What exactly is happening? Is it just the display resolution not matching the aspect ratio of the TV. I can say that when I am in console mode the max output is tied to the Steam Deck’s resolution and aspect ratio. When I’m in desktop mode I have access to additional resolutions and ratios. So, if I really need a game to output something other than the handheld defaults (sometimes I don’t care) I play in desktop mode. But it sounds like you are having additional issues, yes?
I’m just not getting any display at all. I haven’t messed with it in a week or so, but there was just no output.
@Peter, Oh, no output at all. Have you tried it on any other screens (monitor, another TV)? Have you tried it with multiple cables to see if the problem is the cable? Likely you either haven’t or you have and it didn’t work given you don’t yet have a solution.
I’ve definitely tried multiple cables. I didn’t try and plug it into my monitor yet because I’m lazy. I did just have to factory reset my TV yesterday because of some weird striping that was going on. I didn’t get a chance to retest whether that fixed my issue yet.
My memory card finally arrived [got delayed twice], so I finally have Street Fighter V ! And it works !
Before that, I got/played Mighty Switch Force! Hyper Drive Edition on the Steam Deck, an old favourite
I can’t remember if you’ve said, but which version of the Deck did you get?
I’m not sure how to tell…the cheapest one, I think
So I’ve run into a problem where the Steam Deck no longer identifies my MicroSD card in game mode, but does in desktop mode. I know it can still read from it in game mode because emulators I’ve added to Steam can still play roms stored there. But the Steam Deck no longer shows the MicroSD card as an install location. Has anyone run into this issue?
Edit: found the solution
Edit: discovered that it also works just to navigate to the storage page in settings and then remove and re-insert the card. For some reason the Deck doesn’t always register it when you insert it when viewing another menu page. Lastly, it seems repeatedly switching between game, desktop and back to game mode can cause the MicroSD card to fail to mount in Game mode. I don’t know if this was caused by a recent OS revision, but it does seem new behaviour to me.
Can I pick your brain about getting Saturn games to work? I have the bios files, but I’m not sure where to put them so that RetroArch accesses them. I haven’t had this problem before because other games emulated through RetroArch don’t require a bios, or console emulation that does require bios files run through separate emulators (like PS2).
Edit: never mind, I had them in the right place, I just made the mistake of putting them in a subfolder titled Saturn. moving them to the bios folder without a continuing subfolder solved the issue.
Okay, great! I’m glad you figured it out because it’s been a long time since I set this up! ![]()
Well it reads the bios, but not the games. The games are in the Saturn rom folder and I don’t have trouble with any other console emulated through RetroArch but Saturn is being a pain.
Do you know which core you are using for Saturn games? I read Beetle Saturn works best but for some reason I can’t get games to launch in it, and Yabuse seems to fail to load the game, sending me to the CD control screen instead.
Yes, on Steam Deck I’ve had good luck with the Kronos core.
I set it up before EmuDeck was a thing so a lot may have changed since then, but it seems to work well with Sonic Jam and Panzer Dragoon Saga.
Ok, I’ll take a peek at the Kronos core. Thanks.
So the latest Steam Deck update seems to have bricked my Steam Deck. It now just boots and shuts down and there doesn’t seem to be a way to get it to start up. Might have to pull out the boot disk I made to restore the system.
Oh no!! ![]()
Hope your reset goes smoothly
I started with just reinstalling Steam OS to try to avoid losing everything I’ve done on the deck. I’ll try updating to the latest stable version to see if that causes an issue again. Fingers crossed there was just a hiccup in the previous instal that causes a runtime error and the Deck to crash. If it does it again I’ll try rolling back a version to see if that resolves it.
Fingers crossed, one positive sign is it restarted from the update correctly. Last time it just shut down instead of restarting after installation. If this does work I’m indebted to your suggestion to create this system restore boot stick.
Hasn’t crashed yet, touch wood.

I really need to get on making the recovery boot disk.
