Movies and TV, Anyone?

Isn’t there an episode that airs this coming Friday? Episode eight?

lol I don’t know my bf said that was the last one. Guess not.

I think it was just the concluding half of the Acrobatic Silky arc. I assume the eighth episode will set up the next season. So you have one more to look forward to.

More American-washing. Guess there’s not even one Scandinavian actor out there.

Just piss the fekk off.

Which character are you referring to? Several of the voice actors from the original are back, including Gerard Butler. And other UK actors like Nick Frost have replaced some of the actors that didn’t return for this one. The kids were always voiced by Canadians/Americans in the original films, it was really only the adults that were voiced by Scotts and the like.

The main character. Can’t remember his name. If he’s not American than he’s Canadian, which is just as bad IMO. Vikings came from Scandinavia, thus it should be Scandinavian actors who play them.

I’m simply getting a bit sick of Hollywood constantly doing this kind of thing, especially when it comes to historical (ish) characters. Scandies are proud of their Viking heritage, it’s very important to them. That should be respected by hiring actors from that country.

Vikings historically assimilated various cultures including gaels in the Ireland and Scotland, and other groups in the British isles. The Vikings were a lot more diverse than just the Danes and the Norse and they had settlements as far as Canada. And I believe the settlements in How to Train your Dragon were conceived of as Viking settlements in the British isles. Also historical Vikings don’t map 1:1 onto Scandinavian peoples. And having a bunch of Norwegians act in English isn’t really more accurate, it’s just another compromise.

I think the choice to predominantly use Scottish actors was the same reason lots of period pieces use English accents even if the people depicted are French/German/Austrian/Russian etc. it’s not an uncommon practice, even amongst British filmmakers. But yes, they chose Canadian and American actors to ply the kids, which undoubtedly because their primary target audience is American children. I’ve seen my share of British media where the children have inexplicable accents from the British isles even if the characters aren’t explicitly English, Welsh or Scottish. Filmmakers regularly have to make decisions like this based on their target audiences, and I don’t think there’s any way to really make a fantasy film set in English about Vikings that hunt dragons and really nail any sort of accuracy.

The thing that bother me about this film is that the whole thing feels pointless, right down to the frame by frame duplication of the original. I’m tired of every animated film getting an unnecessary live action remake.

Agreed. And all the adaptions have been rubbish.

Oh, yes!

Was the first good? I didnt see it, assumed it wouldnt be all that worthwhile. Never heard much about it either

I have heard it was a good film, but in my language, they hired famous people who didn’t know a thing about voice acting. Five main characters, just one voice actor among them. So I refused to watch it.

I really enjoyed it. I don’t really follow film news so I can’t comment on the perceived silence, but it obviously did well enough to warrant a sequel. I’d certainly give it a watch, especially if you’re like me find Disney animation to be cooky cutter rubbish.

i saw wicked, and it was good. it definitely feels like a studio picture with the script being refined but safe. performances are strong- the two leads and goldblum feel perfectly cast. i also always enjoy michelle yeoh hamming it up. sets and costumes are amazing and honestly, the highlight. i liked all the songs however the mixing on ariana’s vocals sometimes lacks clarity which makes her musical jokes not land. the movie (and presumably the musical upon which it is based) does its best to exist within the world of oz- to make those original details from the old movie more valuable without having the movie be a massive reference fest. while i do believe it succeeds at the former, the latter is a failure. it feels the need to lore-ify everything from the original from the witch’s green skin to how the flying monkeys can fly to why the cowardly lion is cowardly. i still however mostly had a good time remembering that the stage play came out before this style of overthinking became played out in IP pop movies.

it was fun! i love how cynical it is! just like me! ill watch the next one.

Very likely not the mixing

i dont listen to her music so i dont know how clear she is with her singing. that being said, my ears are not the best after years of blasting my headphones so i could hear the white stripes over the sound of my lawnmower, and i only noticed this issue when grande was hitting the top of her register.

We watched Superman Returns this time ! Superman was in it, and he returned

– This one seemed a little more dramatic than the previous ones. Reminded me of watching Jackie Chan’s “New P-lice Story” back in the day

– Oh, Lex Luthor is finally bald like he’s supposed to be. Glad they listened to me

– Lois Lane has a kid now–she must’ve had SEX !

– And it seems like it might’ve been with SUPERMAN, instead of her husband. Or the kid just has superpowers by coincidence

– Lex Luthor’s lovely assistant this time has a pomeranian; looked like our Doggo we used to have. His ladies always seem to turn good at the last minute, don’t they. Hope Superman went back and saved the dog !

– Superman flew back in time for a do-over in the first one, which might raise the question of why [in-universe] he doesn’t just do this every time

Oh, and watched Heathers for free on YouTube the other day. It was ok, but I like a lighter fare

Yeah, they do. Moana 2 has started having trailers pop up. While there are of course exceptions (the first Moana was pretty good) I find them to mostly be cookie-cutter, recycled and uninspired, both from a story and animation standpoint.

When you compare Disney to other animation studios like Dreamworks (Prince of Egypt, Chicken Run, Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, the absolutely phenomenal Wild Robot) and Sony Animation (the Spider-Verse films, The Mitchells vs. the Machines) or even some of the more recent DC Animated films from WB Animation, my personal feeling is Disney is far from the “best” animation studio anymore.

And yeah, their live action adaptions are utter bollocks.

Oh i mostly agree. They still occasionally land some big ones but yeah, im less and less impressed with them in the laat 10 years or so. And several have been completely forgettable as well.
