Warning for talk about severe sexual crimes against a minor:
Basically there is a director named Victor Salva who was (and still is) very close with Coppola and Coppola was pretty much a mentor to him. Salva was arrested and sentenced to jail for the rape of a 12 year old actor on one of the movies he was directing and that Coppola had helped finance.
Coppola proceeded to harass the victim telling the boy he was blacklisting him and never allowing him to work in the industry ever again. He also helped to reduce Salva’s sentence so that Salva only had to serve 15 months in jail. He also told Salva while he was in jail that the whole experience “will only make you a better artist”.
He also tried to defend Salva’s actions in an interview, saying “You have to remember, while this was a tragedy, that the difference in age between Victor and the boy was very small – Victor was practically a child himself.”
Salva was in reality 29 years old when he raped the boy.
And to this day Coppola from my understanding continues to help finance Salva’s movies.
He’s a genuinely evil human being. But yeah a lot of people don’t know about it, I didn’t know about it until not that long ago. It has been pretty much ignored, a lot of it at least.
Some of it is there if you text search for ‘Salva’. It’s kind of buried and I think it’s only like a couple of sentences. Definitely not enough information.
I watched The Sixth Sense, and it was good. I didn’t love it, as I’m aware of the film’s famous twist, and the film loses a lot when you know. Basically every scene between Bruce Willis and his wife is made immediately pointless. Plus the whole idea that the ghosts don’t know that they are dead only exists so the twist can exist. That’s not to say all is lost as there is effective cinematography and some fun writing. Plus Haley and Toni Collette have a lot to work with here and make a meal of their performances. It’s a good film that is probably more fun if you don’t know the twist.
We rewatched it a couple weeks back. I’m still lukewarm on the film, but it does have its positive moments. Toni Collette is acting the shit out of that movie, but she does that for every movie she is in, which is why she’s the best!
I also watched Creep, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome! Its antagonist/protagonist relationship is a little annoying, but the movie is a brisk 77 minutes and finishes before the dynamic breaks. I will say I greatly prefer the motion of this film to something like Paranormal Activity where the burn is so slow that you question if there is even a flame. Creep is a fun, cheap horror flick that leads you to question whether one character is in danger or if the other character is just odd.
Creep is a phenomenal movie and a fanastic mumblegore entry. And somehow they managed to do it again with the sequel. Duplass is perfection in both films.
I will suggest that this is essential to the effectiveness of the film.
nice i also watched Corpse Bride earlier this week after watching Beetljuice Beetljuice and wanting to check out some more Tim Burton. I’m starting to develop a very different view of his work because of it.
I’ve seen some great stuff the past month!
Mary and the Witches Flower: Nothing incredible but its very enjoyable. This is basically a a Studio Ghibili Harry Potter rip off. (Its appropriate for children)
Hard Boiled: I don’t know if I seen any John Woo, so time to fix that this had always been on my list. crazy its one of those things that once you see it, you start to see references to it everywhere. its just a great off the rails action film with lots of gun fighitng, and amazing acrobatics from chow yun fat
Furiosa I was really in the perfect mood for it and it left me pretty wowed. I thought it was better than the first. It was more realistic seeming, with a lot of attention to detail on things like costumes and props.
Genocyber I am suprised I hadnt seen this one yet. I thought it was a fantastic 90’s anime full of all the stuff i like: starts out as cyberpunk, goes into an apocalyptic arc, and then, final dooom!
Devilman Crybaby I loved this. I didnt really like the animation style but its okay after a while (and even good in some spots) I also liked the originals but heard mixed things about this one. It’s not that different from the previous anime i watch in how it delves into apocalyptic themes. The story and characters were pretty satisfying overall. Was better than I had expected
I’m watching Shrek and I gotta say, I’m surprised how well it holds up. The animation really feels ugly even compared to Toy Story from 6 years earlier (although the models are uglier in Toy Story). And yes, many of the referential humor was dated at release and is dated now. Also the score is bland as hell (however- iconic soundtrack). But the dynamic between Myers and Murphy is unstoppable. Murphy in particular is funny in a way that feels rare post Bowfinger. I am honestly surprised as Shrek’s status as a meme had me ready for this to outright stink. But I’m mostly having a good time!
Watched Edward Scissorhands last night ! [free on YouTube]
– He’s called Edward Scissorhands because his hands are sci…because his hands are sciss…
– So Peg can just go up there and bring this guy home ? What’s he been eating ? Does he even need to eat ?
– At first everyone loved him, which I thought was kind of a subversion of the usual “strange” guy whom everyone fears. But then this changes at some point; they turn on him : [
– And at that point, I realized this could sort of be an allegory for people with certain disabilities, maybe even like mine [in terms of social interactions] so that got kind of real for me at least
– I thought, uh oh…at some point, he’s going to hurt or k-ll someone with those Scissor hands. And it will be like a Lenny from Of Mice and Men situation
– You know…the castle, the snow, the unusual sort of guy in love…it brought Beauty and the Beast to mind
– Can’t wait to tell my friend I saw this one today ! She just got a scissor hands tattoo [she also has a Sand Worm and Jack Skellington]. Once we were talking and she was roasting the bad guy [boyfriend] for fighting a guy with knives for hands and I’m like, wait, don’t spoil anything !
The bf and I watched Outside. It was just ok, pretty boring, but fair warning to anyone interested, it’s about 96% drama and 4% zombie action.
We also watched Don’t Move. I’m probably the wrong person to talk about movies because I hate them, and I especially hate scary or violent movies. But when I watch something like this, I’m just like, what’s the point? I didn’t feel invested, it felt poorly acted, and totally expected.
Ok thanks for coming to my movie corner, have a great day
I started Supernatural finally. Ive been recommended it for years and years. My first thoughts are that its weird to see Padaleki in something other than Gilmore Girls cause i cant see him as anyone else. And i feel like its the show fans of Buffy moved on to after Buffy ended maybe?
Also watched the first 2 episodes of Yakuza. Its…fine. lots of melodrama. Most of the casting, theyre good actors/actresses for the most part, but dont really look like the game character’s so far. Itll probably have some fans from those unfamiliar with the games, but game fans are probably going to tear it apart.
