Don’t know, mate. Didn’t watch last ep 4.
Thems fighting words!
There are heaps of brilliant Australian comedies; Mother and Son*, Utopia, Russel Coit, Kath and Kim, Housos, Fast Forward, Wilfred, The Adventures of Lano & Woodley*, I could go on. The problem is I don’t know how much of it is available overseas. It’s nigh impossible to get much here in the UK.
As for Canadian comedy, I’m not hugely up on Canadian series, but Tucker and Dale vs Evil is one of the best movies ever! I also really enjoyed The Whole Nine Yards, Psycho Goreman, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (the graphic novels are classics!), * I think Ed was Canadian, and I loved that series.
Having said all that, the British are the comedy kings as far as I’m concerned. Nothing has ever topped Monty Python IMO, and there are just so many brilliant British comedy series and films.
Man, the 90s X-Men has to have one of, if not the, best opening of any animated series, surely?
Right, new topic; fav cartoon opening montages/ themes. Here’s my two non-X-Men favs;
lol somehow I missed the rest of your post. Whoops
Saw Barbie yesterday. Masterclass of pastiche, homage and original creative work. Production design was incredible, the actors were all phenomenal and it was a joy to watch.
This week I’m going to the cinema to rewatch Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on Tuesday, because my brother hasn’t seen it yet and then he and my partner and I have tickets for TMNT on Thursday. I can’t remember the last time I was this enamoured with Hollywood output, but it’s been a good year for mainstream films, especially ones with copious amounts of stylistic experimentation and a Hollywood that’s slightly willing to let filmmakers stretch their artistic legs.
@BMO, you’ll never believe who is coming over to my house today- the brother of Joe Swanberg. Haha. My sister in law is staying with us and he apparently is the boyfriend of one of her friends. I’ll keep my opinion on his brother to myself.
My partner was once mistaken for Swanberg’ ex-wife Kris when Kris and my partner were both teaching at Northwesten, lol.
Isn’t the rule that if you’re in Chicago, you’re bound to cross paths with a Swanberg?
I think you’re just being unfair to Joe because he’s based in Chicago
I like Christopher Storer, and he’s from Park Ridge!
Idk I guess it is just now dawning on me how Chicago this guy is. Maybe I’m starting to like him now!
Joking aside, what is it about Swanberg films that you don’t enjoy? Is it just the lower budget nature of his films compared to other Mumblecore directors that went more mainstream and thus higher budget?
Hmmmmm…
I’m realizing I’ve only seen Drinking Buddies which moves like molasses, and that’s from me, a man who likes slow stuff. Maybe I’d like more of his stuff, but seeing that movie (which I really didn’t like) when he already had this creative reputation really put a sour taste in my mouth.
Okay his brother is gunna be here any minute so it is time to stop wikipedia-ing him.
Lol, yeah I recognize he’s not from Chicago, just based there.
My sister in law outted me as a film guy the moment Joe’s brother came over. He asked me if I liked Mumblecore. I said yea. He goes- “not me!” Then we basically rehashed the convo about whether Baumbach is mumblecore or not.
I feel somewhat evolved in my understanding of gender roles and expectations. Like being a woman or a man basically mean nothing. I infrequently wear sports coats and my wife wears a dress occasionally. But that’s kinda it.
However, when my wife told me that she was gunna see Barbie with her friends, what the heck am I supposed to do? Am I, a 33 year old man, really going to see Barbie by myself? I would like to, but there is too much of a societal stigma. And I can’t convince my bros to go see Barbie! They’re gunna see the Meg 2. You think they’ll be down with my Barbie movie night? Get real! I’m gunna wait until it comes out to buy through Google and I’ll watch it in the privacy of my home like an honorable mayor.
Why not? And what is the stigma you’re referring to?
Yeah, just go see it. Or ask your gay friends to go.
You can always sail the high seas.
And buy a ticket to an unrushed hour (without going) if it makes you feel better
Am I, a 33 year old man, really going to see Barbie by myself?
Sure, why not? If people’s minds are too small to accept that you want to see it, then that’s 100% their problem.
