £20, but that would be all.
It’ll be interesting to see how far these services will be able to push the price before people nope out.
I have watched 12 movies last year and one (old) series to 2/3rd on Netflix. If it wasn’t for friends having me as part of their “family”, which Netflix doesn’t recognise because they only recognise users of smart TVs and not people watching on a PC, I would just not watch.
I got one year of Paramount+ for 3,99€/ month and share that with friends, but we decided that I cancel before that promo wears off in April, because what they offer in Germany is not worth more than that. I will pay the money into their Netflix subscription instead so I am not just leeching from them music and tv.
If Netflix gets more expensive I doubt friends will keep it up (they are more into music than tv) and I am fine with that. I will use movies and series from my library and their smaller streaming service “film friends” with my library card then.
Funnily enough the one sevice that most of us are tempted to get is HULU but it is not available in Germany except you pay on top for a VPN and get access to a US payment method and that’s to much work for a streaming service and expensive.
Only Pepperidge Farm remembers when everything was on Netflix…
My partner and i usually split our streaming services, so i pay for netflix, and she does hulu, which isnt so bad, but if it keeps going up i may spend like 3 months clearing my back log and then dropping it.
We watched Batman and Robin this time !
–Batman was in it, and Robin was in it. Though, a different Batman, you might say
–Poison Ivy and Mr. Freeze ! [feat. Bane] My favorite Poison is the one in Final Fight. Isn’t this the first time none of the villains die
Ivy teaming up with Mr. Freeze to freeze the world and start over…interesting. I’ve considered villains like this, who have given up on humanity [relatable at times]. But, I think that would be bad for the plants
– They should go back and make Batman Unchained, the proposed 5th one…or maybe not. I heard it was to have Scarecrow and Harley…OH ! Here’s an idea: Poison Ivy teams up with Harley Quinn ! Just like in an episode of BTAS, which we now have and have just started
– She briefly becomes a Prison Babe…hm…well, more of a mental health facility [?]. And Riddler and Two-Face’s suits are here ! I remember them ! From Batman Forever !
– May have to look into the Dark Knight Trilogy at some point; I actually got it for half price one day but haven’t watched them. I always thought I wouldn’t like them as much, except for one part
Severance is a blast. There’s some great philosophical sci-fi drama in whimsical wrapping. I like the performances, and the OST is rock solid. I’m happy it’s back and am devouring it every Thursday night the minute it becomes available.
I’m going to rewatch the first season and pick up second season when more of the episodes have dropped.
OR you could catch up and I could send you my theories (severing is bad?) and remarks (cool new opening!) every week.
Well, it wouldn’t take us long to rewatch so I’d probably be caught up pretty quickly.
