Movies and TV, Anyone?

I enjoyed what I watched of Bee and Puppycat but ran out of steam on it. I like her vibes, I just wanted the energy to pick up on Bee and Puppycat. But I’m with you that the trailer for F&C is a strong indicator that we’re in for a good time.

  1. Are you dissing mumblecore? There are some quality films from mumblecore filmmakers, especially by the Duplass Bros.
  2. I’m not sure if Baumach came up in the mumblecore scene.

Did you watch the web series, or the show, or both?

Just the Netflix show. While I didn’t finish it, I do believe I watched all of what is covered in the webseries.

The Duplass Bros have some quality films. I’m not a fan of Joe Swanberg films who is mumblecore for all intents and purposes.

I checked and I was mistaken. I had it in my mind that Baumbach co-wrote on all Gerwig’s recent film, but I guess this is their second film they’ve co-written (first being Frances Ha). Idk is Ladybird mumblecore? Maybe I just have a sour Joe Swanberg taste in my mouth and don’t want to connect Gerwig’s recent work which I enjoy with him.

The Netflix show kind of remakes the web series, but they are different, just FYI.

I get what you mean about Swanberg, but mumblecore can probably be first attributed to Andrew Bujalski, and then both the Duplass Borthers and Swanberg released their first mumblecore films in the same year. I get that people think of Swanberg, but the Duplas Brothers and even Gerwig are also at the core of the non-movement’s artistic tendencies.

Also Mumblecore gave rise to Mumblegore, and I can’t complain about that.

I’m also a big fan of Amy Seimetz and not only did she come up in mumblecore/mumblegore, her style is heavily influenced by those non-movements.

There were clips of young Marceline so fingers crossed we get some more insight into the period of the war and aftermath.

Speaking of all this, whatever happened to Rebecca Sugar? And what’s Pendleton Ward been doing since Midnight Gospel?

I know Sugar worked on the story for Thundercats Roar and I think the pandemic cut that short (also angry manchildren because they have no chill).

Ward worked on Bee and Puppycat: Lazy in Space most recently.

The whole DCAU is better than it has any right to be.

Maybe there’s a cultural misunderstanding here as no one really uses that phrase in Australia or the UK, but why would there be a limit on how good animation can be?

Totally agree with this! I kinda feel sorry for mon-comic readers who feel Infinity War and Engldgame werw epic because as good as they are they have absolutely nothing on stories like Infinity Gauntlet or Crisis on Infinite Earth’s.

My wife introduced me to Schit’s Creek as both her and her siste love it. I wasn’t expecting much TBH, but it wasn’t the ridiculous “yelling=funny” rubbish most US “comedies” are. It’s a little more nuanced.

However, I still didn’t really enjoy it and decided to quit after four episodes. I didn’t find any of the characters likeable (I know that’s kind of the point, but that kind of thing has never appealed to me) and the vast majority of jokes fell flat.

I predicted the end of episode joke about the town sign, and that for me is aclesr indication of something not worth the bother.

“Better than it has any right to be” is just a colloquialism for exceeded my (and presumably your) expectations. All those DC animated shows I mentioned are far richer than the majority of animated/kids’ TV that was on at the time of release. While animated/kids TV shows have gotten better over time IML, I still don’t know of any other programs that match the tone and interconnectivity of the DCAU.

Just got back from seeing Aussie horror film Talk to Me. Man, what a film! Easily one of the best horror movies since It Follows. Forget Jordan Peele’s movies, this is brilliant underrated horror.

I honestly can’t speak highly enough of it. Unsettling and creepy without going over the top, brilliant performances by all the cast, amazingly shot, great story and an awesome ending. Everyone needs to see this!

That’s because it’s Canadian

Well then I’m extra disappointed as I thought Canadians were much better at comedy. Oh well…

Better than Australians? Without a question. We are actually funny

Nah, that’s unfair. Lots of Australian comedies are pretty great. Nearly as good as Kiwi comedy.

I stopped after a few episodes, it just wasn’t doing it for me. Does it get better? The highlight for me was the fruit wine commercial but alas, I get why the show can’t all be Moira Rose sketch comedy. Also Chris Elliott always manages to convincingly play utterly unlikeable characters.

The show is pretty stellar all the way through and only gets better. And if you want a lot more Moira Rose you’ll get it.
