Grouvee Food: Brews

I googled the word (assuming it’s a word and not some random letters typed on a keyboard while drunk) and found many words that had no meaning to me (starting from someone enjoying anise). So, I’ll ask, in words that a simpleton like me can get, what’s malort?

It is a wormwood liqueur that has a bitter floral grapefruit flavor. It’s got a bite and is fairly complex, so it has its share of haters. I also did not enjoy it the first time I had it. I now think it makes a great mixer to a tonic drink as a lot of that complexity gets more space to shine. I wonder how far they ship it? I figured it wouldn’t be that popular among the Grouvee readers, but I expected it to register.

I like grapefruit, so it might hit with me. I might have to see if i can find some. We have a local store that may carry it, theyve got a pretty vast selection.

I absolutely love chai. My girlfriend used to work with an Indian doctor who would make Masala chai every day at like 10 am on schedule, said it was like the best perk of that job

Seems like a good fall drink too. I might goof around and see if I try a cream liqueur instead of milk if I can get a boozy cocktail as a result.

Our truck driver at the store also works at a movie theater in the evenings. He brought in several of these things. They had $25 price tags on them. They look like the stickers were printed on a cannon printer from 2002 and slapped on here. What should I drink out of this?

I’m getting a bit tired of my mainstay yerba mate (Cruz de Malta), so last week I bought six unfamiliar brands from a new supplier to see if any of them can dethrone the champ! This week I’m testing one new brand each day, and on the off chance there’s any other mate fans here I thought I might as well post little micro reviews.

Today’s brew: Itapúa

This is an unsmoked mate with finely cut leaves and few stems, making for a tea that’s subtle in flavor but quite strongly caffeinated. It’s super smooth, the grassy/buttery flavor typical of unsmoked mate is present without becoming overwhelming, and it has close to zero bitterness outside of a nice aftertaste. A slightly fruity background sets it apart from other unsmoked mates I’ve tried.

It’s competitively priced and is organic, too, which are both huge points in its favor. Overall, an encouraging start for yerba mate week!

i figured that. the one i had was cold so in that case it at least also went through a straining and chilling process. just trying to demystify a lot of this stuff for myself. i was looking in to making matcha lattes at home earlier today.

Yeah, it’s the same as making iced tea or coffee, essentially.

Matcha is easy, just whisk the powder into a base of liquid and then incorporate your steamed milk. The key is to whisk it enough to emulsify the mixture so that it doesn’t settle immediately.

Fellow mate consumer! Where are you from? Here, close to Argentina, there are plenty of brands not that expensive to have. I currently have a Rosamonte classic open on my desk.

my issue with matcha is i often feel like i get clumps of powder in the final drink. maybe ill get one of those fun wooden whisks.

You put a ton of mate leaves in a cup (which can be made from anything, ceramic, steel, plastic, although I like the natural ones, like wooden or pumpkin), and then you pour water on it, compact it a bit, and drink it with a straw that’s also a colander (so you don’t eat all the leaves). You rinse and repeat, and for me, a half-full cup of leaves last me a day (or a litre-full thermos).

Yerba Mate is a plant from South America that is used to brew a drink that has natural caffeine. It’s a little like tea, but a different plant.
