Games That Touched You

Tetris Effect is such a good shout, honestly. And now I want to get back to playing Destiny Connect!

Now THIS is my kinda thread! I’ll give a few that have sprung to my mind, I’m sure more will pop up later.

Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon is the most a game has rocked me to my core and my favourite post-apocalypse fiction. The first time I played it I was crying start to finish. The main scenario was great, but I especially love the short stories you can find throughout the game, collecting ruined, once-loved objects and bearing witness to their owner’s final memories. One that always stuck in my mind was a game cartridge you can find, which in itself is a story about becoming attached to a game character you give a silly name. This is also the least heartbreaking of all the short stories by far. If the game sounds interesting to you it’s worth seeing for yourself! (Incidentally I was really touched by the short stories in Lost Odyssey as well, by far my favourite part of another great game).

I feel like this is an obvious one but Mother 3. I just think it’s such a beautiful story. As cartoony and goofy and silly as Mother frequently is, the measure with which the game handles the death of a parent is the most viscerally raw and emotionally honest depiction I’ve seen in any media. AND it’s funny, too!

Many good Final Fantasy calls throughout this thread that I absolutely stand by, but I would like to add one entry I think will be overlooked and that is Final Fantasy XV. A lot has been said about the game but the one thing I can say it nails is the road-trip feeling and the level of camraderie you have with your party throughout. By the end, they all feel less like characters and more like friends. As far as I’m concerned that’s a great feat of storytelling—I just love those boys so much and I’ll never ever forget them.

I’ll let you all know if I come up with more. Incidentally, making a big old list of games to try based on everything else that has been covered in this thread I haven’t tried. Thank you all for the inspiration!
