Movies and TV, Anyone?

If he’s using it the way I think, it means a “white people joint, or thing”. Jawn is slang for joint, and I think it’s originally New York vernacular.

Still don’t really get it. Is he saying the film is full of/only for white people? I don’t know anything about it, but it seems a weird thing to say about a film.

Yes, Wes Anderson movies are generally thought of as boring white person crap lol

I definitely don’t think it is only for white people. The movies are full of white people and features problems often faced by those who are white and privileged. That doesn’t mean it is bad. I think Wes Anderson is a great filmmaker.

Personally I really enjoyed Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs. Grand Budapest Hotel was pretty good too.

Been watching Netflix’s Skull Island animated series and it’s really good! Great animation, really well realised characters and lots of fun adventure tropes. The storyline might not be the most original but everything within it is really well done.

I watched The Super Mario Bros Movie (2023) so I guess I can give my two coins on that. It’s… (drumroll)… okay. I was amused for enough of the movie to not dislike it, but it never really did anything to make me feel particularly impressed either. A case where the movie could have easily been much, much worse than it was, and I think as an ad for the Mario IP it certainly did a bang-up job on that front. (I doubt Nintendo could be more pleased with the movie’s success.)

But the story mostly felt by-the-numbers, the characters mostly felt meh, the animation and music mostly felt uninspired, etc etc. (And I don’t really care for the counter-argument I see everywhere to the effect of “what did you expect? it’s Mario, not Shakespeare! do you just hate fun?”) I’m fine with a silly and mindless action cartoon, but I think this one could’ve worked a lot better if it cut a subplot or two (e.g. could’ve saved the Kongs for the next movie IMO), and reworked things a bit to focus on a couple core character relationships (I would’ve gone with a Mario and Luigi’s brotherhood is tested but in the end strengthened A-plot, and a Bowser and Peach antics B-plot).

I also wondered if they really needed the Kongs here; that’s a totally different game. Is there not enough material in Mainline Mario

Of course, you might say Mario should’ve met Donkey Kong at some point before this adventure, going by the games

Oh well

I’m gonna watch Drive Away Dolls too without seeing a trailer because Coen movies are generally worth checking out, even though I have a weird relationship with both of them. Sometimes I adore their films, full stop, but there are other times where I watch a movie and I can’t put my finger on why it doesn’t click with me. I can’t quantify it. An example of that is Fargo. I should love it but it left me cold.

Asteroid City is an exploration of curiosity in an age of uncertainty. Humourous, imaginative, and human- the film also features stellar performances by Scarlett Johansson, Jason Schwartzman, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, and more. The screenplay is looser than Anderson’s normal output, but this results in a movie that is playful AND thoughtful. Some of this play lessens the emotional impact of the film while bolstering thematic elements. This trade is not worth it for me personally, but I still quite enjoyed Asteroid City.

Since the Brothers’ split, I had wondered what their individual output would be. I really liked Macbeth which simultaneously feels very Coen and still very Shakespeare. Drive Away Dolls seems different from Macbeth necessarily, but also in exciting ways. Hope you like it!

Months late here but I just thought of this and I can’t help but post it
What a rotten thing to post. - YouTube

Don’t intend to post about every movie I see, but I rented the Renfield movie today and got a real kick out of it. Apparently its brand of humor didn’t click with a lot of people, but I found it a complete riot. (Perhaps helpful that I’m a fan of the Dracula novel, and am on Team Nicolas Cage for the time being following his excellent performance in the Pig movie.) A very over-the-top blood-and-gore-fest, with a plot that makes me think of something out of GTA, but also Dracula’s there just hamming it up lol. The movie felt self-aware enough for me to suspend my disbelief, but still there was enough of an arc for the main characters to make me care what happens to them. Can see it being rather “your mileage may vary” on all of that though.

I think the last great movie I saw was A Man For All Seasons (1966). It’s about Thomas More’s principled stand against Henry VIII. A great story about religious convictions. I would recommend it to all, especially Catholics.
