Game Trailers

It’s really, really good, yet I didn’t love it. So many superb pieces, but a whole that didn’t click for me.

Hope it’s as good as it looks.

I don’t know anything about Hellraiser but this looks pretty good. Is it like a sex curse thing like It Follows?

Sex curse is about as mildly as you can put it. Think more in terms people so sated on earthly pleasure that they open the door to cosmic pleasure/pain. In some sense transcendence. In another the ultimate pleasure of total bodily obliteration. And at that point pleasure is pain.

They are worth it if you enjoy 80s horror. I’d only bother with the first two, though.

I’ll add them to my list. How many movies are there? Are they based off comics or anything?

I think there are six in total, plus one reboot film. Most of the later ones were direct to video.

They aren’t based on any pre-existing property, Clive Baker came up with them his crazy self.

Definitely watch the first directed by Barker that he adapted from his book The Hellbound Heart. The second is a direct follow up that’s not too bad. The rest depend on how into it you are because some are quite “bad”. I’m sad the most recent one wasn’t that great because I like the director’s other films.

Didn’t know it was based on a book. Know if it’s any good?

If you enjoy his writing and you enjoyed the movie, yes. It’s part of the Books of Blood anthology he wrote in the 80s and reflects a lot of the general themes important to his work at that time. I recommend it. The movie is pretty close in several ways, so you might like it just for being a companion to it. And it’s interesting because Barker directly adapted his own work, so it wasn’t being adapted by someone at arms length.

I’ve never actually read any of his stuff, just seen a few of his films. Will certainly check it out!

Ok, well it can be quite gory. And a lot of his writing is allegory for things like anti-Thatcherism, the AIDS crisis, Queerness, etc.. The Hellhound Heart in particular engages with and critiques mainstream views on sexuality. The book is a bit more intense than the film in certain ways, some of which were because censors forced Barker to remove scenes that he filmed that they deemed excessive.
