I have heardof Red Dawrf and never started watching it. Because I always thought Red Dawrf (american version) looked really cheezy.
The original Red Dwarf (British) is kinda cheesy, but the show is aware of it and embraces it. It’s a comedy, so it works well in that context. The writing though is really clever and every character is wonderful. I’d recommend looking up some clips on YouTube to see what you think.
ok will do. Also a have you ever seen the show All Creatures Great and Small
I’ve not, no. I’ve heard of it but never had the chance to see it
In the spirit (pun intended) of fairness I watched a trailer for the US version of Ghosts. Oooooh, boy…
I like Paramount plus but those ghost trailers.
-NEW GHOST
-GHOST LEAVING
-NEW GHOST POWER
makes me want to cancel paramount plus despite all the good shows that it has
I watched Lisa Frankenstein. While I overall enjoyed the film, I found the direction to be inconsistent. This is Zelda Williams first feature length film so I didn’t have expectations. She ended up doing a lot creatively, but I do think there are some tonal issues which result from her doing so much. However, I don’t think that should deter you from checking it out if you are interested. There is still a lot of fun to be had.
Diablo Cody’s writing reached new levels of cynicism and absurdity (“Half the school is about to go to Boner Town and they don’t even know it! Right dad?”). Kathryn Newton and Cole Sprouse both surprised me by delivering some physically hilarious performances. The rest of the cast is great- specifically the rest of the Swallows family. Speaking of which, my wife and I were both impressed by the set design. The Swallows’ home strongly reflects the film’s satire by being both real and surreal. I also like the graveyard, but there is one shot that is lit improperly, and you can tell one of the gravestones is less stone and more styrofoam.
I don’t want to whine too much about the direction because if Zelda Williams makes another movie and it has this same vibe, I’d check it out. There is some bad ADR. There are some editing issues which I would describe as “CinemaSins nitpicks”. But mainly, there are moments that reach for sincerity that I just don’t think can be grasped by a film which has goofy murders and goofy sexual harassment. If anything, these moments make me question how much of the movie’s camp is intentional. I’m choosing to believe the direction is purposeful, but the sincerity, in my eyes, is misguided.
Still a lot of fun. If you like other Diablo Cody scripts, you’ll probably like this.
So as a casual film goer who doesn’t know who Zelda Williams or Diable Cody is would it be worth seeing?
I am very impressed with Cole Sprouse more and more as an actor. They did a fantastic job on Riverdale and I might have to check out Lisa Frankenstein for not only his acting but the absurdity of it all. Reminds me of My Boyfriend’s Back from 1993.
Diablo Cody’s big work as a writer is Juno. Zelda Williams is Robin Williams’ daughter.
If this trailer looks fun to you and you go in just expecting to have fun, I think you will have fun.
I saw the trailer and did think it looked fun. Also enjoyed Juno, so will think I’ll goive this a shot
It doesn’t excite me.
I thought this and then Kotaku expressed it- “Discount Guardians of the Galaxy”
Recently watched the first season of Clone High (something I’d been meaning to get to for years and years). I have a fair bit of nostalgia for that era of cartoons and that art style in particular (Dexter’s Lab, Powerpuff Girls, etc). So something of that sort but aimed for adults sounded like lots of fun. But sadly, I ended up finding it overall not very funny. Most of the jokes just didn’t land for me, though I will give kudos for the voice performances at least.
Perhaps to some degree I simply expected a more clever script, considering the premise. I figured there’d be lots of jokes related to history (since the premise is about the clones of famous people like Abraham Lincoln, Joan of Arc, and Ghandi, all attending high school together). I guess in a way it was a sort of meta joke to specifically not go that route? At any rate these characters could’ve been any regular high schoolers and almost nothing would need to be changed. Perhaps another way to put it is, I hoped the humor style barometer would’ve lean more toward Futurama rather than Family Guy.
How is it 2024 and we are still getting very mediocre at best looking video game adaptations? Who knows, it may turn out decent but just from the trailer, it looks horrible.
Hollywood has a very low bar for quality of content, yet a very high bar for earnings. They want a low risk film that appeals to the widest possible audience and that draws large crowds for significant revenue. That usually doesn’t result in the most exciting of creative works.
Speaking of low bars, I took precious time out of my life to spend it watching Madame Web and that has to be one of the worst, baffling films I’ve seen in a long time. I’m still questioning what I saw. I think it broke me because I’m tempted to see it again.
To put this into perspective, I still haven’t seen Killers of the Flower Moon, or Oppenheimer. I think something is wrong with me. My curiosity got the better of me.
Well you know what they say, "When you take on the responsibility, great power will come.|
It can be fun to watch an especially bad movie sometimes, especially if you can joke about it with friends. Also think it’s worth seeing bad movies because it helps you understand what makes good movies good. It’s at least how you can begin to notice the difference between good and bad camerawork, editing, pacing, music, sound mixing, effects, costuming, lighting, writing, acting, etc.
What constantly baffles me is how they take something like that, which has decades of quality stories, and make it bad. Take, for example, Batman Vs Superman. Two of the longest running, most celebrated characters in modern history, with literally thousands of stories between them, many of which have seen them at odds many, many times, and you produce that movie? Honestly, you almost have to respect just how badly they frakked it up.
While Madame Web isn’t as storied as those two characters there is still heaps of stuff there to take from. How do you have all that source material and produce…whatever the hell that film is?
The way Hollywood operates really needs to change. It’s just ridiculous that shlock like this is made for those kinds of budgets. Similarly, it’s equally ridiculous that incredibly good films are considered flops if they don’t make 200% of their costs back half an hour after opening in the US.
Maybe I’m getting old and jaded but I’m more and more feeling Hollywood is an absolute farce of an industry of which I care less and less. The constant self congratulatory circle jerks and certain directors going “oh, you don’t like my film? You’re obviously touched in the head” speaks to an industry that is so far up it’s own arse it puts an oroborus to shame.
