Comics, anyone?

I recently re-read the George Perez Wonder Woman books, I decided to give them all away to charity.
Why? Because there was just too much in there that left a bad taste in my mouth.

Before they go to Paradise Island, it’s revealed that Heracles and his men captured, tortured and raped the Amazons. They escape, of course, and, rather understandably, declare men to be evil, thus their women-only society. However, not too long after, Heracles returns and Hippolyta just…forgives him. I mean, WHAT?

Sure, he had been imprisoned by the gods for what he did and stripped of his godhood (which he eventually gets back) but still.

There are also aspects of American ignorance (Diana mentions she has to learn to read “American,”) and racist caricature that really put a bad taste in my mouth.

I know the Perez run is held up by many as the pinnacle of Wonder Woman, and the man’s art is amazing, but these things really ruined it for me.

Personally, if someone asks me for the best Wonder Woman run, I’ll point them towards Gail Simone’s issues.

@Peter looks like the Mad Cave Phantom series is available through their website now, out July 30th.

It’s not listed on my LCS’s site anywhere and I’ve been constantly checking solicitations so it might be a website exclusive thing. If so I won’t be able to get it given the cost of shipping from the US.

Edit: According to this post on their BlueSky account it’ll be available in comic stores in September.

Awesome! My son will be excited. I actually was just asking one of my customers yesterday that owns Downtown Comics here in Indianapolis about this. He didn’t know and said he was going to look into it for me. I’ll have to get some set aside in a pull box.

Issue 2000 of Aussie publisher Frew Publications’ The Phantom comes out this week. They have been been publishing the series uninterrupted since 1948!

Currently reading the first volume of Babs by Garth Ennis and Jacen Burrows. It’s a very subversive sword and sorcery book that pokes fun at everything from the genre (while still embracing it) to a certain organe coloured wanker and his followers (that it doesn’t embrace at all).

I’ve laughed out loud multiple times reading it. It’s really sharp and witty and, in typical Ennis fashion, pulls no punches. If you’d enjoy S&W with some biting social commentary, I’d highly recommend it.

Saw the above on Reddit and while I support people standing up for what they believe in, I don’t trust Disney to take the right message from such actions.

It’s not the fault of the people creating the comics that Disney is shite. Most probably started working for Marvel before the buyout.

If people cancel their comics, be it Unlimited or physical copies, Disney will just see they aren’t making money from comics and ditch that s side of the business.

Disney has basically let the comics stuff work as it has always done, to a degree, since taking over. If that starts losing money though they will 100% ditch it.

I’d be very surprised if they haven’t been looking for an excuse to do so from Day 1, and such moves as the post above suggests could give them just that.

My LCS didn’t get every variant cover, but I grabbed all the ones they did. Pre-ordered variants for the future issues as well. Can’t decide it this is brilliant or dumb idea :joy:
