Hyper Potions (who did that trailer track for Sonic Mania) kinda opened the flood gates for me to more chiptune/“kawaii” is the only way I can think of describing it. But here are some feel good times if you need them.

Spotify knows me too well. In my weekly mix:

Her stuff can be hit or miss with me, but I’ve really been enjoying Lana Del Rey’s latest album from like a month ago. There’s some really moving and beautiful moments in it. I definitely lean towards indie and pop in my tastes, but I like to keep up with the latest happenings in the music world

Recently heard someone reference the Cranberries and have been listening to them a bit. This was one of their tunes I really liked. The early/mid 90s always feels so magical, nostalgia is a powerful drug.

Some of my favourite concerts I attended were for The Cranberries in the 90s. One of my favourite bands and I miss Dolores.

Never saw them live. For me their catalog has a lot of meh, but when they’re good, they’re great. The way she recorded and layered vocals was really cool.

Grim subject matter, but another banger: The Icicle Melts - YouTube

I love their first three albums and some of the fourth but didn’t really get into anything they put out in the 2000s. There are a few 90s bands that I feel didn’t evolve into the 2000s along with my evolving tastes so sadly I didn’t keep up with them.

Spotify’s weekly recommendation for me, spot on again:

For dancing in the allies and the streets
For the thrill and the fear of getting caught kissing
For my sister, my brother, and unity
For all the times we tried to change their minds and stale beliefs

For the loss of pride, for poverty
For the dream of just a normal life for you and me
For all the children who are starving for a loaf of bread
For the greed of politics and all the lies they spread

For all the mass-polluted air we breathe
For all the litter in the streets and all the dying trees
For all the animals who suffer from elimination
For all the cats and dogs who love us without no conditions

For all the tears that seem to never end
For all the images that keep on turning in our heads
For a simple smile to last a little while
For the future generations fighting for their time

For empty promises of heaven in the after-life
For all the imprisonment of beautiful minds
For all the babies who are born and for the ones who died
For all the times you told the truth, and all the times you lied

For all the speeches that we heard about a million times
For all the shacks and shelters that were sold to make a dime
For just a glimpse of a peaceful life
For the rising of the sun after an endless night

For all the pills we pop just to get some sleep
For all mankind, and our country
For all the boys and girls who never knew equality
For woman, for life, liberty
For liberty
For liberty
For liberty

Through this:

I was reminded of this:

Spotify playlist

currently listening through all the songs they used, so far I like most of them, so I am really into 4 accord songs … … and Pachelbel:

I also wonder what will happen with all the songs AI is going to create when asked to write a song “in the style of artist X”. Is it immediately their property?

I really hope Sheeran wins.

I’m not really a Sheeran fan, but if someone can copyright a 4-chord progression, it would completely destroy the songwriting industry. I hope he wins as well.

AI music an is interesting topic. It has been in the news lately because of an “AI” Drake song that was going around. But as far as I know, it wasn’t generated with a prompt like with AI-generated images–someone would have had to compose and produce the song, and then cloned Drake’s voice onto it using AI. Of course, using someone’s voice without their consent is a little gross just on the surface, but the technology has interesting potential. Grimes recently created a site to allow people to clone her voice with her consent, and even allows a 50/50 split for commercial use. I played around with it for a little bit and I do think it has some potential as a tool in that scenario if the artist wants to embrace it. The way it works is you upload a sound file with your voice to the site and it transforms your voice into Grimes’ voice on a new file. I was messing around with it and made this version of All Star as an experiment…

I haven’t seen any public generative AI model that can spit out a song in an artist’s voice or style with a prompt (I think Google might have one, but hasn’t released it). Much like with images, though, it would need to be trained with an artist’s music in order to be able to replicate that voice or style, so I really hope the lawsuits currently going on in the visual art world set good precedents that protect artist’s rights.

A Manhattan jury has found that Ed Sheeran did not plagiarise Marvin Gaye’s 1973 song “Let’s Get It On” for his 2014 single “Thinking Out Loud” :hugs:

The link includes a statement from Ed Sheeran, worth reading.

Since the ESC Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is starting today and we will lose badly again I guess:

Germany´s biggest Talk-Show Host Jan Böhmermann satirizing the bad ESC places of Germany by making a fake Entry Music Video:

It’s a better song than most of our song entries in the past. Does anyone here watch the ESC? Do you have a favorite song?

No, but this one drag queen channel I watch on YouTube regularly uses the “zero points” clip as a cutaway gag

For once a song with German lyrics that I listen to at the moment:

Translation:
I’m not a fancy hipster
Got more of a nerd profile
I’m full of fantasies
Talk soft, think hard
I don’t surf the retro wave
I surf the web
Looking for reading glasses frames
I read books on my bed
And every now and then I think
I don’t fit in anywhere
And no one seems like me
No one seems close to me
Why do I feel different and what does that mean?
Because we’re all different and that makes us all the same.
It’s not about who
It’s that you love
It’s not about how much, but that you give
It’s not about winning, it’s about fighting.
It’s not about the song, it’s about you dancing
And then and then and then I meet you
You see me and you listen to me and you’re there for me
You take away all my shadows
You make my vision clear
Make me real, make me real and make me visible
I like the way you and I
Spin the earth for us
We are alone together
That makes you beautiful to me
And that we are not perfect
Makes it all the more perfect
It’s funny that I
I didn’t realise until now
It’s not who you love
It’s that you love
It’s not how much, it’s that you give
It’s not about winning, it’s about fighting.
It’s not about the song, it’s about you dancing
Maybe it’s not about the what
It’s about the how
Maybe it’s not about physics
It’s more about imagination
It’s not about the happy ending
It’s just about this day
It’s not about how loud, it’s about what you say
It’s not about possessions
It’s about what makes you happy
It’s not about the joke
It’s about you laughing
It’s not about who
It’s about loving
It’s not about how much, it’s about giving.
It’s not about winning, it’s about fighting
It’s not about the song, it’s about you dancing
It’s not about the song, it’s about you dancing
