watching your kids play their first game where they can control the camera and they just pick deranged angles. we’re playing pokopia with the camera spinning directly over the player character.
I hope to have kids one day and look forward to seeing them play halo 2 for the first time. Also Republic Cammando.
My kids’ school has gone all in on generative AI. I feel ready to go to war with them. Has anyone had to push for broad changes to their kids’ school?
I haven’t, for the moment my niece’s school is still fairly lukewarm on AI. But I wish you luck in your fight!
Best study I’ve seen so far to boost your case is this one, which tracked 27,000 students and found that using AI for homework reduced their test scores by 20% in just 6 months.
Given the US emphasis on test scores, that seems like a good angle of approach.
What do you mean by they’ve gone all in on generative ai? Like all their lessons are coming from ChatGPT now?
Are they doing stuff like this?
Sadly they haven’t gone that far in the great state of Vitoiis
Teaching kids how to be “proficient with it” is on the curriculum and there are some AI made assignments. “All In” might be an overstatement as it isn’t a mandate. My daughter’s social studies teacher has a “No AI” rule which I appreciate and says they aren’t forcing every teacher to use it. One example is a teacher asked one of my kids’ classes to make rules for the class. Then, rather than discussing those rules and implementing where appropriate, the teacher ran the suggestions without discussing it with the kids through a genAI to decide the class rules.
I straight up told my kids that they are catholic for the purposes of using the religious exemption from engaging with it.
My son’s school has really leaned into in-class work since the AI boom. they’ve been impressively quick to stop kids from using AI to fake their work. It’s funny, though even with that, the school uses generative AI all over its flyers and event posts.
I did have a serious chat with him about getting too attached to AI. We had imaginary friends growing up but now it’s GPT or Grok. It feels like about a third of my parenting lately is just helping him spot misinformation.
