Maybe we can do subscription campaigns. It could be a prize for community game nights (obviously gifted from one of us or that only makes your issue worse). I’m not sure how many more you need to cover the costs of these server upgrades. There is also the possibility to up the costs of the subs themselves. Or maybe add more features to having a sub, as the main draw right now is to remove ads but many people just use ad-blockers.
I’ve thought about this. I probably should make it $20-$30 a year. I’ll just blame tariffs. I’ve also let Google just run whatever ads it feels like recently, and it has made a difference. It went from pennies to actually making a little bit of money. I don’t really like it, but if people don’t want them, they can buy Gold or just use an ad blocker.
Maybe when I get a little bit of free time in my finished basement I’ll do some kind of weird Twitch stream subathon thing. I’ll just sit and play adventure games and Clair Obscur and ask people to give me money
If it’s possible to implement notification features or mute functions for certain games, that would be a cool subscription feature.
All I can say is: Give me a way to shove an additional 20€ your way per year and I do it in an instant. I would have done it already, but I just don’t know how.
I would still like to be able to give someone a one-year gold subscription as a gift. This would encourage people to contribute to the site, and it would be a way for me to thank people for their great reviews, questions and discussions. It would also advertise the Gold Programme to these people, who might then choose to stay and continue paying.
Increasing the price is OK, but it also raises the entry threshold, so I would rather keep that low and find other ways to spread the financial burden, as this is safer in the long term the more people get involved and pay.
I could also see a banner displaying the funding goal at the top of the page as a solution, so that people can see whether or not the site needs funding for that year. It would be a reminder that the site needs to be funded somehow.
You could twitch and code too, ngl peeps that dont work with code all day long enjoy watching that. I doubt it would be a donation pot of gold though
Heh “Data merge” “Super easy” Famous last words good sir.
I have been having issues with some games due to the database switch, it shows a very simple page instead of the normal one. I hope the move is done soon considering I heard GiantBomb has been decaying for a while.
When you are done firefighting the change, i’d love to see that New Releases on the right of the site, expanded into its own page.
“see more” or something suitably web designed to take you to see them. I know there are other places I can see this info but I like grouvee
I have not meant to go dark on this for the last week or two here, but it’s been very busy at my house with some crazy projects going on.
I almost have the IGDB pages finished up where you can do reviews and status updates like you can now. I just have to add the platform data edit box and the date tracking stuff back in. From there, we’ll get into the crazy nonsense of merging data.
Thank you everyone for your patience!
OK, so I did a couple of things today. I added tabs for “related content” like DLC and expansions, etc. Take a look at Assassin's Creed Odyssey | Grouvee for a good example of why it was needed. Let me know if it’s not intuitive enough.
You can also now write reviews for IGDB games! It’s real simple, and it doesn’t show everyone else’s reviews on the page, but it’ll create something that goes to the front page and people will be able to read it there. I’m working on it, but I wanted to get this out the door so people could at least use the pages a little bit better.
Thanks again for sticking with me!
I also need my fellow FFX aficionado @Roach to look at the rabbit hole of FFX entries that came out of IGDB. Final Fantasy X | Grouvee You have to click through to the Expanded Versions to get to the International Version to get to the Remaster to get to the X/X-2 bundle. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since they released a version of that game.
That is an interesting way for IGDB to do that…
I already ran into a hiccup with their information because they don’t count games in the NSO virtual console libraries as releases. For example, you can’t say you played Ocarina of Time on Switch 1 or Switch 2. Their reason is because it’s part of a subscription library and not a purchasable game on eShop, which is frustrating.
It’s annoying, but it’s technically all correct. It’s just not how most people would probably think about it on a collection website.
Hmm, that’s interesting, although I can see the logic, maybe? They’re emulating an old console on a new console, so it’s not really a release for that new console. Once again, it’s kind of weird for a collection website if you were going to add that game to your Played shelf, and you only ever played it on the Switch, you’d wonder why you couldn’t add Switch as a platform. I’m sure IGDB and even Nintendo would say it’s really an N64 game, not a Switch game. Once again, probably a technically correct thing. I wonder if I should make the platform data not necessarily be tied to what’s showing on the game data. Like just let people put in whatever platform they want in their metadata.

That could be an interesting way to handle it, especially if people are playing on specific emulators and what not. It’s a mild annoyance for me. I did try to suggest an edit to add those platforms but they rejected it and gave that NSO isn’t an actual platform. I tried.
I like how the page is put together. It feels like the important info is recorded there, while also being quite tidily packaged so it isn’t overwhelming!
The new layout on desktop looks like a good move to represent all the IGDB data and make it easier to get to status updates without scrolling past all the reviews. I noticed my own review now displays fully expanded, where on the old layout you had to select “more” to expand it. Also, some of the game details previously on the left column of the page were shifted into the main content on the right. For both of these reasons the content I’m usually looking for, reviews and status updates, is a bit further down the page while the left column feels very empty - so that’s just the minor downside of the layout to me, not that it’s a huge deal. Lastly, on mobile, the “user stats” and link to IGDB now display above the actual title/description/rating, which also pushes down the info I would say is more interesting usually. Just a few observations and suggestions, definitely no pressure since I know how much there is still to do. Thanks for the continued work on this.
BTW I can help with merging pages or data or whatever ends up being needed.
@peter --question!
The game “Jester/King” is represented in IGDB, but it doesn’t seem to have pulled through to Grouvee. When you have a spare moment, could you take a look please? I wonder if the punctuation has caused some kind of hiccup in import.
(watch it turn out to be imported and just buried in the database, and I’ll have to say “oh, uh…hey, look over there, isn’t that the cast of MarioKart?!” and run away.)
It probably wasn’t about punctuation but about spaces. The title of the game (both in igdb and grouvee) is ‘Jester / King’. Mind the spaces around the slash.
Yeah, what mmuffins said is right about the spacing.
I have the search for IGDB games setup kind of weird right now, and I should probably change it. Basically an IGDB game that hasn’t been merged or approved only shows up if you type in the name exactly. This is probably causing too much confusion.
Oh, uh…hey, look over there, isn’t that the whole cast of MarioKart?!
Thanks to both of you for solving the mystery–I couldn’t figure out why just ‘jester’ wasn’t returning it in the database, so I figured the slash in the title made something somewhere go haywire. Glad to know it was a bit simpler than that!
