Given the new data is based on IGDB and Sun and Moon each have their own entry, the revised database entries here will likely eventually match that once the transition is complete.
All the data is in the database from IGDB, and it’s getting updated every day. I’ve fleshed out the IGDB pages quite a bit, although they still need a couple of things added to them. You can use those entries on your shelves without worry. The only way they show up in search is if you type in the name exactly. So Pokemon you have to have the accent over the e. I’ve done some merging and worked out some kinks with my merge code. The next step is to finish building out my “fast merge” interface. I’ve got a pretty good idea for what I want the interface to look like and how it’ll work for my super curator team.
I’ve had to fight off LLM bots the last couple of weeks, so that has sucked any time away from coding.
From what I gather from this thread, the switch to IGDB is a fait accompli at this point. But I wanted to at least bring to your attention that the new owners of Giant Bomb recently said that they’re committed to getting their wiki back in shape: https://www.giantbomb.com/articles/update-on-the-giant-bomb-website/1100-6524/.
That said, what I’ve seen of the work you’ve already done on the transition to IGDB looks good. You’re doing a great job as usual. Thanks for all you do for us!
I heard on the last bombcast that they were going to be open sourcing their wiki and rewriting the whole thing from scratch. I wish I had known about their whole buying the site away and doing this. I know Bakalar has used Grouvee at some point and time, and I bet we could have done something to help out. The IGBD thing is still the right decision for this site at this point and time, but it would have been cool to have been a part of keeping the legacy of their wiki alive.
Speaking of editing data - I recently noticed that the feature to record playthrough data was readded to the game pages, and I couldn’t be happier because recording play time data is one the main things I’m using on groovee. With this I now have all the features that I used back, and with game data coming from IGDB there is now a significantly higher game coverage compared to giant bomb.
This is absolutely amazing and I really appreciate it!
I haven’t merged all of the current Giant Bomb entries on Grouvee into their corresponding IGDB entries. I have recently built an efficient merge interface I’ve been testing myself, but I haven’t shown it to anyone else yet. Those 2 games are the IGDB entries that only a couple of people have found, so that’s why they only have a 1 star rating from 1 person. Destroy All Humans! (2005) | Grouvee and Midnight Club II (2003) | Grouvee are the GB versions that I will merge in here in a little bit.
Is there a way to make it so that only the main games and expansions appear in the search results? Then if someone wants to rate or review a port, bundle, update, dlc, etc., they can just navigate to it from the main game page?
Here are some examples of games that should feel simple to search and rate but have a bunch of convoluted entries for them that are overwhelming:
Final Fantasy XIV (I know some of these are duplicates and will be merged but it’s weird to have an entry for update 7.1, 7.2, etc.)
I like the idea, and have thought something similar. I’m a little worried there are situations where people are going to be looking for a game, and the version most people know or have is really the expanded version of something else. Like Metroid for instance. I wonder if I can come up with a checkbox to allow people to only show Main Games, Remasters, Remakes and Expansions in the search bar. I definitely need to get the label for what category the game is in the search bar and the search results. That will help a lot. Or maybe I can just sort the Main Games and such to the top of the list, and push everything else further down.
The expanded versions shouldn’t be too bad being shown either. We could experiment and see what ends up best. It’s mostly the ports, updates, and individual entries being shown just because it’s on another platform that is cluttering the results. Having search filters seems like a good way to search for everything if someone wants to see all the pages.
EDIT: I have an additional suggestion. Is it possible to do a carousel or sideways scroll arrow for “Related Content” on game pages? For example, this entry has a lot of pages under updates and you have to scroll down quite a ways to view all of them. I think it looks more organized when it stays in one solitary horizontal shelf that you could “swipe” to see more.
Give it a look now and see what you think. I made it so that only 6 related games shows in a tab, and there’s a show remaining link that will show them all. I can do the carousel thing if you think that would be better.
