I’m close to throwing the towel in, too. Three times I’ve had saves reverted to earlier levels. At first I thought I had just forgotten to save but I started being very careful about saving regularly and it just happened again.
That really sucks and sounds super frustrating. I wonder why that’s happening. :((
Alright, I beat Lost Kingdoms 2.
I did not love the ‘false’ difficulty of having no blue fairies during the final boss stage. But I managed to beat it.
What should our theme be for August?
I’m open to suggestions. We usually start mid-month so we can take suggestions now and run a vote for a week.
I’d like to try to veer a bit harder into retro gaming, a bit of a return of the a retro Game Club. Perhaps easy mode retro, i.e., anything released a minimum of ten years ago.
How about… games from any handheld system? Game Boy all the way to 3DS.
Or alternatively, retro platformers? I’ve been meaning to finish Donkey Kong Jungle Beat for ages.
I like the handheld idea.
This will also make it cheaper on our wallets. :))
I’m cool with the handheld idea though I imagine DS games will be harder to emulate. I’m not sure about PSP or Vita emulation either. I think there’s a good PSP emulator though.
DS is all good in terms of hardware performance these days, I think! As is PSP (I’m not sure about Vita, though!). The one setback for DS emulation is the touch screen, but it’s very game-dependent if it’s an issue to use the mouse as a stand-in for the touch controls. I’ll probably steer away from nominating a DS game for this reason, but I’m certainly not opposed to voting for a DS game if its primarily button-based or the touch controls are inobtrusive.
This one has been so hard to think of a game to nominate just because the sample size and quality is so tremendous. Portable gaming was my bread and butter growing up… there’s so many bangers, how am I meant to choose?!
I’m leaning towards a GBA game though, maybe. Best and most coolest portable console imo!!!
Since it seems that we are all into the idea of handheld games, I’m happy to open up nominations. If you have a game you’d like to nominate, let’s hear it.
I’ll nominate Hotel Dusk: Room 215, which is a murder mystery point n click for the DS.
I had to think really hard for something I’d like to see go up against Hotel Dusk (one of my favs!!), and I have decided on a couple of GBA games: one I haven’t played at all but really want to and the other I played a lot and always wanted to return to it. Both are action-RPGs I believe! They are:
- CIMA: The Enemy (also known as Frontier Stories in Japan)! It is… I think it’s an action-RPG with puzzle elements? And like a dozen party members? And a train? I don’t know. From the storied devs behind the Lufia and Rune Factory series!
- Shining Soul 2! A (barely connected) spin-off the Shining Force series. Action-RPG dungeon crawler Diablo-em-up… on the go! And made by Grasshopper Manufacturer, for some reason!
Oh my god Shining Soul 2 lol, I was briefly super into that one when I was a kid! Portable Diablo felt like a revelation.
CIMA looks very unique, as well.
I’m going to nominate WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!. It’s the first Wario Ware game and I’ve played a little bit of it before and found it very fun. :))
I used to own a physical copy of Hotel Dusk but once I beat it, I gave it away. Kind of regret it but I didn’t like it as much as Trace Memory so it doesn’t bother me much.
I was thinking about nominating Warioware! I will play a Warioware game any time, unprompted.
Trace Memory/Another Code is great! My favourite Cing game is Last Window: The Secret of Cape West which is basically Hotel Dusk 2. Even though it got a full localisation and release in Europe it never saw the light of the day in the US and that really stinks. I really enjoyed Cing’s games. I need to play that Switch remake of Another Code!
Doing a quick tally. So far we have the following nominations,
- Hotel Dusk: Room 215
- CIMA: The Enemy
- Shining Soul 2
- WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
Do we have any more nominations? I’m still thinking on mine.
I’m nominating Lady Sia because it’s a relatively obscure title I’ve never played and lands on some people’s list of favourite lesser know games, and R-Type DX because of Kimimi’s recent essay about the game.
Oh can I throw in Hamtaro: Ham-Ham Heartbreak as well? It looks super cute, and the weird dictionary system where you learn dozens of special hamster words sounds interesting.
Once again, this isn’t fair. I want to play ALL of these games.
